Thinking ahead is something we folks here at The Good Samaritan Center really try to do when it comes to the best way to serve our community.
And while some call it Christmas in July, A Very Merry Un-birthday for Jesus, or half way to the Joyful Season, we call it "only 66 days away! EEEEK!!!"
This means we need to get started gathering gifts for client families for the holidays. While toys, clothing, and home goods are always things our families can use, we found that using gift cards, especially ones from local businesses, is the best way to make everyone the MOST happy. Our local businesses receive a bonus in sales which supports our local economy, and client families are able to have experiences they might not never be able to afford, or are able to buy the things they need relevant to their situations, as opposed to receiving more toys when what they really need is haircuts.
If you are interested in donating to our holiday efforts, please give us a call at (816) 630-2718 or send us a PM here on FB, or shoot an email to [email protected]
Here's is a list of super awesome gift cards or gift certificates for ideas on what to get or where:
Dinner for 4 at local restaurants
Haircuts, Spa, and other self-care gift certificates
Family activities like The Community Center, Bowling, or Museums
Aldi, Walmart, Price Chopper, and Hy-Vee grocery stores
Movie, Concert, Shows, or Sports tickets
Gas stations, like Casey's or Quik Trip
Drug stores like Walgreens, CVS, and Jack Monroe Rx
Home improvement stores like Lowes and Home Depot
Garden Centers, Landscaping businesses, or Greenhouses
Here are some tips for more ideas:
We are looking for gifts that are useful in as many areas in Ray County, and rural Clay County as possible, as those are the residents we serve.
If your primary focus is children, big box stores are often best due to the wide and often varying needs of younger clients.
If your primary focus is seniors, consider cards to places like drug stores, and home improvement stores, as seniors are the most likely to need more non food, yet perishable items like hygiene things, and more likely to need home repair, like adding ramps and things to their homes.
There is always the possibility of setting up a bill payment gift situation for clients, but those things need to be discussed directly with caseworkers or the director. We are so very much looking forward to discussing this with donors.
Thank you to all of Our Donors, Staff, and Volunteers that make these holiday dreams a reality!!!

Our next truck comes in on Thursday, October 14th, around 8ish. This truck is an opportunity to not just unload and sort the groceries, but we also get to make up boxes of food for local Seniors and disabled folks AND deliver them.

This is also a great chance for everyone to come out and help who wants to, because you don't technically have to lift boxes to be of service. You can help us sort, and count, and make phone calls, coffee, and copies. You can be a cheerleader, a picture taker, a breakfast bringer, or a body builder.

This is our BIG Day, once a month, to go out INTO our community and assist some of the most in need. Won't you come join us in this fun and friendly opportunity to serve?

Help with Energy Bills | mydss.mo.gov

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) may be able to help you pay your home energy bills.

LIHEAP can help in two ways:
- Energy Assistance (EA) - Helps you with a one-time payment for your primary heating bills from November through March.
- Energy Crisis Intervention Program (ECIEP) - Helps pay your energy bill when your energy is shut off, or is threatened to be shut off, even if you have not received a shut off notice. The amount of help you receive is based on the amount of money needed to settle your crisis with the energy provider.
-----------------Winter ECIP is available November through MAY based on funding. The maximum amount you could receive is $800.
-----------------Summer ECIP is available June through October based on funding. The maximum amount you could receive is $600.

Some contracted agencies may also provide emergency services such as: blankets, emergency lodging, heating/cooling replacement or repair, window air conditioners, and/or wood stoves.

Who is eligible?

You may be eligible for help through LIHEAP if you:
- are responsible for paying the heating and cooling costs for your home.
- are a United States citizen (or have been legally admitted for permanent residence.)
- have $3,000 or less in your bank accounts, retirement accounts, or investments.
- meet specific income requirements based on your household size and type of fuel.

For more information about eligibility requirements, contact the Contracted Agency that provides services for your area, and a list of agencies by county is attached to the application provided to you at the Good Samaritan Center.

How do I apply?

- Call (855) FSD-INFO and ask them to mail one to you.
- Pick one up at The Good Samaritan Center.
- Get an application online (https://dss.mo.gov/fsd/energy-assistance)

When Will I get my benefit?

Once you submit your application and required documents, your application will be reviewed within approximately 30 business days (unless it is considered a crisis). A letter will be mailed to you that tells you if you qualify for LIHEAP and the amount you will get.
After you apply for energy assistance, please continue to pay your heating or cooling bill if you can do you do not get disconnected or run out of fuel such as propane, wood, or pre-paid electric. Your bill needs to be paid to your utility company (not the LIHEAP agency).

We all had a GREAT time at Jen Chappel's women's empowerment tea party. The homemade sandwiches were delish, the speakers were absolute powerhouses of women who were also lovely, approachable, and knowledgeable. We want to thank everyone who came, and we definately wanna thank Jen for the super sweet presents. I wish I had won that wreath in the raffle tho! Now, for some self care and uplifting reading in a tub full of bubbles.... Goodnight everyone. It's all love.
