As Ukraine prepares to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its renewed independence on August 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s Russia is making no secret of its open hostility toward and frustration with Ukraine. And at the same time, recent collusion between Berlin and Washington have added t...

Sensational archaeological find uncovers “Ukrainian Stonehenge” in eastern Ukraine

There are numerous kurgans scattered throughout eastern and southern Ukraine and archaeologists and historians are worried that, in many cases, urban sprawl will lead to the destruction of these ancient burial mounds. Thus, they are rushing to excavate as many of them as possible in order to save an...

We have baking tips from one of our ingenious members who is a fan of beet leaf bread! (For those unfamiliar with beet leaf bread, the main parts of the recipe are beet leaves wrapped around bread dough. Other names for this dish are beetnik bread and beef leaf holubtsi.)
If you are unable to find beet leaves or used up what you have, try swiss chard (photo below), which is in the same plant family as beets. You'll just have to call it by a new name: Swiss chard bread. In Ukraine's grape-growing regions, they also use grape leaves.
Another tip, once your casserole is full of leaf bread, cover the top row of bread with an extra layer of leaves. This will help prevent the top row from overbaking or getting too dark.
A recipe for beet leaf bread is in the post below this one.

A friend of ours in Poland, Joanna Strzelecka, who has family times to present-day Ukraine and in North Dakota and Canada, has sent an Easter message. It speaks of optimism, which we certainly need now and then. Happy Easter everyone!🐥

Easter is a time of encouragement and hope; the time of rebirth of faith in the strength of Christ and another person.
We wish Easter brings you joy and mutual kindness - that they become a source of strengthening the spirit.
May the Resurrection that brings rebirth fill you with peace and faith.
Let Him give you strength to overcome difficulties and allow you to look to the future with confidence.

Dzvynyachka, Ukraine, is the home village of some of the Wolkowiczes. It's no longer a familiar name in North Dakota, but some people in North Dakota and Oregon can trace their lineage to this family. Sisters Franceska and Helena Wolkowicz married into one of the Ziolkowski and one of the Rodakowski families in Ukraine, and those families moved to North Dakota, with the Ziolkowskis later moving to Oregon. In Dzvynyachka, shown is the Greek Catholic church, a road leading into the village, and a лебідь (phonetically pronounced lebidʹ) on a lake. (These photos were also taken by Ukrainian researcher Ihor Voronchak.)

We have more photos from Boryshkivtsi, Ukraine, in addition to our Feb. 26 posts which are below. One is of a road leading into the village. The photo with the solitary blue cross appears to be in memory of someone, possibly named Lucian, who immigrated to America. The light blue building is a library, while the tan building is a residence.

This is the former Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Boryshkivtsi, Ukraine, which has been converted into an Orthodox church. One of the North Dakota families that can trace their family lines to this village are the Rodakowskis. (This 2017 photo was taken by Ihor Voronchak and is posted here with his permission.)

Boryshkivtsi, Ukraine, is the home village of the Rodakowski families that settled in North Dakota in the early 20th century. At that time, the village was in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Below are some photos of the village that were taken in 2017 by Ihor Voronchak, a researcher in Ukraine. The building is a school. An interesting difference in the cemeteries is that is North Dakota, all of the crosses are painted white or silver, but in Ukraine they are mostly light blue or teal blue. Maybe the Ukrainian cemeteries in North Dakota are due for a change? 🇺🇦

Please spare a minute of your time to get word "Holodomor" included in major English dictionaries. This will help to spread the knowledge about Holodomor, facilitate the recognition of Holodomor as genocide and prevent such atrocities from happening again. https://www.change.org/p/merriam-webster-dictionary-help-us-get-the-word-holodomor-included-in-all-major-english-dictionaries?recruiter=1014080567&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=share_email_responsive&utm_term=psf_combo_share_abi&recruited_by_id=a9997fa0-fa8e-11e9-b30a-1d40dc7a478d&fbclid=IwAR30Pv_1tJmfMSdApwv8JUiAQms3fd14GPweKeCqOc-ihc3LHCon9aYrllo
Ukrainian School of San Francisco Inc. - неприбуткова організація US 501(c)(3), тому Ваша пожертва підлягає списанню з податків. П.С.
