Hello Friends!

As we all adjust to the challenging times that we live in, Des Moines Public Schools Foundation is hoping to take the next year to assess the changing needs of the students, faculty and staff of DMPS.

While we hope that schools resume in the fall, we recognize that things will necessarily be different. No one knows what that will look like yet or what needs may arise because of those changes.

Des Moines Public Schools Foundation hopes to be able to fill any gaps that arise, particularly in our focus fields of Music, Art, Theater and Science to support students in DMPS Elementary and Middle Schools.

We will strive to keep you posted on our efforts and the needs of the school district and our students.

Thank you for your continued support and stay safe!

Lincoln High School currently has approximately 50 seniors that cannot afford a cap and gown for graduation due to COVID 19 circumstances. For many of these students their parents have lost their income due to businesses closing.

We are reaching out to our friends of Lincoln and alumni to ask for donations to make sure all our seniors can walk across the stage wearing a cap and gown!

Please help us reach our goal of collecting $3,000 by clicking this link to donate: https://dmps.revtrak.net/lincoln-high-school-seniors/ THANK-YOU! #southsidepride

A crack team of curriculum experts deserves kudos for retooling district software to deliver a comprehensive range of course content to all grade levels during the virtual last term of the 2019-20 school year. They passed a crash course in how to keep schools open when they're closed with flying colors:

It is so important that school districts across Iowa realize that the DMPS district faces challenges and barriers that many smaller school districts do not have or do not have to the extent that DMPS district has.
With a student population of 33,000 students, 100 different
languages and a free and reduced lunch at 76%, the district is making courageous efforts in how to proceed, stay connected teachers to students, keep learning to a minimum of “staying on course”. Also realize that many of those essential workers keeping our stores, etc. open and stocked are our students parents. They will join the ranks of our medical fields as heroes when we cross over to the downward curve and healing of this most ghastly time. 🙏❤️

Can’t say enough good things about the DMPS Food & Nutrition workers and volunteers! Kids are staying healthy in this time of the unknown - thanks to all of you from the DMPS Foundation!!

The DMPS Food & Nutrition Department opened a chain of fast, free food sites at lunchtime Thursday with the help of lots of volunteers from around the district. The change in operations will last as long as the school closure continues.

Due to our current National, State, City and Community critical health concerns regarding COVID19, the Des Moines Public Schools District has cancelled all school days until at least April 13, 2020. This includes all school related events.

Since our time is so uncertain, we have made the decision to postpone OneRun 2020 until the Fall of 2020. We are working with our partners and sponsors to secure a date and will post as soon as we have everything confirmed.

In the meantime, please stay well!

Kids, keep up the great work you have been doing in school, doing your studying and learning at home with your family!
We will see you all in the Fall of 2020 for an amazing day of fun to support our schools at OneRun!

Thank you so much to our DMPS!! What a wonderful gift to our medical field and to the community. ♥️

Thank you so much to our DMPS!! What a wonderful gift to our medical field and to the community. ♥️

During the Coronavirus shutdown, the community has offered great support to DMPS. We're happy to return the favor when we can. Health care providers have indicated a rising need for supplies. So Central Campus director Tascha Brown stopped by school to check out the supply closets today. Gloves, masks, gowns, and other supplies from Central's nursing program, marine biology program, science classes and more were gathered up for a donation to Unity Point. Other high schools are doing the same to provide a little additional help where it may be put to better use.

While this extended break from school will be difficult for our DMPS students of all grades - the Kindergarten though 2nd grade years stand to lose the most “learning gains” as this is still a crucial time for those “learning highways and maps” in the developing child’s mind. These are some excellent resources parents and caregivers can use for our K-2 students! Parents - keep your kids learning!
Your rewards are bonding, attachment and no loss of learning! Have fun!! This is what our DMPS teachers do for your children every day they are in school and the classroom! ♥️👨‍🏫👩‍🏫📒📙📘📗📕

FREE *at-home* learning packets for K, 1st, and 2nd! If your school is closed, you are granted permission to email files to parents or post in a secure spot online (somewhere parents can log in).

Please help get the word out to anyone you know who needs them! Thank you! 💕

Monday's are traditionally a day off for those in the business of cutting hair, but the library at Howe Elementary was abuzz midday as an ad hoc barbershop. Barbers for the Future is the nonprofit brainchild of Mayra Quintanilla of Platinum Kutz. One of her clients there is Howe PE teacher Ben Krieg and when she was cutting his hair recently she asked him if BFTF could come to Howe and give away some free trims. Krieg carried the request to principal Trent Williams who loved the idea. When permission slips went home, so did enough Howe parents to keep Mayra and three of her colleagues busy/buzzy for two hours designing zig-zags and fades on almost 20 heads and putting smiles on as many faces.

Sesame Street was the most educational influence on young children of our time. It not only engaged young children in learning, but also their parents! Parents are a child’s first and most important teacher. We must always include parents in any learning activity or initiative with students from preschool through graduation. It is the most important learning we can gift to our kids and to their parents.

Michael Bennet, the first public schools superintendent to run for president, announced a group of over 70 educators who have endorsed his candidacy for President. Iowa’s educators are consistently amongst the highest bloc of caucusgoers and many have voiced their support for Michael's education plan, Equal Must Be Equal. Michael has made listening to educators a priority in his visits to Iowa. His education platform is clearly influenced by his time as a school superintendent, which is why his priorities are different from those of other candidates. Michael is much more focused on free preschool, than free college, and believes we must equip the 70% of kids who don't graduate from a 4 year college with the skills they need to earn a living wage upon graduation from high school. You can find the full list here: https://michaelbennet.com/…/Educators_for_Bennet_11_05_19.p…
Join presidential candidate Michael Bennet this Thursday, at 5:30pm at Central Campus in Des Moines, as he unveils his plan to ensure equal educational opportunity for every child in America. Michael's campaign is all about listening, and he wants to hear from you. As a former superintendent, there's nobody who better understands the importance of giving children the tools they need to reach their full potential. We'll also be celebrating back to school season by holding a school supply drive at our town hall. Learn about Michael's plans to secure America's future and bring some supplies to help local schools by RSVPing here: https://www.mobilize.us/bennetforiowa/event/115428/ See you there! If you’d like to donate supplies but are unable to make the event please contact [email protected]
