ATscale, the Global Partnership for Assistive Technology

This is an important read. The investment in assistive devices, including eyeglasses, has a return on the future success of all our our communities. #VisionForAll

In our new report - The Case for Investing in Assistive Technology - we find that the provision of four products – eyeglasses, wheelchairs, hearing aids, and prostheses – to all who need them today would yield more than USD 10 trillion over 55 years, or a return on investment (ROI) of 9:1.

Example: A child that receives the right assistive technology can increase their income by on average USD 100,000 over the course of their life.

Providing AT to all who need it would add over one billion additional years of ‘perfect health’ (quality-adjusted life years or QALYs) for those in need today.

Over a billion people could live more social lives through access to the right assistive technology.

The report presents new analysis strengthening the argument for prioritising the provision of assistive technology to those in need—including some of the first return on investment modelling for assistive technology.

We know that a wheelchair, an artificial limb, a pair of eyeglasses or a hearing aid can make the difference between failure or success at school, between a job or unemployment, between a life of opportunity or a life of dependency. Assistive Technology can help unlock the potential of hundreds of millions of people and promote more equitable outcomes for all. It can have a strong, positive impact on individuals, their families, communities and entire nations.

We therefore call on governments, including those of low- and middle-income countries, and donor organisations to “leave no one behind”, which must include people who need assistive technology.

It is time to prioritise action and investment in assistive technology – for the 90% still in need around the world.
