Wondering who from St. Anthony School & Community Center will follow in the mighty footsteps of James Van Der Zee!

On this day in 1983 Harlem Renaissance Photographer James Van Der Zee passed away @ age 96. Van Der Zee was born June 29, 1886 in Lenox, Massachusetts. As a child, he learned piano, violin, and art. He received his first camera at the age of 14 from a magazine promotion. After moving to New York City, Van Der Zee worked as a darkroom technician at a department store. In 1917, he opened his own studio, Guarantee Photography, and was immediately successful. In 1932, he outgrew his first studio and opened the larger GGG Studio. During the Great Depression, when demand for professional photographs was reduced, Van Der Zee supported himself by shooting passport photographs and other photographic jobs. Van Der Zee photographed many famous individuals, including Marcus Garvey, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, and Countee Cullen. His work was featured in the 1969 “Harlem on my Mind” exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His complete collection totaled 75,000 photographs. Van Der Zee received the Living Legacy Award from President Jimmy Carter in 1978 and an honorary doctorate from Howard University in 1983. Biographies of Van Der Zee include “The World of James VanDerZee” (1969) and “James VanDerZee” (1973). His name is enshrined in the Ring of Genealogy at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit, Michigan.

Black and Hispanic Child Prodigies Are Often Neglected in Scholarship

"While low-income and minority children are just as capable as those in families with more resources, they are likely to experience different outcomes and supports," Professor Donna Ford said in a 2016 NY Times article.

Finding true peers is most challenging for prodigies whose families have few resources and are culturally diverse.

"Miss Swann. She was my fourth grade teacher in Hinesville, Georgia. Horace Mann Elementary School. And she used to sit and read all the time. You know, she would give us homework, and I would be like, 'I couldn’t understand it. I couldn’t read it.' She was like, 'OK, come back after school' and she would help me read it. And she just passed away. Miss Ann Swann. My 4th Grade teacher. My favorite teacher ever."--From "Little Shaq Star of the Week" (published October 18, 2016)

By the way, Shaq's Miss Swann reminds me of our very own fourth grade teacher Ms. Davenport!

Among dire news reports of “failing schools” in Dallas, Texas, here is something refreshing: a successful inner-city public charter elementary-middle school.

Frankly, as St. Anthony School & Community Centers after school teacher and grant writer, we need and deserve your support to stay on top.

Today, I am issuing a personal appeal and challenge to all of my friends, family, alumni, neighbors, colleagues, group members, business partners and Face-book followers to “Get Up & Give” in the North Texas Giving Day this Thursday, September 22, 2016—my birthday.

I will be tracking my people and announce which group was the #1 “Cheerful Givers.”

Did You Know

That St. Anthony School is an International Baccalaureate (IB) school for the primary programme? Yes, we are one of seven authorized IB schools in Dallas and Fort Worth, TX and the only public-charter school so designated.

“With the IB’s rigorous standards and curriculum, we are proud to prepare the next generation of global citizens,” says Principal David Ray, who brought the program to the inner-city school nine years ago.

IB schools develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills needed to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world, according to the IB Global Centre Regional Office of the Americas.

Our Story

St. Anthony School is a public college preparatory school located in the heart of Fair Park, a historically underserved neighborhood in the southern sector of Dallas. It was established in 1946 as a parochial elementary school. In 1995, with the help of a grant from the Crystal Charity Ball, the St. Anthony Community Center was added to help meet the needs of its students, parents and neighboring community. In 2003, the school was converted to a Texas charter school and the affiliation with the Catholic Diocese of Dallas was dissolved. St. Anthony School is authorized as an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School for its elementary grades and is part of a network of 3,324 IB World Schools in 141 countries dedicated to changing the lives of students through a strong academic curriculum.

The school’s mission is to develop inquiring, responsible, knowledgeable and caring young people who make better decisions for themselves and the world through intercultural understanding and respect. This is achieved by creating an environment based upon rigorous academics, innovative instruction, high expectations, a wide variety of athletics and activities, parent and community involvement, and a constant focus on the core values of integrity, inquiry, choices, and reflection. Every student has unique educational needs and objectives. The school’s central goal is to provide excellent educational opportunities for all students, so they will be prepared to compete with the rest of the nation’s most talented students in high schools, colleges and universities across the country and internationally. The Community Center provides the bridge between school , home and community and supports the school’s mission by providing quality academic and arts education and social enrichment and services.

• St. Anthony School District has been recognized by the State of Texas as “Exemplary.”
