Crazy Cool Science

Would you ever mail a letter or a gift without a package? No way! How would it ever arrive? Let us break down a new study published at #ISC21 that shows reduced stroke size by almost 70% and reduced brain swelling by 60% using a simple topic: The Mail. Stroke size is an important predictor of post-stroke outcomes…the smaller the stroke and the less the brain swells, the more likely a stroke survivor is to have better outcomes!

A stroke treatment using nanoparticles (acting as an envelope to protect and direct the stroke treatment), delivered a highly targeted therapy (the letter) in a new study on mice.

NA1, is a small protein that has promise in saving brain cells from death after stroke, but it often doesn’t arrive intact at the cells it’s supposed to treat (think about mailing a letter with no package or envelope). Yale researchers thought that maybe, a nanoparticle protectant used to deliver the NA1 (acting like an envelope or box) could help deliver the treatment to damaged brain cells – ensuring a seamless delivery of treatment with hopes of reducing stroke size and brain swelling.

When the treatment was safely delivered to mice in the nanoparticle “envelope,” stroke size and brain swelling were significantly reduced, compared to the mice who received treatment without the protective “envelope”.

How many hours of sleep do you get a night? If you find sleep is harder to come by these days, you aren't alone. But as one expert says, "Sleep, like diet, doesn't have to be perfect for it to be perfectly fine. The bottom line is, getting most of your sleep during your biological night is important. But it doesn't have to be all of it."

💤 15-45 minute power naps are best. They work because you don't drop into deep sleep and aren't waking up disoriented and groggy.

💤 Sleep replacement naps can be useful for times when you don't get enough sleep the night before. These last a full sleep cycle that may be as long as two hours.

💤 The third kind of nap – when a person starts nodding off during the day because they are so tired the pressure to fall asleep builds up – is not restorative.

Results from a study presented at the International Stroke Conference 2021 shows depression may affect 1/3 of stroke survivors, and new research also found that stroke survivors were more likely than heart attack patients to develop depression. Women who survived a stroke had a 20% higher risk of developing depression than male survivors. All of this suggests depression isn’t only a short-term consequence of difficulties adjusting to life after stroke and emphasizes the importance of screening and treatment.

🍎 🍇 + 🥬 🥕 🥦 = a longer, healthier life! New research reveals that Americans who ate 2 servings of fruit and 3 servings of vegetables daily lived the longest. But not all fruits and veggies are created equal. Spinach, kale, carrots and berries are better picks than corn, peas, fruit juices or potatoes.

How science evolved its views on women's health

Views on how science explored women's health have changed slowly, say researchers who have been part of historic investigations. For #InternationalWomensDay, we look at how science is overcoming its own blind spots.

It might seem obvious now, but medical research hasn't always emphasized differences between men and women.

"I could either lead a cautious, mediocre and sedentary life, or I could abandon the ordinary by taking my own journey to the extraordinary."

That's Dr. Akil Taherbhai view from the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, which he climbed after overhauling his lifestyle – and his life – after bypass surgery. He started by embracing a plant-based diet. And as soon as he was able, he started walking, then jogging, and ultimately, mountain climbing.

"Adventure may hurt you, but monotony will kill you," says Akil, who's now 72. He's also bungee jumped in New Zealand, soared over the Brazilian forest canopy and coastline on a hang glider and even jumped out of an airplane. Next up: Swimming with sharks.

(6/6) “Are you sharing your story? People don’t realize the impact that their story can make. It can change lives and it can save lives.”

What’s your heart story? We’d love for you to share it in the comments.

(5/6) “If you’re looking to move more, start where you are. We tell ourselves, 5 minutes? What’s that going to do? But I stuck to it. That 5 minutes was all I could do, and that’s what I did. Until it built up to 10, 15 minutes and eventually I was walking an hour a day.”

This is such great advice from Debora Grandison, a survivor living with cardiomyopathy and diabetes. When she started her health journey, she could only walk on the treadmill for 5 minutes. But she recognized 5 minutes was the start, not the destination.

Where are you on your fitness journey?
