💬 Caption this: Pietro Paolini’s “Bacchic Concert”

🍷 This painting’s title refers to a 17th-century European tradition of representing contemporary musical performances in ancient costumes. Here, the Roman god of wine, Bacchus, plays a pipe surrounded by a group of musicians. In the midst of this raucous scene of inebriated music-making, the figure to the left turns her back away from the viewer to read a sonnet by the Renaissance poet Petrarch.

“One of the most interesting things for me about curating this exhibition was discovering what a great painter Gris is. He's most often discussed in terms of his conceptual approach to Cubism and these very complex geometric systems that underlie his compositions . . . but I really wasn't prepared until I saw these works in person for just how beautiful the surfaces are . . . The surfaces of his paintings are entirely activated.”
–Dr. Nicole R. Myers, The Barbara Thomas Lemmon Senior Curator of European Art
