Go Red for Women

Go Red for Women We are the American Heart Association’s national movement to end heart disease and stroke in women because it’s not just a man’s disease. Go Red For Women is the American Heart Association’s national movement to end heart disease and stroke in women because it’s not just a man’s disease.

In fact, more women than men die every year from heart disease and stroke. The good news is that 80 percent of cardiac events can be prevented with education and lifestyle changes. Go Red For Women advocates for more research and swifter action for women’s heart health. The movement harnesses the energy, passion and power women have to band together and collectively wipe out heart disease and stroke. It challenges them to know their risk for heart disease and take action to reduce their personal risk. It also gives them the tools they need to lead a heart-healthy life. “When you are struggling. Allow others to help you when you need it. It’s like a gift you’re giving to the people who care about you. You need the help; they want to help. Don’t be too proud. Everyone wins.”

Stephanie Austin prided herself on being tough and independent, so sharing what she was going through after her cardiac arrest and asking for help wasn’t easy. But she came to realize accepting help from friends, family and a therapist was the ultimate sign of strength and something to be proud of.

“What you’re experiencing doesn’t only happen to you, but everyone that loves you. I couldn’t recommend therapy more. Where some might say it’s sign of weakness, I think it’s just the opposite. There’s strength in taking every step to improve yourself. In addition to being a believer in therapy, I think it's vital to be brave enough to be open and honest with loved ones and if you're lucky enough, someone else who can relate to your experiences. Survival of something like what I had is unique, so having a support group of others with similar experiences, fears, vulnerabilities is incredibly helpful and builds confidence.”

Maybe you haven’t been active for a while? National Walking Day is a great day to get back to it. Just take it one step at a time. Try this:

Take the dog out for a walk.
Park farther away.
Take the stairs, even if just for a floor or two.
Call up a friend and walk around the block while you catch up.
