What’s really behind the restaurant ‘labor shortage’?

“People in front-of-house and back-of-house [of restaurants] are shopping around,” she said. “And they’re looking for things they value like, ‘Am I going to work in a safe environment? Am I going to work in an environment where I’m not going to be harassed or bullied or forced to work for free?’ So there’s just a lot of things at play, but I really don’t think it’s as simple as the stories that grab the most attention.”

In a sharp reversal, restaurants that once grappled with widespread pandemic-induced layoffs are now struggling to find enough workers to fill positions as...

Please share with anyone who has an experience with Food Trucks

The City of Dallas is considering expanding its food truck ordinance, and staff is comparing best practices across cities for food trailers (e.g. an airstream attached to a pick up truck) and food service from shipping containers. Austin's ordinance, from what I understand, is very liberal in allowing for lots of options.
.
Forbes Magazine has claimed that it costs $50k-200k for a food truck, and turn-key food trailers are potentially much less ($25k or less), which could allow more food service providers to enter the business and more equitable access to food options throughout the City. Staff will brief the Quality of Life Committee in late Feb on its best practices research.
.
CALL TO ACTION: If you have experience in this industry and have suggestions for what is and is not working in the City's current food truck ordinance, OR if you are a food service operator who is barred from entry now (because food trucks are too expensive) but would consider using a trailer or shipping container, please shoot me an email and tell me your story: [email protected] (SUBJECT line: Food Trailers).
.
Thank you to CM Adam Bazaldua, CM Paula Caldwell Blackmon and CM Jaime Resendez for your leadership on this food access and economic development issue.
.

COVID-19 Study | UT Southwestern Medical Center

Hey everyone - We love science and are super excited about free COVID tests always.

After completing a quick online survey, you schedule a free PCR test that you administer yourself and you give a vial of blood (which takes about 1 minute) that checks for antibodies. They send you Covid results if you’re positive 24-48 hours and then your antibody test in a few weeks, along with a $20 Amazon gift card!

Especially keeping safe this holiday season, why not take a test ✌️

Together We Can Do Better

The truth is that restaurant workers are a vulnerable population. Our services are needed as copays and deductibles are high and often have to be paid in full before treatment can even begin. Not all treatment facilities have payment plans, or financial aid, depending on the diagnosis and price of the treatment. Also, restaurant work is unlike jobs that take place at a desk. Restaurant jobs are frequently all or nothing; no sick leave and no time off to recover.

OUR COMMITMENT Heard That’s founders have experienced firsthand the fear of being unable to receive medical care because of the lack of funds. We can truly be an empathic support system for the community. We commit to providing clients with emotional support, assistance with medical forms, fundraising and providing direct financial assistance following our Steps of Service Program.

OUR PHILOSOPHY When faced with a health crisis, the whole process can be extremely overwhelming. Our goals are to first help you feel supported and at ease. We are here to listen to what you have to say. As an organization, we will do our best to help you and to maintain a relationship throughout the healing process. Gratitude, compassion and inclusion are our guiding principles.

OUR APPROACH We are working to expand our network and fundraise to create our Steps of Service Program that will quickly assess and address the barriers to healthcare brought to us. We will serve as a resource to the Dallas restaurant community that business owners and employees alike can use to bridge gaps in healthcare coverage.
