Only 3 days until our Homecoming concert - and the world premiere of Quinn Mason's Rise to the Occasion! Here's a little sneak peek from rehearsal 🎶 In an interview with Ms. Rojas last month, Mason - a Dallas native & rising star in the orchestral world - shared more about his inspiration behind the piece:

"The piece, first and foremost, is a tribute to Rick Giangiulio. I actually had the privilege to apprentice as a conductor under Rick during the 19-20 season...I got to interact with him between the breaks and listen to his very, very cool stories. One of the stories he told me was how when he got started with the youth orchestra, they kinda said 'Here, here's the youth orchestra!' and Rick [said] 'Uh, what do I do here?' because he said he was new to conducting at that time."

"He started with the youth orchestra and programmed...fairly simple pieces to start at first to help with his conducting. But as the years went by, his skills got better and he started programming huge masterworks: Shostakovich 10, the Mahler 1...so Rick was presented with an opportunity. He pretty much rose to the occasion, which is where the title of the piece came from. That was very inspiring to me...Having interacted with Rick, I knew I wanted to write something in tribute to him, especially considering it's his 40th season which is a huge accomplishment so congratulations to him."

You can listen to more of Mason’s music on his website 👉 masonianmusic.com #GDYO is honored to premiere Rise to the Occasion this Sunday, October 17 @ 8 pm. Tickets still available at gdyo.org/tickets - buy in advance to avoid the line at the box office that night!
