BREAKING: On Friday, November 19, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 220 to 213 to pass the Build Back Better package, excluding a pathway to citizenship for millions of our undocumented community members. Included in the bill is a temporary program known as parole-in-place: an immigration provision that can protect millions of undocumented people in this country.
.
.
The Parole option that passed is not a pathway to citizenship, this program would undoubtedly give relief to our clients and millions of people in this country, but the FIGHT FOR CITIZENSHIP IS NOT OVER. The bill now goes to the Senate, where we have a chance to fight for more.
.
.
We need all hands on deck now to push Senate Dems Leaders to do everything in their power to expand paths to citizenship in the bill by using every tool, which should include Vice President Kamala Harris using her power to overrule the Parliamentarian or ending the filibuster.
.
.
We cannot let the Biden White House and Senate Democrats hide behind procedural recommendations made by unelected bureaucrats when they have the majority to deliver for our communities.
.
.
We will continue to stand strong with our community partners and organizations like RAICES, United We Dream and NAKASEC Action Fund (to name a few) to fight for citizenship for the more than 7 million undocumented people in this country and hold Democrats accountable to the promises they made to the immigrant community.
.
.
Do not lose sight of what must come next, friends. Join our efforts. Want to help? Tell Senate DEMS to take the next step: 202-410-5589 #WeAreHome

THANK YOU for your constant support!

Hi my name is [your name]. I'm calling today to ask [name of representative] to vote YES on the Build Back Better Act.

Right now, our underfunded immigration system means that survivors, who have already been through so much, must wait years and years for stability. It's time for this grueling wait to end. Please vote yes to protect the millions of immigrants who call America home.

The Biden administration has said it’s expediting the process for U visa applicants, so they can work while they wait for their applications to be processed. But a huge backlog of cases means many immigrants who've applied could be waiting months for work authorization.

All month, HRI is collecting donations to help families purchase gifts and necessities for Holiday Wish.

“Thanks to generous support, we’ve been able to provide unprecedented aid through the pandemic,” said Sierra Houck, speaking for HRI’s Social Services Program. “Our clients have shown incredible resilience and resourcefulness, but they continue to feel the impact of the pandemic and recession. We’re asking the community to come together again to ensure that families can celebrate at year’s end without sacrificing basic needs.”

Our goal is to provide for 50 or more households. Funds raised beyond our goal may be used to sustain HRI’s ongoing legal and social services programs.

A miracle-worker who made our most fantastical ideas into reality, Blake came to HRI as a systems and processes virtual volunteer in the summer of 2021. He lives in Atlanta, GA.
.
.
Blake is adept at programming and created a sleek program for our annual audit. This program takes the administrative burden of our annual audit off of the staff completely. The program formats raw data into an unique and passcode protected link to send to all pro bono attorneys or firms that worked on HRI cases in the fiscal year. This program collects and inputs the data from the pro bono into a tidy spreadsheet.
.
.
He was a joy to work with on this project! Blake is creative, proficient, and an excellent critical thinker. He worked in every tiny change to the program and solved complex problems. He found solutions to every one of my suggestions and preemptively solved problems. Our ideas that we thought were fantastical, Blake made into a reality. He is a fast learner, masterful worker, and a genuinely kind human. THANK YOU, Blake!

From our friends at UndocuBlack Network:

The UndocuBlack Network (UBN), @africansus , @instabaji , and Black Immigrant Collective are launching two days of action focused on the Liberian Refugee Immigration Fairness (LRIF) program, approximately one month from the application deadline of December 20, 2021.

The LRIF Days of Action take place from November 17, 2021 to November 18, 2021. Please join us in our advocacy to create justice for Black immigrants. The LRIF Days of Action serve multiple purposes: to inform our communities of available resources and the deadline, to sound the alarm loud and clear about the importance of LRIF, and to advocate for Congress to eliminate the arbitrary LRIF deadline.

For resources on how to apply for LRIF, go to undocublack.org/lrif & check out our LRIF Highlights.

Record number of immigrants funneled into alternative detention programs

The number of migrants being monitored under a surveillance program launched as an alternative to traditional detention facilities has grown astronomically during the Biden administration.
.
.
A record 136,026 immigrants are now being monitored under Immigration and Custom Enforcement’s (ICE) Intensive Supervision Appearance Program (ISAP), up from 86,000 at the beginning of the year.
.
.
That growth has alarmed critics who say the program causes mental and physical harm to immigrants while doing little to divert them away from ICE's brick-and-mortar facilities.

Two ICE-Air mass deportation flights to Cameroon in the fall of 2020 returned over 80 individuals to a country wracked by protracted violence. Now a complaint detailing their harrowing experiences has been filed with the US Department of Homeland Security Office of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties (CRCL) and Office of the Inspector General (OIG) by seven co-signing immigrants' rights organizations.
.
.
In this podcast, three parties to the complaint, “Ray,” “Castillo,” and “Godswill,” expose in excruciating detail how ICE agents hacked a full-body restraint called The WRAP (considered a “life-saving device” by its manufacturer, Safe Restraints, Inc.) to coerce, threaten, punish, force compliance, and torture Black asylum seekers during deportations on Omni Air International, aka the “death plane.”

Yes, the struggle for freedom and equality around the world lives in Dallas, Texas, too. At Human Rights Initiative. We are lawyers and social workers, pastors and students. We are regular working people. Through a network of dedicated volunteers, Human Rights Initiative helps those who have suffered terrible wrongs at home for worshiping their God. No family, no friends. No money. And often, very little hope. Our Story

We are lawyers and social workers, pastors and students. We are regular working people. Through a strong network of dedicated pro-bono lawyers and volunteers, for the past 18 years Human Rights Initiative has helped those who have suffered terrible wrongs at home for worshiping their God - For speaking out against oppression - For being women. We provide legal representation and social services free of charge to those who have fled persecution and arrived in Dallas, Texas with little or nothing.

When the hateful rhetoric is loud and raucous, it can be tempting to lose sight of why we do what we do. But we are easily drawn back to our mission by our fearless clients and our incredible supporters.

Our clients are the 11-year-old girls fleeing countries like Honduras and El Salvador because they were being stalked by gang members. They are the women who give up everything they have ever known in order to escape the relentless cycle of domestic abuse. They are the parents of young children who are sexually assaulted and work with law enforcement to ensure the offender is put in jail. And they are the “defenders of democracy” who stand up to corrupt politicians in countries like Cameroon and Zimbabwe and pay the price for their candor in broken bones and other trauma.

At Human Rights Initiative, we provide the resources – the hope – these courageous people need to leave their persecutors behind and begin anew.
