"The truth is, I lost the person I used to be the second I found out my mother had a stroke and in writing this, I hope that I, along with others reading this in similar situations, can process our emotions to learn more about this new version of ourselves."

In May 2019, my mother, Heather Scott, suffered a stroke caused by an intraparenchymal brain hemorrhage, cerebral edema, and superior sagittal sinus thrombosis. This led to complications such as seizure and clotting disorders along with a hemicraniectomy to remove the right side of her skull, reliev...

Stroke affects the whole family. Here's how Carol and Rich kept it all together after Rich's stroke:

- Carol wrote down everything. It helped Rich see how far he'd come in recovery.

- Manage stress levels by taking it step at a time. "It's got to be one day at a time, one week at a time, and not, 'How will he be a year from now?'"

- If you have a local support system be honest about what you need, whether it's a decadent snack or help around the house.

- Find support groups through local hospitals and social media groups to connect with families who are going through similar experiences.

Survivors and caregivers, is there any other advice you would add? http://spr.ly/6187yDHeH #StrokeMonth

February 14 2011.. 10 years ago today I suffered a stroke. Spent 3 days in ICU then another 2 weeks in the hospital recovering. The first 5-6 years after were so difficult. Fighting depression due to dramatic life change. Going from running a business in 2 states (sold business after stroke) with over 100 employees to laying on the couch doing nothing. It was rough but my wife and kids did not let me give up. Here I am today, running a successful business which is growing with new locations and has been all over local news radio and tv stations. I thank god every day but I thank my family for not letting me give up!
