When Reginald Freeman came to Hartford in February 2016 to become the 37th chief of the Hartford Fire Department, he had no shortage of internal and external blazes to deal with. A little over two years before his hiring, firefighter Kevin Bell was killed in a house fire on Blue Hills Avenue. It was...

Day 28 - African Americans in the Fire Service (Dallas BFFA BHM finale) You are Black History!

We have enjoyed celebrating Black History Month, "African-Americans in the Fire Service" edition with you and we hope that you have appreciated our efforts. Know that we need and appreciate you.

For the final day, we decided to recognize and celebrate YOU, the members, in a tribute video. All photos were taken from the IDS page. A few younger members have yet to have their photos uploaded to the IDS, so we posted their names. If your photo is not in the video, blame my head and not my heart. However, we feel that we have all 319 members accounted for. Enjoy!

Day 27 - African Americans in the Fire Service (Retiree James Hill Interview)

For Black History Month, we chose to interview retired Firefighter/Driver-Engineer, James Hill who served as President of both, the BFFA and the International Association. As history has shown us, the preserving of our contributions has not been kind. With that, it's incumbent upon us to create, capture and sustain our own history. Big "shout-out" to Mr. Hill (and others) for his time, commitment, service and dedication to the advancement of African Americans within the Fire Service. Click the video to hear his perspective on being Black in the Fire Service.

(Interview was 38 minutes, we trimmed it down to 14 minutes. For full video, contact Correspondence Secretary, Julius (JuJu) Walker)

It is with deep sadness that we announce the loss of our very own, Battalion Chief Edward Karriem.

The Little Rock Fire Department responded to a house fire at 9925 Stardust Trail, Saturday, February 13, 2021 at 10:52 a.m. Upon arrival on the scene, firefighters reported smoke visible from the one story wood-frame residential structure. Rescue and Firefighting operations began immediately.

Eight (08) pieces of Fire/Rescue equipment and approximately nineteen (19) emergency response personnel ultimately responded to the call. Battalion Chief Edward Karriem was the commanding officer of this incident. The fire was brought under control at 11:22 a.m. There were no civilian injuries. The origin and cause of the fire is under investigation.

During firefighting/overhaul procedures, Battalion Chief Edward Karriem (41yo) was observed to be unresponsive in his Command vehicle; fire crews performed CPR and MEMS transported him in critical condition to Baptist Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. The cause of death is pending the Medical Examiner’s Report. Chief Karriem faithfully served this city and the Division of Fire Services for seventeen (17) years. Our sincere prayers are extended to the family, loved ones and friends.
