We're looking for volunteers in Dallas! We're working onsite all next week to turn a parking lot into a park.
The Park at Forest-Audelia is a 30-day pilot aimed at getting community feedback on what they'd like to see in the space permanently. Every single day is programmed, so if you can't volunteer, don't worry, you can still come out and enjoy the space.
All the details can be found (as well as the volunteer sign-up) at the link in our bio.

How do you demonstrate an intersection transformation when the rain won’t allow you to be outside? Work with a local artist, explore an abandoned building (nix the idea of the abandoned building), grab a canvas, and bring the intersection inside.
Thanks to @placemakingus for inviting us to be part of the conversation in Flint, and thank you to Flint for welcoming us to your community.

Why do a pilot project? Because you can test the idea, get feedback from the community, and then create the permanent changes, just like they did here in West Allis.

We’re working on a bit of a different project in Montgomery County this week.
The goal of this one is more focused on wayfinding and making connections/raising awareness of two regional trails. We’re addressing these connections with signage, stickers on the ground, and murals by local artists.

It's Park(ing) Day! Our friends at Spin gave out 29 $1,000 grants to folks around the world to turn spaces meant for cars into spaces designed for people.
We're so excited to see what everyone comes up with.
Here's a photo of an installation we worked on a couple years ago. We were inspired by the trampolines built into the sidewalks in Copenhagen, which created for unexpected moments of joy. So we recreated it for Park(ing) Day in Dallas. Everything we used (except the astroturf) came from Wikiblock.

Two years ago, we launched the concept of the Better Block in a Box with this yellow shipping container. It has traveled around the country, creating placemaking events wherever it goes.
But it was merely version 1. We have learned SO MUCH about containers since we launched this concept. So the original Box is being retired and turned into something new.
Check back in October to see what it becomes. Meanwhile, we're working on Better Block in a Box 2.0.

Washington DC trail lovers, this one is for you! 🪴 🌻🚲 🏃🏽‍♂️

The Pike District Connector is a one mile bike and ped path in North Bethesda that, once installed, will complete the loop on a huge regional trail system. The Better Block team will be on the ground 9/15-9/17 with volunteers to add community-requested final touches, like semi-permanent wayfinding, public art, playful seating, and even a pollinator garden. Roll your sleeves up with us and sign up at tinyurl.com/pikedistrict.

Over the past year, schools have seen an increased value in outdoor classrooms. We worked with St. Cecilia Catholic School, just down the street from us, to transform an underutilized space into a classroom setting with a garden, whiteboards, picnic tables, shade, and color--so much color.

Can't wait to see the students' reactions next week!

We're outsourcing some of our CNC work to a local fabricator for a project in Virginia. They just sent us a note showing us our latest design, which Mia, an 11th grader at Halifax County HS, is helping on.
Love seeing students using digital fabrication to reshape neighborhoods.

A look at our transformation of B Street in Quincy, Washington.
With some apple bins, a lot of paint, and even more volunteers, we were able to take this street from a place solely for cars to a place for people in just 3 days.
Thanks to Microsoft for bringing us into this project, and thanks to the neighbors of Quincy for inviting us into their community.

Our next project is in Northeast Dallas at the intersection of Forest & Audelia. Similar to last year's Vickery Meadows project, we are planning a pavement to park transformation that will encourage community gathering and a safe space for kids in the neighborhood.

If you're in Dallas and interested in participating, come join the kickoff next Tuesday. We'll meet at the Forest-Audelia Youth Boxing Gym at 6PM and will provide dinner for attendees. All ages and community members are welcome!

One of our amazing partners for the MLK Food Park was Dallas Free Press, who turned our Tracy Kiosk into a pop-up newsroom. Here's a bit about their experience from their recent newsletter:

"Not very much."

This was the answer one South Dallas neighbor gave in response to our survey question: "If you were to describe how Dallas media think of your neighborhood, what two or three words would you use?"

We met him at the MLK Food Park, where we spent four weekends listening and learning via our pop-up newsroom. A few dozen people took our news and information survey and were thanked with $5 tokens to use at the vendor booths.

This particular resident lived in the immediate area and came looking for a bite to eat. He didn't end up finishing the survey, so his answers won't be part of the official report from UT Austin's Center for Media Engagement, but his answer to this question is seared into my brain, and it will impact the work of Dallas Free Press in coming months and years.

Today is the final day to take the survey." Go here to do so: https://utexas.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_2bG9W1lV3bMW2R7

Our latest parklet is complete! This was a fun one with a couple unique requests: a stage area that could be closed off or opened up to the lot around it, and it had to fit into a few diagonal parking spots. Oh, and there was quite a slope (which the @placefab feet helped address).
We had fun working on this one for the city of Weatherford, and can’t wait to see how it’s activated!
