1. Take your medication: Your medication works best when it is at a constant level in your body. Follow your doctor’s recommendation regarding the timing of your dosages.

2. Find a Movement Disorder Specialist: A movement disorder specialist is a neurologist who has pursued specialized training in movement disorders. Outcomes are much better in people who see a movement disorder specialist because their doctors can customize treatment and fine-tune multiple medications.

3. Eat Healthy Meals: Consuming a variety of foods from all five food groups provides consistent energy and keeps your immune system healthy. Focus on eating a minimum of five fruits and vegetables each day, eating a variety of high fiber foods, and staying hydrated, all of which help prevent constipation, which is often an issue for people diagnosed with YOPD.

What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. It is also called Emancipation Day or Juneteenth Independence Day. The name “Juneteenth” references the date of the holiday, combining the words “June” and “nineteenth.”

What is the origin of Juneteenth?
Juneteenth was originally celebrated in Texas, on June 19, 1866. It marked the first anniversary of the day that African Americans there first learned of the Emancipation Proclamation, more than two years after it was initially issued. The holiday was originally celebrated with prayer meetings and by singing spirituals and wearing new clothes to represent newfound freedom. Within a few years, African Americans were celebrating Juneteenth in other states, making it an annual tradition.

Living Well with PD: Alcohol Use
Review your use of alcohol with your P*P and neurologist, since alcohol can exacerbate low blood pressure, affect balance, impair mood and thinking functions, worsen apathy and interact with your medications. This may not mean you must avoid alcohol altogether, but be aware of how it interacts with your medications and assess the benefits versus the risk.

DAPS: Empowering those affected by Parkinson’s disease to live active and fulfilling lives

The Dallas Area Parkinsonism Society (DAPS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1978 by Clarice Dougherty to help her husband and others confront the daily challenges presented by Parkinson's disease (PD). Thousands of lives have been changed for the better because of Clarice's mission and the dedication of the those who have followed in her footsteps.

DAPS serves as a resource for the Parkinson’s community by providing education, socialization, speech and exercise classes, and support groups. DAPS’ services and programs are provided free of charge or at a reduced rate for participants. The services page of our website offers a more detailed description of our programs and services. Our groups page provides a map and a listing of class times and locations.

DAPS is a local organization with no government funding or national organization support. We depend on membership donations, honorariums, fundraisers, grants, and corporate sponsorships to fund our many programs. In addition, we are able to fulfill our mission thanks to the kindness of individuals and families who have been so touched by our services that they remember us in their wills, trusts, and foundations.

DAPS has an Executive Director, a small office staff, and several professionally trained therapists; everything else is accomplished by dedicated volunteers.

Hi everyone! I’m here for my mom who has PD. I wondered if any of you could share your suggestions for a doctor in dfw. She really needs to feel like she’s being heard and needs someone that will pull information out of her if needed. She needs someone who she thinks is smart but kind or she’s not going to want to go to appointments. Thank you in advance for any recommendations, hopefully this is ok to ask here.
I'm so proud of my wife who was diagnosed with PD over 20 years. She had been a florist and made stained glass art pieces. so using here hands were very important to her. Now even with the struggles her hand tremors create she has started doing chalk art pieces, both for fun and profit. It is a great product that allows you to start over if you make a mistake. I have seen it provide a new attitude and drive. If you get a chance check out her work at https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.chalkcouture.com%2Freedb52%3Ffbclid%3DIwAR1g3Z8mseQZLec-086FVeB7awSXCmgyWy-Uh24h-mjElM2zVicfwUWQu34&h=AT1o-IUmbgGPd9dIx8Su0UHJt6e-NjtSuXHcRtFu_ongL6vfE8yOLACjHAe7duqrfl--zDBIszeun314IIB4YRe_3FwEGW1JxhCgtBS-v6GKxRzhvecL_TGx8fYha6S33J_h40T2AMU_XL0O554 If you are interested in joining the fun just let her know and she can help.
If you are in the DFW area and are looking for a new way to be active with early onset Parkinson’s Disease, go check out this physical therapist led group exercise class! https://www.facebook.com/allinallneurorehab/photos/a.111627493998333/138300717997677/
Hello! I am a certified speech therapist who has worked with people who have PD for over 20 years. I am currently working at U of St. Augustine, supervising graduate students who need to obtain clinical hours in order to graduate and become certified Speech Therapists. I know insurance and medicare have cut back a lot on their coverage. The university is running this clinic ProBono. Yes, you read that correctly! Now you can receive quality therapy from the comfort of your home from graduate students attending this well respected and incredible Speech therapy program. All sessions are 100% directly supervised by therapists like myself. If interested. please don't hesitate to reach out to the email below or IM me. Thank you. I hope many of you can benefit from this. Please also feel free to reach out with any questions
