A Mother's Day Message — The Bridge

Happy Mother's Day! We are grateful for all of the moms in our lives. Read this special Mother's Day message from President and CEO, Dr. David Woody, III: https://www.bridgehrc.org/news-and-media/a-mothers-day-message 🌷💟

I have been thinking about the last twelve months, and all that mothers across our community have been doing to “keep things moving” in the midst of the pandemic. Mothering. Teaching. Working. Encouraging. Empowering. Loving.

Our last #VolunteerAppreciationWeek highlight is for our wonderful volunteers who serve in the library. Without them, we would not be able to keep the library open for our Guests to check out books, use the computers, or find a quiet place to focus. The library is essential in providing Guests access to resources that elevate their potential to find jobs and recover from homelessness. For more information on volunteer opportunities, go to www.bridgehrc.org/volunteer. We are so grateful to all of our amazing volunteers who serve our Guests at The Bridge!

Today, as part of #VolunteerAppreciationWeek, we are thankful for Volunteers who stock and organize our Canned Good Pantry. In addition to our Welcome Baskets, newly graduated Guests receive staple canned goods for their new home. Not only does this alleviate some of the expense of stocking a pantry, but it also helps them practice making their own food. Want to donate canned goods? Contact us today!

Yesterday, our friends at Lovers Lane United Methodist Church blessed our campus, our Guests and our employees with a beautiful, flowered cross that they transported from their home to our home’s front door on Easter morning bringing joy to all who see it.

A very warm thank you to the congregation at Lovers Lane UMC for their continued partnership and support in making homeless recovery possible.

We hope all of our wonderful supporters had a joyful Easter day!

Social Work Spotlight: Ebony. "Hi, I am Ebony just a military brat with a heart to serve people. If you ask me where I am from, I am sure to shrug my shoulders and say that I was born in Florida but have lived in a few places. I graduated from UTA with my BA in Social Work in 2010 and have worked at Mental Health Clinics and Homeless Shelters in the DFW area since. Here at The Bridge, I continue my journey in the field of Social Work as a Care Manager. The best part of social work is being a part of someone else’s journey by pouring into them with uplifting words, adding support with addition of resources, and guiding them day-to-day to reach a potential they may have felt was impossible. The greatest day in this field is to see a Guest accomplish goals they have set for themselves to obtain stable housing and maintain other recovery services. No matter how long it may take it always WORTH IT!"

The Bridge Homeless Recovery Center is excited to be a Coronavirus Vaccine Hub for homeless citizens in Dallas! Our partnership with Parkland Hospital HOMES is allowing us to provide unsheltered homeless citizens access to a vaccination every Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. on our campus. Individuals will be rapid tested for COVID-19 before entrée on to our campus for the vaccine. This allows us to protect our campus and provide homeless citizens the opportunity to know their COVID-19 status.
We hope that by encouraging unsheltered homeless citizens to visit our campus for a vaccine that a window of opportunity for them to begin more deeply contemplating what their unique exit strategy from homelessness might happen. We are humbled to offer our homeless response system, and the Dallas community, this very important additional service on The Bridge Homeless Recovery Center campus.

Social Work Spotlight: Iesha. "My name is Iesha, I am originally from Florida, and I completed my undergraduate degree at Florida State University College of Social Work in 2015. Shortly after, I obtained my first job in social work with Dallas County Child Protective Services. I worked as a conservatorship worker for almost two years. Upon my exit from CPS, I moved into mental health, where I had my first encounter with the homeless population. At that moment, I realized my passion for the homeless community and applied for employment at The Bridge. I am currently a recovery care manager, where I assist our Guests in securing housing as well as linking our Guests to various community resources. The most enjoyable aspect of being a social worker at The Bridge is having the honor to help our Guests attain achievements in their respective lives. For every adult and family we help overcome homelessness, we have the opportunity to transform their lives by giving them the tools to cultivate & succeed, creating healthier foundations for future generations. I really just love that!"

Social Work Month Spotlight: Robert. "My name is Robert Bounkhong, I am currently an LMSW. I graduated with both my BSW and MSW from the University of Texas at Arlington. I was born and raised here in the Dallas area. I came into social work because I simply wanted to help people and be of some kind of impactful influence on others. I am approaching my 6th year here at The Bridge as a care manager. As a care manager, my job is to help folks accomplish their goals, as goals can range from simply finding a place to sleep for the night to obtaining medication so that their physical and mental wellbeing is stabilized. My most favorite part of being a care manager is being apart of someone’s story in their homeless recovery process, especially when it comes to the end, and they are able to be in a home of their own. I believe that it takes so much more than just a care manager to help end someone’s homelessness. It takes an entire organization to work alongside each other."

The Bridge Homeless Recovery Center was excited to host Ms. Christine Crossley, the new City of Dallas Office of Homeless Solutions Director, on our campus last week. Dr. David Woody, III, President and CEO, walked with Ms. Crossley from Dallas City Hall to the campus through our neighborhood, toured our facility, and facilitated the opportunity for her to engage some of our Guests and The Bridge employees.

“Ms. Crossley, welcome to our work," Dr. Woody said. "We hope you feel welcomed on our campus. Thank you for making the choice to come see our home.”

A Homeless Recovery Center

The Bridge is a Homeless Recovery Center for individuals without a home in Dallas County. Our vision is to be a one-stop-shop experience for Guests to access all of the tools they need to complete their strategy for exiting homelessness. Our doors remain open twenty-four hours per day, seven days a week, and is the only shelter in Dallas providing Day and Night Shelter Services. The Bridge offers basic need services including hot showers, meals, haircuts, and Physical and Mental Health Assessments for over 800 guests every day. On average, 1 Guest every single day is transitioning from homelessness to their own sustainable home.

This place resembles a small zoo. It’s wild, straight bananas. There is no care in their care management department. Indifference seems rooted within the Bridge foundation. There is no welcoming in their “Welcome” building. Just shuttered doors to hope. I tried over and over to give this place a chance, as there are some good workers here. But the straw that broke… was when I watched a care manager, Monique, thug-out on a guest, who had an appointment to see her and wanted MHMR help, then two other “care people,” Darian and Donniemarie, joined the clapback, without any context of the situation; nasty display cronyism. This adult-kid nearly cried and stared at the three nearly speechless. He walked off mumbling that he is not re****ed. His crime: not hearing his name called in a loud-ass building. Rudeness exemplified. #iamoutofhere
