Dr. Mathilde Krim, amfAR Founding Chairman, 1926-2018.

Today, we mourn the passing of our beloved Founding Chairman, Mathilde Krim, Ph.D. A pioneer in AIDS research and activism, Dr. Krim was at the forefront of scientific and philanthropic responses to HIV/AIDS long before the world fully understood its catastrophic global reach. She dedicated herself to increasing the public’s awareness of AIDS and became personally active in AIDS research.

As amfAR’s founding chairman, and chairman of the board from 1990 to 2004, she was the heart and soul of the organization. She helped create it, supported it, kept it afloat more than once, and guided it with extraordinary dedication.

Dr. Krim testified on Capitol Hill on several occasions and was a driving force behind legislation that expanded access to lifesaving treatment and behind efforts to scale up federal funding for AIDS research. In August 2000, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom—the highest civilian honor in the United States.

Dr. Krim was an extraordinary woman who had such a profound impact on the lives of so many. Today we remember how much she gave us and the millions for whom she dedicated her life. There is joy to be found in knowing that so many people alive today literally owe their lives to this great woman.

At the request of her family, donations may be sent in lieu of flowers to amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, 120 Wall Street, 13th Floor, New York, NY 10005, or may be made online at www.amfar.org/krim

The development of effective medical interventions—indeed, even cures—is only one step in the control of disease. Global efforts to eradicate tuberculosis and malaria serve as a warning of how cures can fail.

Research Roadmap

amfAR's Research Roadmap:
Today the scientific community has a good understanding of what the principal barrier is to a cure—reservoirs, or pockets, of virus that remain in a person even after they have reached a so-called “undetectable” level of HIV as a result of antiretroviral therapy.

It is now generally agreed that there are four key questions—all related to these reservoirs of virus—that need to be answered in order to achieve a cure. Knowing what the questions are means we can direct teams of researchers to try and find answers to them.

On this day in 1986: "That's What Friends Are For" begins its multi-week run on top of the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. The Grammy Award-winning charity single, recorded by Dionne Warwick, Elton John, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder to benefit amfAR, would go on to raise over $3 million dollars for HIV research.

On this day in 1996: Félix González-Torres, a Cuban-born American visual artist, dies from AIDS at age 38. González-Torres joined collective Group Material (with Doug Ashford, Julie Ault, and Karen Ramspacher) for 1989’s "AIDS Timeline", which placed notable events in politics, medicine and AIDS epidemic statistics in the greater context of the pop culture zeitgeist.

Many of González-Torres most famous works - such as "Untitled (Portrait of Ross in LA)" and 1991's billboard installation "Untitled”, are in honor of his lover, Ross Laycock, who also died of AIDS. (Photo courtesy Gordon Kurti Project)
