Commemorative Air Force B29 B24 Squadron The CAF B-29/B-24 Squadron's mission is to maintain, preserve and operate the world’s most famous, flying B-29A “FIFI” and B-24A "Diamond Lil".
(225)

The Commemorative Air Force was founded to acquire, restore and preserve in flying condition a complete collection of combat aircraft which were flown by all military services of the United States, and selected aircraft of other nations, for the education and enjoyment of present and future generations of Americans. More than just a collection of airworthy warplanes from the past, the CAF's fleet of historic aircraft, known as the CAF Ghost Squadron, recreate, remind and reinforce the lessons learned from the defining moments in American military aviation history.

God speed, sir!

We are saddened to learn that Michael Collins, Apollo 11 astronaut and former Director of Smithsonian’s Air & Space Museum, passed away today. He was 90 years old.

Colonel Collins piloted the Apollo 11 spacecraft in orbit around the moon while his crewmates, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, stepped down on the lunar surface.
Back on earth, he served as the director of the National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution from 1971 to 1978. During his tenure, he oversaw the construction of the museum that stands to this day - it remains one of the most beloved museums in the world. Michael Collins's impact on the Smithsonian and the entire world is indelible, and will never be forgotten.
The National Air & Space Museum shared this remembrance of his legacy: https://airandspace.si.edu/stories/editorial/carrying-fire

Retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Thomas Robert ‘Bob‘ Vaucher dies at 102

We were honored to have USAF LT. COL. THOMAS ROBERT ‘BOB‘ VAUCHER visit "FIFI" at our tour stop in Trenton, NJ in 2019. He is a true American hero, taking possession of the first B-29 delivered to the Air Air Corps by Boeing, as well as Commanding the final "Show of Force" flyover of Japan at the end of the war.

God Bless you Sir!

Retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Thomas Robert “Bob” Vaucher, the Boeing B-29 pilot who led a massive flyover of Superfortresses over Tokyo Bay during Japan’s surrender, died February 7 at age 102.

The upcoming 2021 AirPower History schedule is coming together!
Come out on out and see the B-24 "Diamond Lil", along with the
B-29 "FIFI" and their little friends at an airport near you!

Check out the preliminary schedule at https://www.airpowersquadron.org/schedule
and book your ride today!

The first flight of the famed B-24 Liberator took place #OTD in 1939. Eventually, the B-24 would become the most-produced warbird in US history, with over 18,000 built. And for all that, only two airworthy Liberators are left, one being our own Diamond Lil, which needs new landing gear before she can return to the sky. With parts so rare these days, they have to be fabricated for Lil, but fortunately, the funds were raised this year to place the order, so hopefully you see her in the air next year!

Dear Friends of the B-29/B-24 Squadron

We are nearing the end of our 12 Planes of Christmas fundraising campaign. We would like to thank all of you who have so generously contributed to support our mission and to keep “FIFI” flying. So far we have raised just $450 towards our of $10,000 goal, and as you can see, we are far short.

If you haven't already, won't you consider helping us out as well? If each member of the squadron or one of our many friends made a donation, no matter how small, I’m sure we could easily make a substantial dent in reaching our goal. So I’ll put out a final challenge — "Can we hit $5,000 by the end of the campaign?” That’s just half of our goal. We need your help! Every little bit helps!

“FIFI” is one of the most iconic aircraft of World War II. She is one 1 of only 2 of her kind still air worthy. Keeping this amazing four-engine heavy bomber flying is an intense effort, and funding is always one our greatest challenges. And every little bit helps! Please take the time to read about "FIFI" at https://fundrazr.com/61kKR0?ref=ab_39khs8.

As we prepare for the 2021 tour season, we would like to thank all of you who have so generously contributed their support. We are proud to have “FIFI" in our care and look forward to keeping her flying for many years to come. Your contribution will help us keep this amazing airplane touring the country honoring the Greatest Generation and continuing to tell that story to future generations. We hope you are inspired and encouraged to give generously. No amount is too small.

Donations to this program will only be accepted until the end of December, so check it out today!

Thank you in advance for your consideration!

Our Story

The CAF B-29/B-24 Squadron was created in the 1970s to oversee the maintenance and operation of the world’s only airworthy B-29 “FIFI”. Since that time the squadron has grown to include the CAF’s B-24A Liberator "Diamond Lil" and our PT-13 Stearman. The squadron operates these two rare bombers to honor America’s military aviation and veterans through flight and exhibition. We tour the country starting in the spring and finishing in late fall averaging over 30 city stops per season. Our tour is designed to give the public an opportunity to see these rare and precious aircraft fly, to get inside, see and touch the cockpit, and take rides if they so desire. Rides and tours are the money makers that allow us to continue to display these expensive to operate aircraft. Our volunteers do all this in an effort to keep the spirit alive of those who flew, built and maintained them for our country. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Commemorative Air Force and the B-29/B-24 Squadron, please visit our web site at www.cafb29b24.org.

Some pics of Fifi today at McKinney airport...
Took this picture sometime in the late 70's at Harlingen, Tx. It was a thrill to watch the whole start and takeoff!
Just booked the Bombardier seat in Trenton ...TOTALLY STOKED !!!
Well, it seems that the lovely "Fifi" DOES fit into the new hangar, but, y'all had to "bend" her just a bid to fit her in! This is a successful (I guess) attempt at a pano photo shot. I have some regular photos of her, too, and trust me, she's not "bent" at all, except where she was built that way! ;) I'm including one of them with the pano photo.
Some of my favorites of Fifi departing Meacham for Red Bird!
Weather was perfect today....
