This year, our team set out to visit 12 unique farms to highlight some of California's quintessential specialty crops by creating an educational video series, Beyond The Market. From almonds, walnuts, and cherries, to eggplant, okra, and peppers - we learned all about some of our favorite farmers’ market staples, and witnessed firsthand the strenuous labor that goes into producing our food. We are grateful to have had the opportunity to get to know some of the farmers that make up the fabric of our organization and thank them for their dedication to feeding our communities 🤍

Funding to California program connecting low income residents to fresh produce at risk

Thank you for the feature, KTVU Fox 2!
Last year, over $1,000,000 in benefits were distributed at PCFMA markets with over $900,000 in EBT/Market Match/WIC benefits to over 6,800 participants. The Market Match program DOUBLES the value of your EBT purchases, helping stretch your budget further to afford the fresh produce you need to fuel a healthy lifestyle! The Market Match program is essential, and we are glad to participate in matching EBT and WIC funds across our Bay Area farmers' markets.
For more information, visit https://www.pcfma.org/market-match

A statewide program that accepts food stamps, better known as Cal Fresh, as well as WIC, is having a big impact on the lives of families struggling to make ends meet. Continued funding for the program, however, is uncertain.

Black farmers | United States | Farmstogrow.com

It’s been 24 years since Timothy Pigford – alongside 400 other African American farmers – sued the United States Department of Agriculture for racial discrimination in USDA financial lending practices. In what became the largest class action lawsuit settlement in United States history, Pigford testified before Congress in the 1997 Pigford vs. Glickman trial; he recounted year upon year of repeated denials to his farm ownership loan applications, citing racism as the culprit. Another farmer who came forward was John Boyd, founder and president of the National Black Farmers Association. As Boyd explains in numerous public interviews, his USDA loan request for $5,000 was – literally – thrown into the trash in front of him; when he went back to re-file his paperwork, he watched a white farmer walk out of the USDA office with a $157,000 check.

While the plaintiffs of the Pigford vs. Glickman trial were eventually awarded settlements, there is still much work to be done in the Farm Bill – and policy in general – to cultivate a food system that is equitable and just. When it comes to farming, structural racism has disenfranchised black farmers and perpetuated an epidemic of land dispossession, facilitating a plummet of black representation in land ownership and agriculture. On the consumer side of the food system, structural racism manifests in food deserts, which are areas that lack access to healthy, affordable foods. Food deserts plague low-income neighborhoods, overwhelmingly affect communities of color, and underwrite the disproportionate levels of diabetes and obesity in black and brown communities. This is not a circumstance. Predatory targeting from dollar stores (which offer a selection of cheap canned and processed foods), as well as persistent supermarket and bank redlining , are just a few contributors to the development of low-income food deserts.

What can farmers’ markets do to help? While farmers’ markets aren’t a silver bullet answer to the deep-rooted social injustices in this country, they offer a framework worth replicating. In food deserts, farmers’ markets deliver healthy, affordable food to those who would have otherwise been limited in their options. Many farmers’ markets are able to accept CalFresh (SNAP) benefits, and are incentivizing EBT-spending at farmers’ markets through dollar-matching programs like Market Match. In addition, farmers’ markets provide low-barrier, low-risk, low-cost opportunities for new farmers and business owners to not only sell their product but to experiment with their product offerings and marketing campaigns.

Farmers’ markets are a practice of food sovereignty, which means that the citizens – the farmers and eaters – are decision makers in their own local food systems. Farmers sell produce that is culturally appropriate to themselves and their communities, and many farmers’ markets serve their communities by hosting cultural celebrations and events. By practicing food sovereignty, citizens are able to cultivate food environments based on their cultural and geographical needs, making the farmers’ market a truly inclusive place, and a place to amplify the voices of communities.

Today, on Juneteenth, we remember the day that federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to enforce the emancipation proclamation, and remember that we are on a journey together to diversify and make change for the future. We are fortunate to live in the most diverse state in the country, and that allows us to have an entirely original and beautiful community. Let’s celebrate and rejoice for the diversity we have at the farmers’ market and the unique experience it affords us.

PCFMA is proud to support Farms To Grow Inc. on their mission to promote the sustainability of Black farming and provide healthy food access to underserved communities. In honor of Juneteenth, we invite you to join us in supporting Farms To Grow Inc. and their Farm Development program by donating at the link below ✨

Daydreaming of escaping today’s heat under the shade of one of these beautiful apricot trees! ☀️ Last month, we had the pleasure of visiting Tony & Joye Inzana on their 160 acre orchard property at Inzana Ranch & Produce, where we learned all about apricots! These sweet stone fruits will only be available at the markets until mid-August most likely, so enjoy them while you can 🍑
When browsing your farmers’ market for the perfect apricots, look out for that rich, orange color and soft feel. Allow them to ripen on your countertop at home, this will let the fruit soften to the ideal texture and fill your kitchen with their sweet, subtle fragrance ✨

You can find organic stone fruit from Inzana Ranch & Produce on Saturday’s at our College of San Mateo and Pleasanton farmers’ markets!

Your PCFMA Farmers’ Market and Coronavirus | PCFMA

Hello, neighbors! With the state reopening, masks are no longer required to shop at PCFMA farmers' markets. We want to thank our wonderful customers and vendors for your patience and cooperation over the past several months. If you are not vaccinated, we encourage you to please wear a mask to help protect yourself. Some farmers and vendors may still ask you to wear a mask at their booth. Please carry a mask with you and respect their requests by masking up before making a purchase from those vendors. We appreciate your ongoing support! Visit https://www.pcfma.org/pcfma-coronavirus for additional information.

With COVID case counts on the decline and the state of California in the process of reopening, we are modifying the safety guidelines that we have had in place at our farmers’ markets. This includes not asking vaccinated individuals to wear masks in the market. However, we still need your help to ...

PLEASE SHARE! Hey everyone! I haven't posted on here yet but I have an amazing thing to share with you all! As most of you may know, I am a student at @Hackbright Academy. As most of you don't know, I work farmer's markets on the weekends at Sunrise Nursery FM to help with expenses. When prompted to design a web app as my final project, I realized the lack of central information about farmers' markets on the internet. As a result, I created my own database of vendor & market information and implemented that db via a Flask web app! I will spare the technical details for sake of brevity but please feel to reach out with ANY & ALL questions (& even employment opportunities!). The app has a few key features: *Search for Markets/Vendors by name, location, commodity *Weather for every market *Dynamic Google Maps to display relevant info *User ability to favorite markets & vendors * AND MUCH MORE!!!! Please go check it out: https://www.bayareamarketfinder.com/ HUGE THANKS to all the vendors that made this possible by filling out my survey: *I am looking to continue adding to my database so please contact me on her or at [email protected] to be added or make any suggestions!* Sunrise Nursery FM Shelly's Farm Smit Farms Cipponeri Family Farms Foustman's Salami Great Valley Poultry Hall's Organic Farms of Coastal California Prather Ranch Meat Company Precious Puch Doggie Bakery That Garlic Stuff Urban Village Farmers' Market Association Pacific Coast Farmers' Market Association #hackbright #farmersmarketapp #farmersmarket #flaskapp #javascript #html5 #python #softwareengineer #finalcodingproject #postgresql #sqlalchemy #jquery #ajax
