Eagle Scout Bob Barker from Troop 231, Eagle Class of 1955 had a vision of honoring his Scoutmaster James Cooper. Bob bought the vacant lot in front of his home, took the necessary permits and made the improvements to have a vegetable garden. Improvements include grading, fencing, and installing irrigation. Members of Cub Scout Pack, Scouts BSA Troop, and Venturing Crew 317 took turns helping Bob prep the garden and plant the first seeds. In its first harvest (so far), almost 500 pounds of vegetables from the garden had been donated to Loaves and Fishes. Bob welcomes Scouts to earn the Gardening merit badge or units to earn service hours by working on the garden.

The dedication ceremony was attended by Bob and his family and friends, Martinez Mayor Rob Shroeder, Muir District Commissioner Stuart Mahler, members from Pack 317 and 420, and Scouts BSA Troop 239 and 429.

Units interested in participating in the garden project can contact bob directly at [email protected].

The 2nd Annual Western Region Area 3 Venturing Officer's Association Recognition Banquet was a great success. During his term as Area 3 VOA President, Patrick doubled the number of active VOA's from 4 to 8 (there are 12 Councils in Area 3). Patrick also instituted a new policy that now allows the Area 3 VOA to increase its support staff, providing more opportunities for Venturing youth participants to take an active role in an Area level position. Area 3 was also the first to complete the submission of its JTE reports for the Western Region which comprises of 13 states and several countries in Asia. Finally, Patrick was able to increase the attendance of the Area 3 VOA Banquet where Council VOA Presidents and Summit Awardees were recognized, and Area Venturing Leadership Awards were presented. Patrick was also presented with a special gift by his Area VOA adult Advisors for his exemplary efforts.

Last year, Eagle Scout Robert "Bob" Barker (class of 1955) came to me with an idea. Bob wanted to honor his former Scoutmaster, a World War 2 veteran, by giving back to the community and our organization. Bob's vision is to plant and donate vegetables planted and grown by local Scouts. Bob bought and converted a vacant lot across from his home and converted it into a vegetable garden. Families from Pack, Troop , and Crew 317 removed the weeds, and planted various vegetables for this season's crop.
