PEU, Local #1/afscme Council 57

PEU, Local #1/afscme Council 57 This union exists to elevate public service by improving the wages, hours, working conditions, and general welfare of civil service workers.

Public employees provide essential and indispensable services that are the underpinning of civic and community life. This covenant requires an environment where workers are valued. We recognize that workers who are secure have the freedom to uplift each other, feel enfranchised to engage and advance the essential causes in their communities, and in turn, can engender the restoration of a true middle class.

Our Response to the Mass Shooting at VTA

Our thoughts and prayers to the families of the victims.

We are all deeply saddened by the mass shooting that took place today at a Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) facility in San Jose. The VTA is a public agency staffed by essential workers, where many union members work, including those from our own AFSCME family. It is a tragedy any time violence h...

Every community across the country needs lifesaving COVID-19 vaccines. They also need people to administer the vaccine, organize the rollout and keep the vaccine sites clean and safe. Behind every shot is a team of dedicated front-line public service workers. They are the key to effectively delivering the COVID-19 vaccine, but they can only do their jobs if Congress passes robust, direct aid to states, cities, towns and states.
Demand Congress fund the front lines: 1-888-981-9704.

The state of America today, further shattered by George Floyd’s murder, breaks every patriotic heart. The raw outrage we see in the streets comes as a pandemic has needlessly killed more than 100,000 of our loved ones and more than 40 million Americans are out of work, afraid they won’t be able to provide at the dinner table let alone pay next month’s rent or mortgage.

Bipartisan agreement doesn’t happen very often in our country these days. But as the coronavirus pandemic drags on and the economic devastation in our country grows ever clearer, conservative experts and liberal politicians alike agree that Congress must do more to help states, cities and towns. Without such help, communities across America will go without essential public services.

Impossible Choices

Of course you want trash piling up on the streets. Surely you want your kids to go to a school with no teachers. Bet you want no one to pick up when you call 911. These things could happen if states and localities are forced to cut public services because Congress won’t help them fix gaping holes in their budgets – holes blown open by the coronavirus pandemic. Congress must #FundTheFrontLines.

Closing schools, cutting mass transit and shuttering hospitals. If Congress doesn’t help states and localities, they might be forced to do all that and more.

Tell Congress: Fund the Front Lines NOW

A message from Charles Allen, Executive Director of AFSCME Council 57:

Unfortunately, there is still no news to date to report on when the next governmental aid package will be forthcoming. However, I do have a couple of ACTIONS that you can help with:

Congress needs to hear that we support public service workers by funding the front lines by sending emergency aid directly to the states.

Please go to the following link if you haven’t yet and complete asap: https://actionnetwork.org/…/tell-congress-fund-the-front-li…

Congress also needs to ensure that during this unprecedented time, the work of the US Postal Service is not threatened. The loss of the USPS would shatter our response to the pandemic. Yet the shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic is plummeting postal revenues while increasing costs. Worryingly, reports indicate that the USPS could run out of money as early as June.

Please act and Tell Congress: Support our public Postal Service.

If Congress doesn’t act fast, a terrible crisis will become even worse. Demand that Congress fund the front lines so that we can keep America running and Americans alive during this pandemic. We're doing our part, but we need Congress to do theirs.

Congratulations to City of Berkeley Local One Leader Monique Frost on her Retirement!

Local One sends all good wishes to Monique. She’s been on the front lines as Berkeley’s Communications Center Manager for several years and has shown a great spirit of caring, along with high performance in her critical public safety role. Monique has also served her Union colleagues as Local One Mid Management Unit VP and as a Negotiator. She will be missed, but she leaves a lasting legacy of labor and public service advocacy.
