Can a landlord refuse to allow a service dog in housing, or charge a fee to do so?

The Fair Housing Act protects the rights of persons with disabilities to live with their qualified service dog. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development website states that “housing providers cannot refuse to make reasonable accommodations in rules, policies, practices, or services when such accommodations may be necessary to afford a person with a disability the equal opportunity to use and enjoy a dwelling.”

Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) can cause severe problems including coma and death, and hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) can contribute to long-term diabetes complications.

Our dogs give their diabetic partner early warning, allowing them to verify their blood glucose levels and treat themselves as advised by their physician.

I've grown a backbone, I did it for Brave, Haley & Brave

“It's been absolutely life changing to have a four-legged friend with me everywhere I go,” Haley said. “Brave is so talented, and very persistent. If I'm not responding to her alerts, she has no problem going up to anyone else who might be around and letting them know something’s wrong. When I first saw her alerting on other people, I thought she needed to be redirected, but my boyfriend said no, I think she's trying to alert me about you! A few times when that happened, it turned out I had very low blood sugar.”

Haley Gibb was a college student finishing up her final exams for the fall semester of her senior year when life hit her with a road block. “I had a severe inflammatory response with strep and an ear infection, a high fever, and a loss of 20 pounds in a week,” she said. “I was back east in Pen...

To close out #InternationalAssistanceDogWeek, we wanted to share a little #WhyADI note:

Both #EarlyAlertCanines and Canine Companions are accredited by ADI - Assistance Dogs International, which means everywhere we go and take our dogs, we take them with confidence. We know they’ve been trained to meet international standards, and we know our dogs will continue to be held to ADI’s high standards. Each year we meet with the orgs that placed our dogs to re-certify them and ensure they’re still meeting or exceeding standards. We know we can count on EAC and CC for ongoing training and support to make sure our dogs always do their jobs and behave perfectly in public, because that is part of their ADI accreditation! Thank you to EAC and CC for maintaining your ADI accreditation, and thank you to ADI for creating standards for assistance dogs organizations.

If you’re looking for a service dog and don’t want to pay an arm and a leg, be sure to check out ADI’s website! They have an accredited member search that allows you to filter by location and type of service. Check out their site or feel free to reach out if you want more info!
