Oppose Exposing Kids to Cannabis Billboards & Advertising on California Highways

If you are concerned about cannabis advertising in our community, here is a way to take action.

Read, sign and share this letter to policy makers today regarding Assembly Bill No. 1302 Commercial cannabis billboards: placement restrictions.

https://ujoin.co/campaigns/1433/actions/public?action_id=1502

AB-1302 would render Prop 64’s PROMISED protections against exposing children to cannabis marketing ineffective by allowing cannabis licensees to advertise on highway billboards or similar devices as long as it is placed further than 15-miles from the CA border. Protect our kids, oppose AB-1302.

As 2020 Closes, Many Questions Remain about Youth Substance Use Trends | National Institute on Drug Abuse

The results of the 2020 Monitoring the Future (MTF) survey of drug use and attitudes in middle and high school students were released today, with the encouraging news that the alarming rises in teen vaping both of nicotine and marijuana seen in prior years had leveled off, although use remained high. But as with so many other efforts in 2020, the MTF survey was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. And we are left at the end of this tumultuous year with many questions about how circumstances have affected youth, their substance use, and their mental health more generally.

Holiday Highs and Lows - DrugAbuse.com

For many Americans, the end of the year brings images of happy families gathered around a Christmas tree, big dinners of turkey and stuffing, holiday music, and cozy fires. For others, the holidays can be a much darker and more difficult time – a time of family conflict, financial strain, loneliness, grief, and seasonal affective disorder.

The crisis fueled by the powerful painkiller fentanyl could have been far worse if it wasn't for the nearly 3,000 times Narcan was used from January to the beginning of November to save someone from the brink of death, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Saturday.

A record 621 people died of drug overdoses in San Francisco so far this year, a staggering number that far outpaces the 173 deaths from COVID-19 the city has seen thus far. Study: Parents who give their teenagers alcohol are inviting trouble

The new study looked both at parents who gave their children occasional sips of alcohol, versus those who provided full glasses of beer or wine – and found little difference. “Giving whole glasses is probably worse than giving sips, but giving sips does not protect and still causes harm,” said Mattick, a professor of Drug and Alcohol Studies at the University of New South Wales in Sydney.

It seems to make some sense: Let your teenagers drink at home where they will have adult supervision and won’t be driving.

A Tale of Two Zip Codes

When it comes to our health, our zip code matters more than our genetic code. For many communities in California and across the United States, easy access to healthy food options, parks for exercise, and good schools determines quality & length of life.

The California Endowment’s 10-year Building Healthy Communities initiative seeks to bring equity to all neighborhoods so that all Californians can enjoy the benefits of healthy communities to live long and prosper. It’s time to change the odds for everyone.

Breathing problems in teens: COVID-19 or lung injury due to vaping?

With the COVID-19 pandemic, it is easy to miss EVALI diagnosis. The patients in the case series showed up with fever, nausea and cough. They had fast heart rate, rapid breathing and low oxygen levels in their blood. Their laboratory results pointed to inflammation commonly seen in COVID-19, with higher white blood cells (WBC) count and elevated inflammation. Their chest imaging revealed non-specific ground glass opacities. While everything indicated COVID-19 infection, their SARS-CoV-2 testing returned negative.

Lung injury due to e-cigarette use (EVALI) and COVID-19 share many symptoms. Providers need to get the vaping history of teenagers with unexplained breathing problems.
