Koinonia of Columbia, Inc

Koinonia of Columbia, Inc Koinonia of Columbia is a movement of people who seek to be a racially reconciling, healing Presence in the Eau Claire community, anchored in Christ.

“Koinonia of Columbia” Vision Statement Koinonia, in partnership with Eau Claire Baptist Church, envisions a networking of compassionate people connected through our foundational beliefs that all people are created in the image of God and that we are called to live and work toward the common good for all. Inspired by Old Testament prophecy and the promise of continuing New Testament fulfillment, this community of believers longs for God’s kingdom to come on earth in the community of Eau Claire, as it is in heaven through prayer and partnerships. _____________________________________________________________ Well-being for our children through safe and healthy communities: In the words of Zechariah, “This is what the Lord Almighty says, ‘Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the alien or the poor. In your hearts, do not think evil of each other…I will return to Zion and dwell in Jerusalem … Once again men and women of ripe old age will sit in the streets of Jerusalem each with cane in his hand because of his age. The city streets will be filled with boys and girls playing there.’”(7:9-10, 8:4) Equal access for all to all resources: In the words of Ezekiel, “Wherever the river goes, every living creature that swarms will live… It will become fresh and everything will live where the river goes…On the banks, on both sides of the river, there will grow all kinds of trees for food. Their leaves will not wither nor their fruit fail, but they will bear fresh fruit every month, because the water for them flows from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food and their leaves for healing.” (47:9, 12) Economic empowerment: In the words of Amos, “The time is surely coming, says the Lord, when the one who plows shall overtake the one who reaps, and the treader of grapes the one who sows the seed; the mountains shall drip sweet wine, and all the hills shall flow with it. I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel, and they shall rebuild the ruined cities and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and drink their wine, and they shall make gardens and eat their fruit. I will plant them upon their land, and they shall never again be plucked up out of the land that I have given them, says the Lord your God.” (9:13-15) “Koinonia of Columbia” Mission Statement Koinonia is a movement of people who seek to be a racially reconciling, healing Presence in the Eau Claire community. Anchored in our steadfast dependence on God and one another and through the faithful stewardship of Eau Claire Baptist Church, we aspire to: • foster safe environments for children to learn, grow and reach their potential. • encourage all individuals to know and celebrate their God-given skills and talents, operating according to the asset-based model. • promote local economic activity based on community needs. • develop quality, affordable housing with paths toward home ownership. • facilitate experiences of community (“koinonia”) at a level in which it is indistinguishable as to who is giving and who is receiving.

What a JOY it is to work together to love our neighbors! So many THANKS to Northside Baptist Church - Lexington-and Diana Z. Moore for the gift of 100 Thanksgiving baskets that Koinonia, ECBC and Hyatt Park Elementary School shared with our Eau Claire neighbors! No better way to say “Happy Thanksgiving!”

A special thank you, too, to the great team at Hyatt Park Elementary, Providence Home-Columbia and Eau Claire Baptist Church who facilitated all the deliveries on Saturday... and especially Jimmy Braddock and his family who transported over half of the baskets from Lexington to Eau Claire on his truck/trailer!
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

2019-2020 School Year... We Are Ready!! The Koinonia Back to School Bash was soooo much fun! From the huge waterslide to the yummy cookout to the personalized backpacks filled with school supplies to free haircuts, there wasn’t a dull moment! 😅😅😅

I cannot begin to express how GRATEFUL Koinonia is for the 55 backpacks donated by 4 churches for our children!!! A VERY SPECIAL THANKS to Sarah Tison and Rev. Beth McConnell and Kathwood Baptist Church for coordinating this compassionate effort.❤️
There were so many smiles last night!

Early in the summer, we asked all of our Koinonia Kids to tell us their favorite color and character for a backpack. Then, Sarah and Beth took this list and invited Kathwood and 3 other CBF churches to participate.

Many, many thanks to Rev. Judith Myers and
Emmanuel Baptist Fellowship, New Hope Christian Fellowship and Greenlawn Baptist Church for their very generous participation! We were so happy to hear about the “blessing of the backpacks” at Emmanuel this past Sunday.

And I have more thank yous😁To Mr. Rickey Robinson who sponsored our free haircuts.... all 14! To my precious husband Dave who coordinated the huge grilling adventure... Dave, JayWill Wilson and Jack grilled 120 hamburgers and 150 hotdogs!! To all the wonderful volunteers who came to manage this event yesterday. A special thanks to Jazmen Thompson who helped out ALL week!
To all the Koinonia Families who made the fellowship so sweet... thank you, everyone!

It’s always hard to believe how quickly the Koinonia Summer comes and goes...We just ended our final week yesterday. Week 6 was highlighted by 4 very special visits. First, Angela Fields continued her visits with the children on Monday as she shared her powerful book “Finish the Race.”

Eric “Freeze” Cameron from #TeamJesus joined us also on Monday to share his story and music with the children, even a brand new song that he is about to record! Eric, we are excited about the Koinonia rap song you want to write with the kids next summer!

Travis Diaz and Matt joined us on Wednesday to share an inspirational message and more Christian rap music. The kids were SO focused and engaged as they listened to these young men whose stories were so authentic and relevant. So many thank yous, Eric, Travis and Matt!

Then, on Thursday, Columbia Police Department’s K-9 Unit visited the camp. Thank you, Officer Walls for making this special request for us. I don’t think we’ve ever seen all 45 kids so quiet at the same time as they watched these police dogs at work! 😂

What a summer! We would love for you to join us for our Koinonia Celebration service tomorrow (July 28) at 11am at Eau Claire Baptist Church. The children are so excited! Your heart will be moved and filled to overflowing! ❤️

Koinonia Week 5: “We are Always Dreaming!”
What a fun theme this was! From Bible to reading to writing and art, we explored what it means to dream. We enjoyed visits from lots of friends! Angela Fields wins the award for traveling the longest distance! 😊All the way from New Jersey! Thank you, Angela, for sharing your dream come true with us and teaching Koininia Kids to never give up and to “Finish the Race”!

Thank you, too, Officer Walls and Officer Roop for visiting us at just the right times this week! The kids have LOVED eating lunch and playing basketball and card games with you! Serve & Connect Columbia Police Department, SC

Thank you, Dr. Brabham (Hyatt Park Elem) for stopping by, too!

Ms. Zina’s son, Zachary Diaz taught art one day this week and the kids were so excited to meet a “real artist”! And thanks to Candace Chamberlain, PRISMA social worker, who taught lessons on resilience this week.
Koinonia is stronger because of our partners!

We also enjoyed making more items for our Bethlehem Market on December 7... painted rocks and jewelry this week!

It’s hard for us to believe that this is our last week ahead. We hope you’ll plan to join us for our Koinonia Celebration service on Sunday, July 28 at 11am in ECBC sanctuary. 4427 Main Street.

We NEVER GIVE UP... We are KOINONIA! This was Week 4’s theme. This week was FULL!! From Koinonia days to VBS evenings! 20-25 Koinonia Kids participated in ECBC’s VBS in the evenings this past week. A special thanks to Richard Moore who oversaw both day camp and VBS!

At Koinonia, the kids had fun exploring the theme through the Noah’s Ark story and special rainbow crafts in Bible to journaling in writing and stories in reading.

Crafts were SUPER fun this week as we began to prepare for the Koinonia Kids’ Bethlehem Market on December 7! Take a look at the Christmas ornaments and coasters they decorated for the market this week. More info on the asset-based craft market soon! Other fun crafts this week were slime and bead bracelets.

The week was also full of VERY special visits from Officer Walls, Jennifer Crouse, Lane Riley and Mindy, Jon and Maggie Jamison. Officer Walls joined us for lunch and a basketball game. Jennifer Crouse is a dear Koinonia volunteer who talked with the kids about her 10-year professional basketball career overseas! Lane Riley is the Missions Coordinator for CBFSC who was in her element at Koinonia! And the Jamison Family is a missionary family who did asset-based community development work for 20 years in Iowa!

The week was also marked by other special volunteer moments with the kids! Many thanks to Rita Dickerson for coordinating the Christmas ornaments and Belinda Guerrero for your incredible work in the Koinonia Library. We learn more and more each week about how it really does take all of us so THANK YOU to EACH of you if you pray, donate money or materials, volunteer, etc!

😇God is at work among us!😇

Week 3! The “I” in Koinonia... We are Individuals! From Bible to reading to writing, art and character education, we talked about what it means to be a unique individual... designed and created by God with special gifts and abilities! We enjoyed visits from Officer Walls from Columbia PD and Ms Jane from Sonoco to teach about earth care. One group enjoyed a visit to the garden and a special delivery of veggies
to Dr. Brabham and Mrs. Penny at Hyatt Park Elementary and another group had a blast at Riverbanks Zoo! We celebrate our new volunteers this week... each one makes us even better! Relationships are the key! Camp won’t be in session next week but we’ll resume July 8!

06/27/2019

Officer Walls is with the Community Response Team for Columbia PD in the North Region. He is specifically working to build relationships in the area. Many of the kids already knew him! Look at this great way to build relationships ... a push-up contest! 😂

Love this song that Kayla Eboni Washington is teaching Koinonia Kids this summer by India Arie called There is Hope!
Here are the lyrics they’re practicing in the video below:
There's hope
It doesn't cost a thing to smile
You don't have to pay to laugh
You better thank God for that
There's hope
It doesn't cost a thing to smile
You don't have to pay to laugh
You better thank God for that
There's hope
Off in the back country of Brazil
A met a young brother that made me feel
That I could accomplish anything
(You see, just like me, he wanted to sing)
(He had) no windows and no doors
He lived a simple life and was extremely poor
On top of all of that, he had no eyesight
(But that didn't keep him from seein' the light)

We are KIND! This was the theme of Week 1 of the Koinonia Summer Enrichment Program. It was a week of learning each other’s names, our group names (names of God!), schedules, routines, our new 3rd floor home... and all about what it means to be KIND from our reading and writing lessons to our Bible, art and character education classes to our delicious home cooked meals and visit to the garden! Many thanks to Richard Moore for his leadership in this adventure and the wonderful students, parents, staff, volunteers and donors without whom there would be no Koinonia!
