Polio Cases Surge in Pakistan and Afghanistan

Last year’s hotly contested national elections temporarily threw the program off track as local officials were replaced, said Aziz Memon, head of Rotary International’s polio campaign in Pakistan. Cases have typically spiked during elections and moments of political turmoil.

The virus is threatening to spread to other countries. In May, a sewage sample in a bordering province in Iran tested positive for the strain of virus circulating in Pakistan; Iran had its last case of polio paralysis in 2001. #EndPolioNow

False rumors that children are fainting or dying have led parents to turn away vaccinators, threatening the campaign to eradicate the disease.

What a great project! Well done!

A group of Farragut Rotarians volunteered tonight at Laundry Love. Laundry Love provides free laundry service for people in Knoxville who might not have the ability to pay to wash and clean their clothing and bedding on their own. They come to Bluewater Laundromat on North Broadway in Knoxville the third Thursday of each month to have a meal and get their laundry done by a group of volunteers. Tonight the Farragut Rotary Club sponsored the event by providing funds and Rotarian volunteers. Here are some photos of our hard working Rotary members.

Dr. Sarah John of our club has spent the last 6 years supporting the rebuilding of Chantal, Haiti, after the earthquake of 2010. Her efforts have been supported by our Rotary Club and nearly 20 other Rotary Clubs in Virginia. The need for disaster relief is CRITICAL!

Sarah is traveling to Haiti on Sunday, Oct. 16th to survey the damage and to bring what she can with her to help in the recovery effort. Please consider a donation in any amount and share with your network. Time is critical in providing shelter, food, clean water and beating back the threat of a cholera outbreak.

Please help! The need is critical and urgent! Donate immediately to provide medicine against cholera and typhoid and to rebuild homes for thousands of families left homeless by the storm which blew away their roofs and gutted the insides! THE NEED: Our beautiful village is gone, blown away by...

Hurricane Matthew Leaves Hundreds Dead In Haiti; Homes and Crops Are Devastated

We are praying for all of those in the village of Chantal and all across the rest of Haiti. We don't know the extent of the damage to the dispensary, to the kitchen that was under construction, or if there is anything left of the solar arrays at all. This is YEARS of investment by so many local Rotary Clubs here in Virginia to support our mission in Haiti. We will post more information as we receive it.

Officials and aid workers are now able to make their way into parts of the country that were slammed by the storm. They're finding buildings smashed and mud lining the streets.
