In our third installment of our Feature a Vet Friday series, we bring to you one of our senior most Veteran apprentices, Brian.

Brian celebrated two years in our program this April. An Army veteran, he served over 14 years rounding out his time with the National Guard in PA. Having enlisted a year before 9/11, he experienced the uptick in tempo after 9/11 and was quickly deployed to Iraq thereafter.

Brian is our resident history buff; a former Civil War re-enactor, he'll go toe to toe with anyone about all things American history. He's a huge animal lover and a self-proclaimed DIY aficionado.

A recent trip to Waco's famed "Fixer Upper" Magnolia Market renewed Brian's love of building and being with Veterans Next Mission. Brian tells us, "...the program is well worth it. That's why I'm sticking with it and do hope to be a VNM Apprentice Trainer when I finish. I'll stay at VNM as long as Bob will have me."

We appreciate having you, Brian, always with a smile or joke, he brings positive energy to the group. We just need to keep Brian off the roof to keep Brian here! 🙂 Congratulations on your two year anniversary!

Anniversary of the Army Chaplain Corps

Today we celebratie the oldest branch of the U.S. Military.

"The United States Army Chaplain Corps is a unique part of American military tradition. Said to be among the smallest (if not THE smallest) unit in the U.S. Army, the Chaplain Corps predates Independence Day and since this unit began, chaplains have served in every American conflict."

For Feature a Vet Friday, we would love to introduce, once again, our faithful and fearless leader, CEO and founder of Veterans Next Mission, Bob Luckett.

Bob retired after selling his building company of nearly 30 years. Encouraged and inspired by groups like Second Chances, a group that puts former prisoners back to work in the construction industry, Bob felt there was a likewise need to do the same for military veterans transitioning from active duty into civilian life.

In 2016, he launched Veterans Next Mission, and with nearly three years into the game, we are halfway to graduating some of our founding veteran trainees in our four year long program.

So that’s what we know...here’s what we didn’t know...

Bob LOVES baseball, and until his late 50s, Bob served as pitcher on both baseball and softball teams in his community. After a serious injury to the hip, on his third homer rounding third base, Bob decided he needed to put the bat down for the sake and sanity of his wife, Kelley, and family!

Bob also serves as pastor to a senior living community, and once a month gives a sermon - a beloved treasure to a most deserving group!

And once upon a time, Bob was host of his own radio show. Jack of all trades, Bob is most loved by his veteran trainee crews, and well, all of us! He’s an all-heart boss who leads us with great courage, enthusiasm, and a fighting spirit that keeps our little nonprofit chugging along each day! Three cheers for our very own ‘Bob the Builder!’

Feature a Vet Friday! We are proud of our veteran trainee team here at VNM, and we would like to begin introducing some of our veterans to you - our friends and supporters!

Meet Joe. Recently, we asked Joe to give us a few fun facts about him, and mostly, we needed more nitty gritty material about him because Joe loves to joke around :)

Joe served as US Marine from 2011 - 2015 in Infantry 0311. Born Russian, he was adopted and brought to the US as a toddler and has been raised here in Virginia his entire life. Joe plays competitive rugby on a local mens' team and on the weekends, he is a drummer in a heavy metal band! (Seriously, we had no idea!)

Self-proclaimed but definitely self-aware, Joe is the fastest eater you'll ever meet and puts everyone to shame at the pizza buffet. He'll tell you how much he LOVES working in the construction field, but he'll also tell you how much he LOVES working for Bob! He aspires to become a business owner in the industry, and he believes strongly with VNM, he's preparing to do just that. Thanks, Joe, for letting us 'dig' into you a bit, and as always, for being on the VNM team! We are proud to have you and your sense of humor!

Met Michael Herbert at the Home Show today. Fantastic Group, Looking forward to chatting more.Linkshttps://www.facebook.com/vetbuilder/Facebook
In 2014, I wrote an article for Stars and Stripes about Welcome Home Montrose, a grassroots project in western Colorado to support vets. I had so much in my notebook about this effort that I wrote “Home of the Brave”. It will be released Jan. 26. I recount how Melanie Kline, a Montrose, Colorado jeweler who has no military experience or ties, started the project after watching a 2011 CBS Sunday Morning segment on wounded vets learning to kayak. In just a few years, Kline’s project, recently renamed the Welcome Home Alliance for Veterans, attracted the support of others in the town of 20,000. Welcome Home hosts a biannual outdoors festival that brings vets from across the country to hunt, fish and kayak. It helped the town and surrounding county develop a white water river park they hope will boost local tourism. It organized internships that offered young wounded vets a chance to consider what they would do with the rest of their lives now that they were no longer fit to fight. At its volunteer-run drop-in center, vets can get a cup of coffee along with counseling and advice on jobs and training. Kline built a partnership between civilians and veterans that has energized an entire town and could be a model for other communities. I'm bolstered the reporting I had begun for Stars and Stripes in 2012 with more visits to Montrose for interviews. I also talked with mental health experts, policy makers and veterans advocates around the country for more insight into what it means for a small town to take on a complex challenge. I hope you'll read my book. It's av available for pre-order now on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1785356364 And you can learn more about the Welcome Home Alliance for Veterans here: http://www.whafv.org/
