Our first nutrition classes of the year have begun in partnership with Virginia Cooperative Extension and Fairfax County Government. This photo is from the Thursday afternoon class for Spanish-speakers. We hope they enjoy the class and learn as much as the participants from the last session who provided these comments:

"I am satisfied with all the benefits that this program offered to me. This program changed my daily routine because before I fed my family in the wrong way, but after this, I learned how to do it correctly. For example: how to cook, how to buy, and how to live better."

"I am thankful for this program. I learned how to eat healthy. It was a wonderful experience."

"I am so thankful for this class. I am grateful for my teacher and for everything that I learned. This class was important for my kids."

"I want to say thank you for these classes. They were very helpful, and I learned to eat healthy and how to improve my health in general. Blessings."

"My father has Parkinson and this class helped me a lot to have him stable with his sugar level and relieved his constipation."

Thank you Wegmans Chantilly for choosing WFCM as the recipient of funds from your 2019 year-end “Check Out Hunger”. Through the amazing generosity of our community who rounded up or made other donations while shopping, we received over $40,000 to support the operations of WFCM!

And, to further help with the issue of food insecurity in our community, Wegmans will now be increasing their weekly donations of food to include perishable items such as dairy and eggs!

We appreciate all that store manager, Brien MacKendrick, and service manager Chris Holland do to support this community and WFCM!

We are glad to be part of this partnership with Britepaths, Ox Hill Baptist Church and Fairfax County Government Department of Neighborhood Services to provide financial counseling to clients of WFCM and other community members. WFCM requires financial counseling for all clients who receive financial assistance and Britepaths' volunteers are on-site at WFCM several times a month in addition to these on-on-one sessions at Ox Hill Baptist Church.

We are also grateful to our Client Services Specialist, Lillian Diaz, who performs translation services at the Financial Counseling Clinic each month!

"Now I have resources to improve my income by using my skills. Thanks!" -- Financial Counseling Clinic participant

Our first free Financial Counseling Clinic of the year with Western Fairfax Christian Ministries in Chantilly on Monday was a hit! Thanks to our awesome volunteers who came out to help community members get a handle on their finances. All of the participants said they would recommend it to a friend.

We are grateful to our Chantilly partners, WFCM, Ox Hill Baptist Church and Fairfax County Government Neighborhood and Community Services. And a huge thank you to Foundation for Financial Planning for providing a grant for another year to make the Chantilly and United Community - formerly UCM of Alexandria Clinics possible, as well as our Financial Mentoring and Coaching programs at Britepaths and Financial Empowerment Center at South County.

In the photos: 1. Volunteer Marty Corso provides counseling to a client; 2. Our dynamic duo who have been welcoming clients and helping them get ready for their Counseling session at the last three clinics, Garreth Bartholomew and Wayne Morris; 3. Volunteer Josephine Johnson (left) provides counseling and WFCM's Lillian Diaz (center) translates.

It’s a great day in our client choice food pantry when deliveries from Sprouts Farmers Market in Herndon include delicious and fresh fruit and vegetables like this. Our 25 families who had appointments today went home with milk, eggs, fruit, and vegetables along with the rest of their food and toiletries. Partnerships with local grocery stores are helping to solve the issue of food insecurity for our clients.

Will you be near the Giant Food store on #StoneRoad in Centreville, Virginia between today and tomorrow, 1/31? If so, pop into the store and when you check out, consider buying one of the #Purple #CommunityBags. You'll not only be saving the environment by using a recyclable bag, but $1 of every bag sold suppports WFCM's efforts. This is part of Giant's #Bags4ACause program which helps numerous different nonprofits throughout the county, depending on which store you visit. Tomorrow is the last day to support WFCM. Thanks to Store Manager, Randy Delancey, for choosing WFCM every other month for the past few months.

We are so happy to partner with Cake4Kids who provides birthday cakes for children of our clients at no charge. This is a wonderful volunteer organization and we are so thankful for each cake we receive. Today a special soccer birthday cake was delivered and our client photographed (center) with Director of Operations Pamela Montesinos and Client Services Specialist Lillian Diaz. Our client was so excited to bring this beautiful cake home to her child.

Today and tomorrow are teacher workday/staff development days for Fairfax County Public Schools. For many this means family vacations or fun activities, but for those living with food insecurity this means two days without free breakfast and lunch. To help students in need of meals, WFCM staff and volunteers made 200 ‘School’s Out food kits’ during the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service last week. These kits included breakfast, lunch and snacks for two days with items such as milk, orange juice, peanut butter, cereal, and fruit cups. On Friday Westfield High School (Virginia) assistant vice principal Kyle Laspe and other caring school leaders distributed the bags to students in need. We are thankful to partner with WHS and the community to provide this support.
