Stuff the Bus May 2020

Please help us “stuff the bus” this Saturday!

Fight Hunger, Feed Hope: “Stuff the Bus” Food Drive

For nine years, the Stuff the Bus food drive has served as a biannual effort to fill the shelves of local nonprofits’ food pantries. Because of the extraordinary events taking place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for food has surged so Stuff the Bus is again stepping up to feed hungry people in Fairfax County.

On Saturday, May 16 and Tuesday, May 19, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fastran buses will be parked in 21 locations throughout Fairfax County to collect food donations. However, unlike past years, the buses will not be parked in grocery store parking lots. Instead, buses will be parked in less-frequented lots, including all Board of Supervisors’ offices and the Fairfax County Government Center, to allow donors to comply with social distancing recommendations. For more information visit the Stuff the Bus webpage. https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/neighborhood-community-services/stuff-the-bus

During this pandemic the volunteers have been picking up and delivering food to these clients so that they can stay safe at home. Many thanks to Shepherd’s Center, Executive Director Travis White, all the volunteers, and Program provider NV Rides!

Thank you Community Foundation for Northern Virginia for the $25,000 COVID 19 grant. WFCM used 100% of the funds to provide rent/utility assistance to families in need! We were able to provide 47 families, consisting of 166 individuals, with an average of $532. In some cases we were also able to assist with NOVEC bills using our NOVEC grant and in all cases we offered food assistance. Together, we can meet the needs of our community!

05/05/2020

Everyone is talking about the “new normal,” that the way we communicate, do business, socialize and the list goes on will be very different when we have finally “flattened the pandemic curve.” This is all well and good for those of us who, thankfully, still have our jobs, our pensions, our retirement plans, and families who can care for us should the need arise. But, those who come to WFCM, don't have those safety nets and they truly NEED us. As the “world gets back together” and the healing begins, let’s not forget the hundreds of families who came to us in March and April, trying to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. Those living paycheck to paycheck who had to live on no check, but for all of you who ensured they could receive financial assistance and food through WFCM.

This is our final #GivingTuesdayNow message. Please consider a donation to help us reach our goal of $6,000 for the 24 hour period of May 5. $6,000 will help WFCM pay a portion of rent for 10 families. And every $600 can provide one more family with rent assistance. Just think what we can do together to help families in need in May and June. We're already at $3,900 thanks to 18 donors. That's pretty terrific. $2,100 to go...

Should this be something that moves you, please visit us at wfcmva.org and click on the DONATE button on the top left. Every gift donated on line today will help us offer financial support and a whole lot of comfort to those community members at risk of hunger and despair. WFCM is so much more than a Client Choice Food Pantry; it truly is a lifeline to a better life for those suffering. #Thankyou. (and yes, please share, share, share this until you hit the sack tonight!)

Making face coverings (masks), compiling cleaning care kits, sourcing large quantities of food from major distributors, curbside pickups, virtual get togethers, “You’re Doing Great” cards – so many acts of kindness, creativity, and selflessness have helped make the world, and our community, a better place these past weeks despite the crisis we are all living through.

Today, #GivingTuesdayNow brings to mind that together we can really accomplish so much. What might you be doing to bring a smile or tear of joy to someone today?

Whatever little extra you do, please share it on social media and tag Western Fairfax Christian Ministries. We’re all in this together, we’ve been #AloneTogether for many weeks, and we’re #StandingTogether now to help each other heal.

#Together we can do extraordinary things...especially on #GivingTuesdayNow.

Consider what happened to this local Centreville family. They experienced a double employment-related whammy due to the pandemic. The Dad’s work hours were reduced and the Mom’s work hours were totally eliminated. They have two children and called seeking assistance with rent and food. WFCM was able to pay part of their April rent and certify them to use the food pantry.

It’s our supporters – individuals, businesses, organizations – that help us provide for local families. Help us raise our goal of $6,000 today to help 10 more families in this situation.

Should this be something that moves you, please visit us at wfcmva.org and click on the DONATE button on the top left.

Every gift donated online today will help us offer financial support and a whole lot of comfort to other folks like this family.. Work for a company with a matching gift plan? Perhaps your donation can be matched. Mailing a check? Put "#GivingTuesdayNow" in the memo line. Thank you!

What are you doing today on #GivingTuesdayNow?

....Grocery shopping for a neighbor, mailing or delivering a surprise card to the front steps of someone who lives alone, paying it forward and purchasing a gift card from a small business that has been good to you in the past, delivering food to front line workers....

Whatever little extra you do, please share it on social media and tag Western Fairfax Christian Ministries. We’re all in this together, we’ve been #AloneTogether for many weeks, and we’re #StandingTogether now to help each other heal.

05/05/2020

Today is #GivingTuesdayNow - a global day of unity, standing together and giving. WFCM’s goal for the day is to raise enough funds to help ten families with a portion of their rent. That’s $6,000. Will you help us do that? And maybe more? Every $600 can help another family pay their rent.

Consider the difference you can make and did in April when a mentally disabled senior, who works two part time jobs, one at a restaurant, came to us for help. She has been a client of WFCM using the food pantry monthly. Due to the pandemic, her restaurant hours were eliminated and she was concerned about paying her rent. WFCM paid her April rent, assisted with food and connected her with a partner organization, the St. Vincent DePaul ministry at @St.Timonty's Catholic Church in Chantilly, who assisted with April utilities.

There are many more people in our community in this situation who experience lost wages, but since March, the increase has been incredible due to furloughs.

Should this be something that moves you, please visit us at wfcmva.org and click on the DONATE button on the top left.

Every gift donated today will help us offer financial support and a whole lot of comfort to other folks like this client. Work for a company with a matching gift plan? Perhaps your donation can be matched. If you are mailing a check put "#GivingTuesdayNow" in the memo line. Thank you!

Thank you for all of the donations and support throughout April! We received 41,000 pounds of food! And with the support of our partners such as Fairfax County Government, Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, and NOVEC this is what we were able to provide to support our neighbors in need: over 95,000 lbs. of food for 551 families, over $64,000 in rent and utility assistance to 120 families, and payment of 17 NOVEC bills! Together we will meet the needs!

#GivingTuesdayNow is a new global day of giving and unity as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by #COVID19. It is TOMORROW, May 5, 2020 and is in addition to the "regular" December #GivingTuesday.

The entire world has been coming together to stand up, help out, give back and heal. Whether that's through donations to community organizations, celebrating doctors and nurses at shift changes, or reaching out to a neighbor to help with groceries, generosity has been helping the entire world get through this global pandemic. #Together.

Help spread "kindness and generosity" and tell your friends, colleagues, family that you support us, why you support us and encourage them to do so by visiting our website at wfcmva.org and clicking the DONATE button on the top left. ALL gift amounts help, especially now as we are buying food for the pantry and expanding hours for our staff to meet the needs of the community.

Please share on social media and tag Western Fairfax Christian Ministries with what other things you and your family might be engaging in on #GivingTuesdayNow. #ThankYou!
