Flag Retirement Ceremony 2021

Thank you to everyone who came out to help us retire flags as part of this year's Flag Retirement Ceremony. A special thank you to North Metro Fire Rescue District, Broomfield Police Department, Bugles Across America and the Centennial State Brass Quintet for supporting our event. Also, thank you to the Girl Scouts from Troops #60555, #66802 and #62816 who led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We retired hundreds of flags and followed it up with a hot dog cookout. Many of the stars from the flags will be repurposed as part of the Stars For Heroes program--what a great way to extend the life and meaning of our flags to benefit soldiers, veterans and first responders.

Second, we are hosting a Flag Retirement Ceremony and Patriotic Cookout starting at 11:30. We love hearing stories like this. Veterans helping veterans. Thanks Westminster PD!

This past Saturday Jonathan was driving on HWY 36 in Westminster, when his tire went flat. Officers arrived believing this was an accident. When they talked with Jonathan he explained he had been on a life journey to drive to Vegas when he was unfortunately involved in an accident in Denver the day prior. Jonathan was now driving on a spare donut tire. When the spare went flat he pulled to the side of the road. Jonathan was out of money and just wanted to get back to his home in Ohio. Sergeant Terry Haase along with other Westminster Officers, who previously served in the Army and Marines, put a plan into action. They called a local towing company, Connollys Towing, and explained the situation. A tow truck driver named “Richard” arrived and towed Jonathans car free of charge to a local tire shop.

The officers paid the tire company out of their own pocket to replace Jonathans tire so he could finish his journey at home safely. The officers wanted to say thank you to Jonathan for serving his country. Jonathan served three tours in Vietnam and received the Purple Heart for his actions in combat. Below is a picture of Sergeant Terry Haase who is also a retired Gunnery Sergeant from the United States Marine Corps and Jonathan! We all hope Jonathan makes it home safely!

We invite you to join us for Coffee and Conversation this morning. Tom Duhs will give a special talk about the history of the renown 10th Mountain Division. He was commissioned in the United States Marine Corps in December 1977 and retired as Colonel of Marines on January 1, 2008. Of the 30 years of commissioned service, 10 of those years were spent doing the same type of work the men of the 10th Mountain Division did at Ft. Lewis and Camp Hale and in Italy. The talk begins at 10 a.m. Come early or stay after to enjoy some coffee, donuts and comradery with fellow veterans and history enthusiasts, and be sure to check out the new exhibits at the museum.

Have you ever held a "silver" penny?

During WWII, the US Mint began making pennies out of steel in order to conserve valuable metals like copper for the war effort.

This penny will be going into our new WWII Traveling Footlocker for classroom use. Giving a new generation the opportunity to hold a steel penny.

Cross share from our friends at the Broomfield Depot Museum. Broomfield from the air in 1927.

Check out this photo of Broomfield found in the Broomfield Depot Museum Collections. This was taken in 1927 from an airplane! Can you guess what street that is?

If you guessed W 120th Ave, you would be correct. This was before the turnpike was put in in 1955. The railroad tracks and grain silos are still there today. For more information and photos from the Broomfield Depot Museum Collections check out the Depot website: https://bit.ly/3r0hsoV

The museum is seeking a donation of a WWII-era (1941-1945) high school yearbook (preferably from Colorado; such as Louisville, Boulder, Denver, Arvada, Longmont etc) to become part of an educational trunk to go into classrooms.
