Brambleton Presbyterian would like to invite you to consider a one-time gift to the Equal Justice Initiative at https://www.brambletonchurch.org/online-giving.
We will receive your gifts during July and then send what we receive to EJI in August.
Founded in 1989 by Bryan Stevenson, a widely acclaimed public interest lawyer and bestselling author of Just Mercy, EJI is a private, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides legal representation to people who have been illegally convicted, unfairly sentenced, or abused in state jails and prisons. EJI works with communities that have been marginalized by poverty and discouraged by unequal treatment. We are committed to changing the narrative about race in America. EJI produces groundbreaking reports and short films that explore our nation’s history of racial injustice. We recently launched an ambitious national effort to create new spaces, markers, and memorials that address the legacy of slavery, lynching, and racial segregation, which shapes many issues today. EJI also provides research and recommendations to assist advocates and policymakers in the critically important work of criminal justice reform. For more info about EJI: https://eji.org/

In July, Brambleton Presbyterian Church is pleased to offer a series called Bringing Science to Church. We will see that God speaks to the church through science and Scripture. As the founders of the 16th and 17th century Scientific Revolution put it, there are two books with one Author—the Book of Scripture and the book of nature. As Christians, we flourish when we read both because we hear the Gospel of salvation in Jesus Christ and how God has made this literally wonder-full world. We’ll learn from these two books—and how scientists can help us in this task—as we also grow spiritually.

Our guest pastor is the Rev. Dr. Greg Cootsona; one of Pastor Elizabeth’s long-time friends. Greg is a speaker and writer in science and faith, emerging adults, C. S. Lewis, and Christian life and thought. He teaches in religion, humanities, and philosophy at California State University, Chico. He currently co-directs Science for the Church (www.scienceforthechurch.org), a project designed to bring science to Christian congregations as a resource for spiritual growth. He is also a minister at-large in the Sacramento presbytery, having served as associate pastor for adult discipleship at Bidwell Presbyterian Church in Chico from 2002-2016 and at the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City from 1996-2002. His most recent books are Negotiating Science and Religion in America: Past, Present, and Future (Routledge, 2020) and Mere Science and Christian Faith: Bridging the Divide with Emerging Adults (InterVarsity, 2018). We are proud to offer this timely series for free! Everyone is welcome and we hope YOU will join us! Each sermon may be viewed on Sunday mornings in worship at 10am here: https://www.brambletonchurch.org/messages-video. You will also be able to download these sessions (for free) after each event.

Sunday Worship Service: (Good Samaritan) Luke 10:25-42 This Sunday, Pastor Elizabeth will help us explore the story of the Good Samaritan in the Gospel of Luke. We will see how Jesus Christ addressed the invisible systems that reinforced racism in the first century. What he had to say is quite timely as we discern the path that God is calling us to take today. #brambletonchurch

Racism in the United States
I want to thank you for your overwhelming support of our June 7th worship service. Since then many of you have expressed ideas about how to move forward toward racial reconciliation and justice. I am grateful for your compassion and willingness to engage in this very important moment in the life of our nation. Based upon recent events, it’s clear we must act.

The elders and I are continuing to pray and discern the path forward for our church. Jesus’s words in Luke 10 are our guide; “Love God. Love your neighbor as yourself.” Your answers to some of the questions in the survey I mentioned above will help us in our discernment.

Finally, while our path is still emerging we’d like to encourage you to take advantage of an offer from Warner Brothers. During the month of June you may view “Just Mercy” (for free) on many streaming platforms. Based on a true story, the movie focuses on the life of the civil-rights attorney Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan) as he fights to overturn the wrongful murder conviction of Walter McMillian (Jamie Foxx).

Just Mercy surfaces many timely issues: https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-watch-just-mercy-free-streaming-rental.

06/20/2020

Dear BPC Family,

I hope you are all doing well! I really miss being with you in person. Hopefully we will be able to meet as a church family soon. Today I am writing with three important updates.

Resuming In-Person BPC Ministry
In May, the Session appointed a task force to prayerfully consider when and how we might resume meeting together again. The team includes Mark Tallarico and John Sturman (co-chairs); Rich Wardell, Ed McPike and Ginny Darling. This team recognizes BPC members have different thoughts on what would work for them and their families. To help guide our thinking about resuming in-person ministry we’re asking you to complete this online survey by June 26th.
https://assessments.gloo.us/a/RGVwbG95bWVudENvbmZpZ3wxNzEwMDI4MDMyNjMzMjEwNzgz

The results of the survey are anonymous unless you elect to provide your contact information for follow-up by BPC. Alternatively, you may reach out directly to Mark or John to give your answers in person ([email protected]; [email protected]).

Based on a true story, the movie focuses on the life of the civil-rights attorney Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Just Mercy surfaces many timely issues: https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-watch-just-mercy-free-streaming-rental.

BPC Search Committee
Last week Ginny Darling shared that God is calling her back to teaching. For six years BPC has truly been blessed through Ginny’s inspiring leadership gifts! Fortunately she is not moving away so she will continue to be an active member of our church. We will find a way to celebrate her leadership later this summer. In the meantime, I hope you have been showering her with love.

In May, Session also formed a search team to fill two part-time positions; Worship Leader and Family Ministries Director. The team members are Jackie Hempstead (chair); Dave Pavlik, Michelle Tallarico, Raphael Mbelli, Anne Bradley and Jen Patel. BPC recently hired Kishore Carey and Holly Vanek so a process is already in place to begin a search immediately. You can help in two important ways. First, please pray God leads the search team to the right leaders. Second, if you have any leads please pass them onto the search team.

Finally, I want to encourage you to also shower Dave Pavlik with appreciation. Dave wasn’t expecting to step back into an interim worship leader role and yet when the need arose he was willing! Dave greatly blesses our beloved church family through his inspiring Christ-centered leadership.

With love and gratitude,

Pastor Elizabeth
