COVID-19 announcement: we feel it necessary to comply with the directives of our governor. The farm will be closed to the public until further notice. Volunteer numbers will be limited. So very sorry - we hope, though, that this will keep everyone safe as we want to see our friends again soon.

This photo is taken from outside the house where Priscilla is persistently trying to get in or at least give a message to someone. Given that Henryka is not at the farm at the moment, we are now ruling out jealousy as the motive. We believe this is a power takeover move. Stay tuned to find out what this Wiley chicken is up to.

Meet Roger the guinea pig.

Little Roger was found near the Germantown library by some very responsible and kind children who knew that the outside world was not a good place for a guinea pig. Roger seemed to not have any idea why he was out and about. He was pretty confused.

The children found an adult and that wonderful adult reached out to the community to find if he was lost. No one claimed him. Poor Roger. Roger didn’t have a home anymore.

But today, Roger took a very interesting car ride. It was bumpy and noisy. He did not like it. But now he is happy because he is in a big, bright blue room and he has a hidey tunnel and lots of good food.

Roger’s prospects in life just got a lot better.

Gardeners' Corner | Star Gazing Farm Animal Sanctuary in Boyds Maryland

It's that time of year when folks are starting to work on their gardens. We have, as always, composted (and full fresh, steaming hot, if you want to jump-start your own compost pile) manure. We do not deliver, but you can come to pick up.

Times for pickup: Fridays 9-noon and Saturdays 9-2. BUT PLEASE NOTE: if you need to the front loader to load compost into your truck, please contact us in advance to make sure a qualified tractor driver is available. If you are coming just with bags/buckets, just stop in at the farm office to see which way to drive up to "The Piles."

Full info and manure FAQ here: http://www.stargazingfarm.org/manure-for-your-garden/

Our beloved animals can help your garden grow! We collect, compost, and regularly aerate and turn our piles to produce fantastic black gold for your gardens. We do not charge for the compost, but we truly appreciate any donation you might be able to make to the farm to help feed the animals and keep...

I am baffled. I do not know why Priscilla keep standing in all the windows and pecking like she wants to get inside. The other day she and her boyfriend beat the tar out of Redd. Redd is now inside recuperating. I have introduced him to Henryka who is going to be his new girlfriend.I have an ugly feeling that Priscilla is not satisfied with this turn of events.

Delegate Dana Stein, sponsor of the Wildlife Killing Contest Ban Bill explains why these cruel contests where foxes, raccoons, and coyotes are killed for cash or prizes should be prohibited in Maryland. Please click the Action Alert and tell your legislators to support HB 863!

The potbellied pig crisis is real. I have gotten a request every day this week asking for help in placing pigs.

Please please - if you know anyone who is interested in adopting a house pig (yes, some of these are beloved pets and are housebroken) or you have a farm and are able to take in an outdoor potbellied pig please, please contact me. I can put you in touch with multiple folks who are in need of rehoming, and/or shelters who are needing to find homes. It's heartbreaking.

These pigs, I have read, have the intelligence of a 5 year old child They have deep emotions. They bond to us like dogs do. In my experience they have a wide vocabulary and are just wonderful animals.

(Photo is of Daisy, a client of mine who, happily, has a lovely and loving home.)

A beautiful story.
I'm going to follow this with my own commercial for this wonderful place. Please read this and fall in love with a place where all kinds of animals are friends; where each is loved; where each had been in some horrible place; treated horribly, etc before Farmer Anne rescued them. She shears sheep in many states to pay for the vet bills and feed and on and on. There are wonderful volunteers who help her and wonderful people who adopt an animal and give it financial support or just write a check to be used as needed. And yes, it's always needed. Thank you on behalf of the wonderful work that is done here. Kate
