All our congratulations to our amazing longtime volunteer Linda Aitken, who received by appropriately socially distanced delivery the Margot Pettijohn Volunteer Achievement Award for 2019!

Linda has served over 1,650+ hours since she began in 2009, averaging over 150 hours annually. She is known for her cheerfulness, generosity, engagement, and her willingness to jump in and help no matter the request. She is a learned, engaging Side Walker, a versatile Horse Leader, and an excellent role model and help for new volunteers. In addition to her program work, she’s shined as an Equine Assisted Learning volunteer and is a devoted “Monday CST” volunteer. Linda is also one of the horses' favorite carrot delivery persons!

The Margot Pettijohn Volunteer Achievement Award was created in memory of our beloved friend and active volunteer Margot Pettijohn, who passed in 2018. This award celebrates her commitment, leadership, and versatility as a volunteer, and we're so proud to name Linda as this years' recipient!

Linda, our heartfelt thanks for your many years of tireless service to Great and Small. You're an absolute gem!

GREAT AND SMALL UPDATE:

While we hoped to keep operating in some capacity to serve our community, it became clear last week that, in order to keep our participants and volunteers as safe as possible, we would need to shut down program operations. We will be closed until at least April 30th, and will keep you informed as the situation develops.

Our community is the backbone of the work that we do, and during this time many of you have reached out asking how you can help. While our staff and Board are working hard to reduce operating expenses until we can reopen, the need to suspend our programs has significantly reduced our income.

At Great and Small, approximately two-thirds of our operating budget comes from gifts, donations, grants and fundraising events, while programming revenue accounts for the other third. As we cannot generate revenue through programs or the fundraising events we had planned for this spring, the Board of Directors is looking at creative ways to bridge the resulting funding gap.

We hope you will consider giving generously. It is through donations like yours that we are able to serve our community – and our need has never been greater. Please consider making a tax-deductible gift through the Facebook donate button (or link below) so we can continue to provide excellent care to our program horses and return fully staffed to do this important work.

Dear Friends of Great and Small:

We have been carefully watching the situation develop, and at this point it seems most prudent to close our doors. The safety of our participants, volunteers, and staff is always our highest priority. While we never imagined that aim would lead us to this solution, for now, the best way for us to keep all of you safe is to shut down.

All programs at Great and Small are cancelled through at least March 28, 2020. Participants will be credited for lessons missed during the shutdown. Volunteers should not report for any scheduled volunteer shifts, including barn work, during this time. As more information becomes available, we will reassess options for resuming programming.

While we’re certain this is the right step to take for the safety of our community, it comes at a time of very real financial strain for Great and Small. If you are in a position to make a donation to help us feed horses and pay staff through this shut down, you can do so here: http://greatandsmallride.org/helping/donate/donate-online/
The $10,000 match for recurring monthly donations is still available as well.

Stay healthy and we’ll see you on the flip side!

Maybe you prefer your money to help a horse with their feed, hoof care and medicine? All this is possible with your donation today.
