A #WishlistWednesday Thank You!

A big thank you to our wonderful community on our last #WishlistWednesday— so many of our “Greatest Need” items were fulfilled on our on Amazon Wishlist! Special thanks out to the Roviera, Cole, and Nolan families as well as several anonymous donors.

We still have many needed items on our Amazon Wishlist, including items to help keep our horses cool and happy through the summer months.
Through your orders, Great and Small has received nearly half the needed number of safe, outdoor rated box fans for our program pony stalls— can you help us reach our goal?

We are excited to be inching closer to a new normal as vaccination rates increase. That being said please be aware Montgomery County still has a mask mandate in place. For now masks will still be required for all participants, volunteers, and staff.

We expect this to change soon and will keep you updated as our team makes those decisions.

Many thanks to all who attended last night's fundraiser, especially the leadership team at The Comus Inn for their generosity and for hosting us at this incredible venue.

We'd also like to welcome Sally Sterkel (pictured left in the photo), our 2021 Summer Residential Intern and a student at Edinboro University in PA. Yesterday was Sally's first day at Great and Small and we are all very excited to have her as part of our team for the next few months!

Today we are launching Great and Small's new weekly segment, #WishlistWednesday, where our team highlights some of our greatest needs around the farm. Operating our facility, keeping costs low, and providing the best experience to our amazing horses and participants is high. Monetary and in-kind donations cover nearly 70% of our operating budget.

Can you help us bridge this gap on this week's Wishlist Wednesday? We often use almost $50 worth of equine fly spray every week to keep our horses comfortable in the hot summer, and enclosed-motor fans for are rated for wet conditions and keep the risk of barn fires low, and keep our program ponies cool during the summer.

These donations are greatest need for or Center, and we have flagged these wish list items and as High Priority on our Amazon Wishlist - can you help?

It's National Volunteer Appreciation Week, and we're thankful for our volunteers!

Barn volunteers are an important part of providing daily care for our equine partners. They perform a variety of tasks, including helping our staff with feeding and turn in/out, daily grooming and tacking for program lessons, and therapies such as Cranial Sacral Therapy (CST), which contributes to our horses' health and happiness. Thanks to our wonderful barn volunteers!

It's National Volunteer Appreciation Week, and we're thankful for our volunteers!

Our volunteers wear many hats in service to our program horses at Great and Small. Schoolers are experienced riders who exercise our horses outside of therapeutic riding lessons in order to increase their fitness and suppleness. Our schoolers keep our horses both feeling and performing their best, as they help fine-tune skills that are asked of our horses in therapeutic lessons. Schoolers are a vital part of our organization, as they work with their mount to make sure that they are fully prepared for anything that might be asked of them during a therapeutic riding lesson.

It's National Volunteer Appreciation Week, and we're thankful for our volunteers!

Facility volunteers play an essential role in keeping Great and Small looking its best. Facility volunteers help with barn chores, fix and clean up fencelines, landscape our flower beds, and keep our pastures clean and safe for our horses. A clean and organized facility enhances our mission, allowing us to maintain a safe and beautiful environment for our participants. Thanks to our fantastic facility volunteers!

It's National Volunteer Appreciation Week, and we're thankful for our volunteers!

Our volunteers are an important part of our outreach, representing Great and Small at various events around our community. Outreach volunteers inform the community of the work we do at events such as Poolesville Day, Great and Small’s Murder Mystery Trail Ride, and by serving community partners such as the Maryland Horse Trials at Loch Moy Farm. Community engagement and outreach events help fundraise for our program, horse, and facility needs, as well as spread the word about how we serve the special needs community!

Our fresh, newly branded website was made possible this year when we were selected by a cohort of graduate students at The University of Alabama MS in Marketing program - our website rebuild was a feature of their capstone project. We are deeply grateful to this cohort for their excellent work!

It's National Volunteer Appreciation Week, and we're thankful for our volunteers!

Our volunteers wear many hats in service to our program and facility at Great and Small. Most importantly, they serve as Horse Leaders and Side Walkers in our program lessons, helping our riders learn the basics during our therapeutic riding lessons. Our program volunteers bring a wide range of experience to our program participants, and serve an incredibly important role in lessons: helping riders achieve their greatest level of independence!

The numbers are in: thanks to the support of the equestrian community at The Maryland Horse Trials @ Loch Moy Farm, we raised over $1,000 in support of our therapeutic and adaptive riding programs!

Program fees account for only 30% of Great and Small's operating budget - community fundraisers are critical to the success of serving our participants with physical, emotional, and cognitive disabilities. Thanks to the support of our community (including our army of volunteers who baked or volunteered their weekend to help out) - YOU help make this work possible!

It's #SpotlightSaturday! Today's spotlight is one of Great and Small's longtime voulunteers, Leila Ashkeboussi. Leila has been a volunteer at G and S since 2012 as both a leader and sidewalker, and sometimes horse schooler. She started riding horses for the first time at age 24 after she finished law school and needed something to fill her spare time. Riding was such a magical experience that she wanted to share it with as many people as possible of every ability. She started searching the web for volunteer opportunities nearby at accessible therapeutic riding barns and found Great and Small was only a few miles from where she was living at the time!

Prior to COVID closures, she volunteered weekly or biweekly, but hopes to return. Her favorite thing about volunteering is watching parents and caregivers see a new side to the student emerge that they might not get to see in other environments. Leila also enjoys casual horsetalk with the instructors and other volunteers.

Something cool about Leila: she’s a beekeeper!

Follow along each week for Spotlight Saturday where we feature members of the Great and Small horse and human family!

Great and Small is volunteering this weekend and we need YOU! To serve our community, we're helping out with parking at the MD Horse Trials @ Loch Moy Farm this weekend, October 17th and 18th, and we need volunteers to help! Want to join us? We need extra hands on Saturday and Sunday morning to help direct traffic and do a little fundraising and sell baked goods. NO experience necessary and it's a GREAT way to get some SSL hours. The weather should be beautiful and it'll be a fun time out at the farm! Contact Katy at [email protected] to sign up and for more information. Photo courtesy of GRC Photo.
Thank you so much for taking great care of my Bartie! He looks so happy and healthy. We are very grateful for you.

Icky day but riders were all smiles today at the 5th Annual Great and Small Horse Show. Well done riders, parents, horses, volunteers & staff❤
We'd like to extend a special thank you to Kristopher's Pizza in Poolesville, who generously donated food for our barn volunteers while they were working so hard supporting our Horses on Pointe fundraiser last Saturday. Thanks Marina and Kristopher's!
Hey Everyone! Come visit us at this Saturday, 9/16 at Poolesville Day! Great and Small will have a booth and we'd love to see you, so stop by! Feel like helping out? We can use volunteers for shifts between 10am and 4pm. Hand out literature and share your stories of how volunteering at Great and Small has changed your life with the community. Email Katy Hansen if you're interested.
