Jewelry for change raffle!

After some early morning, post-caffeinated contemplation, it occurred to me that despite how imperative it is that we strive to achieve JUSTICE in our currently broken system, not everyone might want to wear a ring engraved with said word in giant letters.

And, since the main goal here is to raise money for two organizations crucial to that goal, I’ve decided to switch things up a bit. All the rules remain the same as before, except...and I’m pretty sure you’ll like this better...now the winner gets to choose one of these pieces.

If it’s a ring, it will be made to your size. If it’s the friendship bracelet, I’ll string it with any color you’d like 🌈

Thank you for your patience with my novice ways 💕🙏😘

Moria, our neighbor, and veterinarian’s Tunis sheep, the source of Hurd, our twenty-mile yarn.
Last week we selected fleeces to send to @Skirtedfleecemill for processing. Skirted Fleece is a short trip over the Delaware River owned by the adventurous duo Adam & Liz. From studio to mill, just twenty-miles!

Interested in becoming more knowledgable about the natural world around you? We highly recommend The Outside Institute.

The Outside Institute was founded in 2017 to nurture humanity's innate affinity for the wild. We aim to inspire joyful awareness and an essential reciprocity between all beings, regardless of species, color or ability. At this time, our group walks and workshops are suspended in light of the NY State mandate to maintain social distance. In the meantime, Founding Naturalist @laurasilverman is offering private walks on your land or at a chosen destination. Learn about wild edibles and medicinals, native and non-native flora, and how to identify mushrooms.

I find a lot of joy in foraging local plants for natural dyes; however, it is truly more about connecting with the natural world. Local plants for food, mushrooms, herbs, dyes... the hunt for it all brings the greatest joy.
Katie Grove Studios opened up that world even further, offering courses in wild basketry. Recently a white pine fell on our land, as well as a birch on my sister's property. I used both to create this and several other baskets. The wood from the trees will be used for the outdoor dye pit.
I'm looking forward to connecting with my other classmates this weekend to learn more about harvesting materials for wild crafting. Thanks Katie! 🌲🌾

A pretty roadside flower turned out to be a variety of coreopsis. I tried a small dye pot and was expecting yellow, but it turned out a gorgeous apricot color on merino wool.
Lance-leave coreopsis, also known as Lanceaf tickseed, coreopsis lanceolate, is in the Asteraceae family along with daisies and sunflowers 🌻

It’s that time of year when the blossoms are on the blackberry bushes. Here is a sample from last year; we used the leaves and branches to create beautiful shades of grey-green. The wool is Cotswold, the fabric (top-bottom) linen, cotton, and raw silk.🌿

We have an older forest here; it seems each storm brings down yet another tree, this time a large pine. It will be cut for firewood for the dye pit. But first, the bark, lichen, and some roots will be harvested for future projects. I gathered the cones for a dye pot with our River yarn. 🌲

05/19/2020

Before we fully get into dye season, here are some tips on harvesting plants. The leaves from the daffodils (used for cordage) were cut after the flowers bloomed and only a few from each grouping. Leaves shouldn’t be cut back until after they turn yellow, this way you’ll get beautiful daffodils next year. You can see from the basket how many leaves were collected from the group of plants behind it. 🌿
When gathering plants at home, along roadsides or with permission from private properties, take only a small percentage leaving the rest for wildlife, birds and bees. 🐝
If you need material for a larger project, gather from various locations, not harvesting all from one area. 🌾
Keep a journal of where and when you gather your plants. Different soils, time of year can affect your results. 📒
Dye season is just getting started in the northeast, I’ll share more information on regional dye plants as the season unfolds. Wishing you a wonderful dye journey!

Knitting a #classicribbedhat by @purlsoho on plastic pink double points. The wool is our River yarn sourced locally and milled by @mjpacker and her team at Battenkill Fibers.
I've been collecting vintage wooden and plastic needles since my first trip to NYS Sheep & Wool. There was a vendor on the first floor of one of the barns that carried a lot of interesting equipment and vintage pieces. Does anyone remember who that was? There's something about using needles that were once loved by someone else.

#flashbackfriday
A gift from @yatra108 who introduced me to Gardenia jasminoides. It can be purchased as an herb, used as an antioxidant. It is also widely used as a dye for both for food and clothing.
With such a strong dry source, I like to make sachet bundles so that they can easily be added to a second or third dye bath 🌼

Finding peace outdoors and forgetting mushroom season is about to begin! While harvesting wild broccoli rabe (Yellow Rocket) yesterday, we came across these beautiful cinnabarinus mushrooms, with signs of more to come. Last year was my first time dyeing with cinnabars, and the result was a golden color. I have quite a collection of dried mushrooms; I'll add these too until I'm able to collect more.

Slow down, lay your body on the ground, quiet the mind, breathe, rest, heal, dream. Listen to the heartbeat of the earth as yours slows to match hers, give thanks for the blood coursing through your veins and the air flowing in and out of your lungs. Listen, listen, listen. What started as a fall project appropriately fits today's dreary weather. Our River yarn dyed with local walnuts and marigolds, simply woven into a comfy shawl. Both brown and tan colors are from the same walnut dye bath, the first bath produced the richest color, the tan is a from a second exhaust bath. The yellow is from our friend @kathleendiaco’s marigolds from last summer’s garden.

It’s been real nice sharing studio space with Mom (@fishercatfiberco) during quarantine. It’s a creative space for sure. I get to look out at this beautiful scenery, watch deer and birds pass by and see the trees starting to bloom. Haven’t spent this much time with her since I was in high school. Going live from instagram tonight at 7pm. The service at the house here is limited, but we are going to give it a try. Tune on in if ya can. Hope everyone is staying safe and sound out there ⚡️

What’s the Best Material for a Mask?

Along with vacuum bags as material for masks, this article recommends quilting fabric and tells you how to test your material.
”...quilters tend to use high-quality, high-thread-count cotton. The best homemade masks in his study were as good as surgical masks or slightly better, testing in the range of 70 to 79 percent filtration.”

Scientists are testing everyday items to find the best protection from coronavirus. Pillow cases, flannel pajamas and origami vacuum bags are all candidates.

What is most disappointing about canceling our spring Makers Market next month is that our amazing community of artisans will not have a platform to sell their goods. Many wonderful markets have canceled events across the country and for a maker, this is just like closing the door on their shop. During our time of staying home and keeping safe, we encourage everyone near and far to support their favorite artisan during these precarious times. Take a scroll through these talented makers who we look forward to seeing at our next market. Show some love, follow their creative journey, and maybe even make a purchase. Follow our stories this weekend as we feature each artisan and their work.

See our list of makers on our website with a link to their website at www.thefarmhouseproject.market
