Austin Public Schools
The School Board of Austin Public Schools is conducting a search for a new superintendent. The school board contracted with the Minnesota School Boards Association (MSBA) to provide guidance and assist us with the search.
The School Board met on October 5, 2020, to plan the search. Stakeholder input regarding the superintendent search is now being requested, and a public survey is available for staff and community members to fill out beginning October 16, 2020 to November 2, 2020. This survey is available in both English (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/AustinEnglish) and Spanish (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/AustinSpanish).
Hard copies of the survey are also available at the District Office. Please return all completed surveys to the District office by November 2, 2020.
Thank you. Your feedback will provide valuable insight to the School Board as they make this important decision for the Austin School District.

The Safe Place is a sacred space where children are instructed, encouraged, and supported in attending to their emotional upsets through self-regulation skills we have taught them during teachable moments. The journey from unconscious emotions to managing our feelings involves five steps: I Am, I Calm, I Feel, I Choose, and I Solve. #iHeartCD

"Without composure, you can't access any other skills." Powerful words from DJ Batiste that remind us that before attempting other skills, we must learn to quit taking student behavior personally and to compose ourselves before responding.

#MaskUpMowerCounty - An Open Letter from Students at APS
Last year, the world changed. In less than a month, we went from a normal school year to distance learning. We lost concerts, activities, sports, and time with our friends. Our seniors even lost their traditional graduation. Now that things are slowly beginning to return to normal, we wanted to take this opportunity to ask you to Mask Up Mower County.
It’s time for our community to come together and do our best to protect one another so we can safely resume the activities we love. This means respecting social distancing, wearing a mask in public, and working together to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. When I choose to be safe, I’m protecting not just myself, but everyone around me. If we all work together, we can help make sure this school year doesn’t get derailed like last year. This means making safe choices not only in school, but at home and on breaks as well.
No one wants school to have to close again, and so I’m doing my part. Please help us keep learning in school, playing the sports we love, and taking part in the activities we all missed last year. Remember, we’re in this together.
Please, Mask Up Mower County.
Ruby's Pantry Austin
OK, so here is the idea...clean out a space in your vehicle to put two boxes or baskets. Two boxes for each bundle (two bundles would use 4 boxes). The trunk is preferred. When your turn comes to get in line, have your trunk or door open and you will go down the line stopping at each station for a volunteer to place a food item(s) into your container. Everything else about our distribution is the same as in the past. GUESTS enter off 4th Ave SW. You will stay in your vehicle. A $20 exact cash donation for each bundle. 2 bundle maximum per vehicle. No exceptions.
That's it. Please follow instructions and don't jump to the next station until you get the OK from a volunteer. We will see how this goes and may use this process in the future. The reason for the change is explained in an earlier post.
We will post the food list as soon as we get it Wednesday and we look forward to seeing you Thursday the 15th at the Mower County Fairgrounds starting at 5:00 PM.
Thanks to all our volunteers and our partners Thompson Sanitation, International Paper, KAUS AM/FM, The Austin Daily Herald, Andy's Logging, The Mower County Fair Board and the Mower County Emergency Management Office. See you the 15th!

If you are looking for a way to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, grab your friends, some popcorn and watch this documentary!!
LATINO AMERICANS is the first major documentary series for television to chronicle the rich and varied history and experiences of Latinos, who have helped shape North America over the last 500-plus years and have become, with more than 50 million people, the largest minority group in the U.S. The changing and yet repeating context of American history provides a backdrop for the drama of individual lives. It is a story of immigration and redemption, of anguish and celebration, of the gradual construction of a new American identity that connects and empowers millions of people today.
Thank you Nitaya and Miguel for bringing the video about Latinos in America - Peril and Promise to our attention

⚠️To address some great questions:
The program is open to any Austin resident - does not need to be an APS student; however, for right now, does need to be grades 7-12.
We are running the program during school hours right now for a couple of reasons: 1) that was when we were able to secure space and 2)it was designed to support students while in their distance learning model.
With these things in mind, we are currently working on the following:
Partnering with additional locations so we can add Wednesday and after school tutoring times.
Hiring tutors that can support a virtual tutoring model. Application below ⬇️⬇️
Expanding tutoring to include K-6th grade students.

Farmer John's Pumpkin Patch
To my little kindergarten and preschool friends:
I am so sad that your class cannot come to the pumpkin patch this year. I miss you!
You can’t play in the silo or see the chickens or do magic or sing Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star and A B C or watch Farmer John carve a pumpkin, but I planted pumpkins just for you and now I have too many. Would you please ask your Mom or Dad to bring you to Farmer John’s so you can go out to the field where your pumpkin is growing and pick out your own free pumpkin.
I would like it very much if you could draw a picture of my pumpkin patch or me or Farmer Jan or our dog Stine (rhymes with Lena)
Hope you can come
Farmer John & Jan
PS: Tell your teacher to contact us. We might be able to help find a way to be sure everyone gets a little pumpkin!
