Thank you Games People Play for the mask donations!

Tim and Jackie from Games People Play stopped by the LEC and graciously donated N95 masks to the the police department and the Mower County Sheriff's Office. These masks are invaluable and we can’t express how thankful we are for your generosity!

Austin Police Department - Minnesota

The Governor issued executive order 20-33 (EO20-33) yesterday which extended “Stay at Home Minnesota” until May 4th. It also added 3 days to the closure of places of public accommodation putting that date as May 4th as well.

While I was expecting this, it did not make it any easier to hear. There is a real economic and social pain being caused right now in our preparation for a disaster that most of us can’t see or feel yet. We know though that many in our community are feeling the economic damage caused by mandated business closures or slowdowns as customers stay at home. There are yet others who need the social connections of friends, families, and co-workers that can’t happen at this time either. It has to be acknowledged that this extension carries with it deep economic and social consequences. I do think the Governor and other State leaders are aware of this and do not ask this of Minnesotan’s lightly.

It is still hard to accept and process though. It feels as though we are in the passenger seat while our driver takes evasive action to avoid a washout in the road. In this case though we can’t see the missing section of road, we must “trust” that it is there, that our driver’s actions are appropriate, and that they will cause less harm then having gone into the hole in the road.

That word “trust” exists in a one of the few mantras that has stuck with me in my particular profession. It is usually attributed to Ronald Reagan, supposedly sourced from a Russian proverb. “Doveryai no proveryai” or as we know it “Trust, but verify”. In the case of Covid-19 I think we can verify through what the public health authorities are saying (and what is occurring in other States and countries) that the threat our State is reacting to is real and demands evasive action.

While the disease spread in Europe, New York did little to react. On March 1st New York had 1 confirmed case. On the March 22nd they had 15,000 cases with 56 deaths and only then put their lockdown into place. It was too late and by 4-8-20 they had 149,000 cases with 6,628 deaths. Minnesota by comparison had 54 cases on March 16th when the places of public accommodation were ordered closed. We moved early and it seems to be working.

It might be argued that we are not New York though. Our demographics are different, we are naturally spread out, and their problems won’t be ours even if we relax our restrictions. It isn’t worth it and it won’t happen here, right? I think these same thoughts, I have these same hopes. Then I look closer to home. If you are a college sports fan this is Big Ten country and if you root for the Vikings it is the home of the NFC North. The Gophers playing the Wolverines for the Little Brown Jug is the oldest trophy game in college football. The Vikings have shared the North/Central with the Lions for decades and have been in the NFL together since near its inception. So I looked to Michigan.

Minnesota had its first case March 6th and Michigan its first on March 9th. On April 1st Minnesota had 689 cases and 17 deaths while Michigan had 9,334 cases and 337 deaths. Yesterday, the 8th, Minnesota had 1,154 cases and 39 deaths while Michigan had 20,346 cases and 959 deaths. The 114 deaths in Michigan was their 3rd day in a row of having over 100 deaths due to Covid-19. Like us they struggle with their closures and what it means to their economy. They can at least see the washout in the road though. They are feeling the impact caused by a lack of resources and their health care professionals are being afflicted by the 100’s with the virus. They are not different from us and offer the best verification to me of why we should continue to stay the course on social distancing, hygiene, and staying at home whenever possible. It does seem to be working in Minnesota and staving off what Michigan is experiencing, allowing our hospitals time to prepare for when this does arrive in higher numbers. I do think that time is still coming.

You will ultimately need to make your own assessment of these issues. Democracy requires discussion and thought by its citizens. Stay at Home Minnesota only works if all of us do our best to abide by it and implement it. I have said previously this is not something we can “police” into working. We can only make it work if we all trust and believe it is worth it and working. Austin has done a fantastic job of doing this so far and I think the whole State has as well. Most of us are doing our best to abide by the letter and spirit of the order. I know it is hard. I know we are at a tipping point in a lot of ways. Stay the course, consider the cost, or debate the outcome but always keep in mind that we are a community.

I, and all of us at the Austin Police Department, again extend to you our thoughts and thanks whether your heroism is manifesting itself by still needing to work in critical sectors, is tied to the sacrifice of wanting to work but not being able to, or if it is simply that you are making the daily decisions to stay at home whenever you can.

Sincerely,

Chief David McKichan

Did you know that when you ride your bicycle on the road you have to obey all traffic laws. That includes stopping at stop signs, using a headlight at night, and riding on the right side of the road. Austin also has an ordinance prohibiting bicycle use on the sidewalk in the business district.
