Austin Dog Park

Austin Dog Park SPARK is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting a public dog park in the City of Austin, MN. SPARK is a group of citizens who desire to bring a dog park to the city of Austin, MN.

We are working with the city council, the Austin Area Foundation and the Park and Recreation Department to reach this goal. Now that a location has been approved by the City Council, SPARK will begin the fundraising process so that we can donate the materials for the parks fence to the city. Members of SPARK want to keep the cost to the city as minimal as possible. Therefore, we have agreed to raise the money for the fence. We also hope to continue to raise money over the years improve the park and keep it beautiful.

Mission: To establish a fenced in, off-leash dog park where well-behaved canine citizens can exercise in a clean, safe environment without endangering or annoying people, property or wildlife. To develop a beautiful, well-maintained space open to all dog lovers and friends who are willing to uphold the park's rules and restrictions. To view this park as a community project, in partnership with the City of Austin, designed to satisfy the needs of dog-owners and non-dog owners alike

Park has REOPENED! Reminder to follow ALL park rules!

The Dog Park:
The public dog park has reopened. As we have stated it is likely that canine parvovirus exists in all public places used by dogs. As the rules state, have your vaccinations current and pick up after your pet. Thank you to Matthew Ziebell and his crew for picking up many bags of dog waste that had not be properly removed by users of the park. Again, every user must follow the posted rules and be advocates for your park. Thank you.

The Dog Park is CLOSED until further notice due to potential CPV.

Park and Recreation Director Kim Underwood said Austin Police notified her after a dog owner called them to report....

PET HEALTH ALERT - PARVOVIRUS - We have had a recent outbreak of parvovirus in the Austin, MN community. 6 cases in the last month which is very unusual. This virus is VERY contagious and found in the feces of infected dogs. Parvovirus is a preventable disease with proper vaccination. One vaccine for a puppy does not provide adequate immunity against this virus! Puppies need a series of vaccines for parvovirus starting at the age of 6 to 8 weeks of age until 16 weeks of age, to provide adequate protection. This vaccine is then boostered regularly throughout their lives so they can maintain immunity. Parvovirus is a very expensive disease to treat and in some cases can result in a week of intensive hospitalization. The fatality rate is also high, about 10 to 20% of dogs do not survive. If you have friends or family members with new puppies or adult dogs that are not vaccinated please encourage them to visit their veterinarian. Vaccines are inexpensive and save lives.

Be Aware:

Officers took a report of someone throwing dog food with broken glass into someones yard in the SW part of town. This is the third call in the past few months in the SW where it appears that someone is intentionally attempting to harm dogs/animals through food or toys. Please keep an eye on your pets and contact the LEC immediately if you see anything or know any information about this.

This afternoon officers took a report that someone had thrown chunks of meat with fish hooks in them into a yard of a residence in the SW. The homeowner found their dog eating the meat but it appears the dog hadn't consumed the fish hook. Please pay close attention to your dog when it is outside.

Chatter overheard at the park - the City has indicated that it will be checking on licenses at the park. If you don't have a license for your pet, make sure you get one soon or you may be ticketed. It's easy to do and fairly inexpensive. Check out the city's website for more information :

Business Licensing The City of Austin licenses various types of businesses and the office of the City Clerk is responsible for issuing those licenses and permits. As the weather begins to warm, we are reminded that Community Pride Day is right around the corner and it is our duty to help pitch in and clean-up the park. If you would like to help, please let us know and we will put you on the list of volunteers. The date should be announced shortly.

Reminder - with colder seasons approaching, the water fountain at the park has been shut off until next spring.

The Doggy Dip at the municipal pool will be August 22 from 6:00-7:30 pm. Come out and let your four-legged friend have some fun!

The Water Fountain is in! Thanks to the City of Austin and donations raised by SPARK, the water and cemented entrance is complete. Come check out the new improvements!

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mayor Tom and his wife who lost their beloved dog, Annie, in a house fire this morning. The Mayor, his wife, and other dogs are ok. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Now that the weather is getting colder and maybe two-legged & four-legged friends are spending more time INSIDE... SPARK would like to remind you of the basic park rules that many may not have taken the time to read and consider. Grab a hot chocolate or coffee, and please take the time to read/review the rules so we can all continue to have super times ALL YEAR ROUND at the Austin Dog Park!!!

1. Use Dog Park at your own risk.
(Please remember and consider that this includes risks to your own dog and yourself AS WELL AS any risk your own dog may create or do to another person/dog.)

2. The park is open from 6 AM to 10 PM.

3. Owners must clean up after their dogs.
(Please note: Plastic garbage bags are only provided by people who bring them to the park by their own donation. Those using the park are ALWAYS encouraged to also recycle their own bags from home by simply bringing them to the park to help us replenish our "stash" of bags. In due time, SPARK hopes to also purchase and install permanent bag stations--maybe even eco-friendly bags!!!!)

4. Owners are legally responsible for their dogs and any injuries caused by them.

5. Dogs must be under the control of their owners at all times, limit of 3 dogs per person.
(We are so happy that the four-legged users can socialize with one another... but please remember to also keep an eye on your dog at all time to help read its body language as well as keeping an eye on when to scoop!)

6. All dogs must be properly license, inoculated and healthy.

7. Animals should wear a collar, current rabies tag and ID tag at all times.

8. Owners must carry a leash at all times. Dogs must be leashed before entering and prior to leaving the park.

9. Open one gate at a time to prevent escape.
(Please also be mindful of children and/or other preoccupied owners to assist in keeping this entry-system for the safety and fun of all attendees!)

10. Dogs showing aggression towards people or other animals will not be tolerated and removed from the park. Animals who exhibit a history of aggressive behavior will not be permitted.
(If you are afraid to approach an owner about this type of behavior, please do not hestitate to call the Austin Police Department, 437-9400 #1 for these types of complaints OR IF IT IS AN OBVIOUS EMERGENCY SITUATION--CALL 911). Bullying is not tolerated by humans... lets also try and maintain this comparison to our dog park (Humans and K9s alike!!!)

11. Puppies using the park must be at least four months old.

12. Owners must not leave their dogs unattended or allowed out of sight. (Please review #5)

13. Dog handlers must be at least 16 years of age and children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult and supervised at all time.

14. Dogs that are in heat are prohibited from using the park.

15. Outside food, including dog treats, are prohibited.
(This rule may sound silly... however, dogs are not like people--food can cause aggression and competition between dogs that are already attempting to figure out who is in charge!)

16. Violators will be subject to removal from the park and suspension of park privileges.

17. Use of the Dog Park is subject to the Austin City Code, including ordinances prohibiting camping, driving or parking on the grass, glass, and the hitting golf balls in public parks. Violations of Austin Public Park ordinances can be deemed misdemeanors and carry a fine, as well as other penalties.

18. For your safety and the safety of others please follow these rules.

In consideration of the benefits derived from your use of this off-leash facility, you agree to assume all risks inherent in the use of this facility and release the City of Austin from any damage claims arising by reason of your use of this facility, including damages and injuries caused by acts of other users and their animals.

Thanks for reviewing our park rules, and please remember these rules are simply present to ensure best park practices--especially so we can ALL enjoy this wonderful place!!!!

S.P.A.R.K. members are meeting soon to discuss goals and improvements to the park for 2014. Please let us know what you would like to see at the park to make it even better. Those interested in joining S.P.A.R.K or would like to help out with projects or fundraising, please let us know. The city can only do so much within its budget, any additional improvements will require the commitment of dedicated park patrons.

As many of you have seen, the city has started to cement the entryway at the park. During this project, the large dog area has been closed. The small dog area is available for use through the lawn mower gates. However, use caution when entering and exiting since this is not a double gated entry. Also, because all dogs must use the smaller space temporarily, please take that into consideration based on your individual dogs' needs and abilities when visiting the park. The project is expected to be completed in less than a week.

MEETING: Monday, June 10 at 7:00pm, downstairs of City Hall.

If you own a dog and use the park, you are encouraged to attend.

These are some of the items on the agenda for discussion:
1. update on Park & Rec pouring concrete at entry
2. ideas for fundraiser to pay for a shelter (for people, not dogs)
3. people, businesses and organizations that might make tax-deductible donations
4. possibility of a water source
5. ideas for replacing grocery bags with bio-degradable bags

UPDATE: After some further discussion with the City, the plastic furniture will stay put for now. However, everyone needs to make sure to stack the chairs neatly after use so they won't cause problems with the mowers. So please spread the word. We will continue to work with the City to provide additional seating in the park. If you are interested in helping with this project, or any other improvements, please let us know. If you are interested in donating to improvements for the park, please see the donation information under our "About" tab.

NOTICE: The plastic furniture left by a park patron will be removed tomorrow. Please spread the word that whoever brought it down to the park needs to remove it before tomorrow or the city will claim it. The City plans to bring an additional table to make up for the lost seating. SPARK will be working to raise funds for a small shelter and additional seating, so if you are interested in helping us with that project, please contact us or make a tax deductible donation. See donation information under our "About" tab.

REMINDER: Meeting TONIGHT at 7:00pm at the library. Please join SPARK and learn how you can help make our park even better.

Does anyone have or know of a page or group or chat where dog owners can post when they’re at the park or you can see when people are going to be at the park? FYI I’m here with a little doggie pool so the pooches can cool off in this heat!
Went looking for it and couldn't find it...
