We are pleased to report that the youth from the Villa dorm are having a fantastic time on their camping trip. The weather is absolutely beautiful! They have been hiking, swimming, cooking over an open fire, and of course, no Gerard camping trip would be complete without raccoons trying to steal food from the campsite! The group has one more night in the great outdoors before they head back to campus, full of stories and memories! A big thank you goes out to the all the dorm staff for all the hard work and planning that goes into these trips. We would also like to thank our supporters that so generously donate to Nexus -Gerard. Without you, trips like this would not be possible.

The youth from the Normandy dorm enjoyed some outdoor water fun on their new slip and slide. The slip and slide was just one of many of the outdoor rec activities that Nexus-Gerard was able to purchase thanks to donation money from kindhearted Nexus Family Healing supporters. These donations provide the "extras" for our youth that so many of us just take for granted.

Brent Henry, our former Executive Director, presented to the Youth Care Professionals today on the topic of "Growth from the Inside- Out". During the presentation staff were encouraged to shift their paradigm on how they view our youth's behaviors and to resist insisting on compliance, but rather coming from a place of understanding what the youth really need. Presentations like these are crucial in providing better services for our youth. Thank you Brent for sharing your expertise and knowledge with us!

Group therapy can take many forms. It doesn't always have to be participants sitting in a circle talking about their feelings. Therapist, Amanda Hanson's therapy group had been discussing traditions. She decided to take the group outside and learn ways to appropriately celebrate the 4th of July holiday. The youth practiced many skills while sharing a meal and playing games with one another- with staff guiding them every step of the way.

Who is Marsha P. Johnson?
Marsha P. Johnson was an American gay liberation activist, self-identified drag queen, and outspoken advocate for gay rights. She was on the front lines of protests against oppressive policing at the Stonewall Rebellion in 1969 and founded one of our country's first safe spaces for transgender and homeless youth. https://www.cnn.com/2019/06/26/us/marsha-p-johnson-biography/index.html
Thank you, Marsha P. Johnson, for your courage and bravery that helped pave the way for LGBTQ youth. #PrideMonth

Supporting Black LGBTQ Youth Mental Health – The Trevor Project

Why is #PrideMonth celebrated in June? On June 28, 1969 police raided Stonewall Inn, a popular gathering place for young gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender people in New York City. This raid consisted of arresting employees and roughing up patrons while a crowd of 400 people became enraged and rioted outside. Although police reinforcements dispersed the crowd, riots continued for the next five days, and these Stonewall riots (also called the Stonewall Rebellion) provided the spark that ignited the gay rights movement in the United States.
Sound familiar? This month, we want to honor LGBTQ history and use that knowledge to support LGBTQ youth. Tia Dole, Chief Clinical Operations Officer at @The Trevor Project, shares ways we can support the mental health of Black LGBTQ youth during this critical time. Changing Lives

Nexus-Gerard Family Healing is located on a beautiful 12-acre campus in Austin, MN, that once served as the Hormel Estate. The site has retained many of its homelike charms, including the family living room, cozy bedrooms, entry drive, gardens, and trees. A nature preserve is adjacent to the property, and wild turkeys and deer are often seen roaming the grounds.

Nexus-Gerard provides an array of individualized mental health services for boys, girls, teens, adults, and families. Nexus-Gerard’s history began in the 1960s, when it was founded as the Gerard School, a treatment site for the care of children. Throughout the years, it has been known as Gerard of Minnesota, Gerard Treatment Programs, Gerard Academy, and, today, Nexus-Gerard Family Healing — but it has always retained its focus of caring for children and families.

Nexus-Gerard has demonstrated excellence in its treatment approach and was awarded Provider of the Year by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in 2012. In 2015, Nexus-Gerard opened an outpatient program to serve children, teens, adults, and families in the community in answer to County and School needs for mental health services in the area.
