That’s why we make these such a big part of our program. They really can save a life.
They say experience is the best teacher. We say skip the trouble and learn from others.

This is a great Eagle Scout project right in our backyard!
On behalf of Manassas National Battlefield Park, thank you to Omar Thondique and Boy Scout Troop 505 from Alexandria who braved the morning rain to construct a 40-foot stretch of boardwalk along the Deep Cut Loop trail.
This Eagle Scout project will allow visitors to better access and walk in the footsteps of the largest Union attack of the Second Battle of Manassas.

It’s not too late for adult leaders to sign up for Woodbadge this year!
Come join us for the 2021 courses!
Indy was a Life Scout, as was the actor Harrison Ford, who is also Han Solo. Ergo, Han Solo is a Life Scout. At least that’s what we decided this week.
The prologue of 1989’s “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” reveals that the title character was a Boy Scout while growing up in Utah.

It was a great week at summer camp! Our scouts really emerged and thrived, even after a summer squall. Well done boys!
Mark your calendar today for one of the largest annual food drives in the metropolitan area and our council’s biggest annual service project - Scouting For Food. Like last year, we are giving our Scouts giant sticky notes to put on their neighbor's doors. Scouts will distribute these notes on November 6, 2021 then return a week later on November 13, 2021 to collect the bags of food.
NAYLE is an exceptional experience for youth leaders who have completed their local NYLT course. And now you can earn college credit!
For the first time, those who attend the academy not only will learn how to teach NYLT courses in their home councils, but they can also get college credit for it.
Great information to keep in mind as we head to camp in 10 days.
When your body loses too much water and salt, trouble follows. Know the symptoms and how to treat them.
Great programs for our Scouts require proper funding through public giving. Please consider donating to help us meet our dollar-for-dollar match to secure and additional $60k in financial support for our scouts and programs here in NCAC.
Oh, and please share this with those who may be interested!
Here are some great and practical ideas on how we can reduce our footprint.
Here’s one for troops that are up for a true challenge: Consider taking steps toward becoming a zero-waste Scout troop.
Why we do it.
Time for a little #MotivationalMonday 😎 Who all is heading off to camp to have some fun and learn some things?! If you are, be sure to give your camp a shout out in the comments 🏕️💥🤗
In a large troop such as ours, the SPL relies on a quality troop staff to fill these positions of responsibility and make their work meaningful during their tenure. Our troop staff should be working to be the very best at their appointed position, much as we expected from our elected leadership. That’s when we are really performing at a high level and delivering a best-in-class program.
Every Eagle Scout must spend at least 16 months in a position of responsibility before earning the highest honor in Scouts BSA.
Our leaders going to camp that week will be completing this valuable training. If you aren’t joining us at camp and would like to to complete your ASM training, here is a great local opportunity.

While summertime temps rarely call for a cool weather bag, it isn’t too early to be thinking about the Fall. If you are looking for a decent “starter” bag, this is a good list. Not an endorsement, but I should note that the Kelty Cosmic 20 is a favorite on several lists, including Backpacker magazine.
Our five favorite sleeping bags for less than $200 include options for backpacking and car camping, plus a variety of temperature ratings and shapes.
A scout is Brave. Bravery comes in many forms and not all brave scouts are awarded the Medal of Honor, but we certainly hope all scouts develop the character that makes these things possible.
For his conspicuous gallantry during the Korean War, Eagle Scout Ralph Puckett Jr. has been awarded the Medal of Honor.
The crew doing the Baden Powell yesterday had a great time learning about our Nation’s historical connections to Scouting. And walked about 10 miles doing it.
Our James E. West crew walked all of the way around the National Mall as well.
Fantastic job Scouts!
We have several aspiring archers going to camp this year. They should know Ryan pretty well by the end of the week!
Today we introduce our 2021 Archery Director, Ryan Haggerty. Ryan is returning for his 7th summer on the Rodney Shooting Sports staff but his 1st summer in this new role. An Eagle Scout from Troop 283 in Newark, Delaware, Ryan is currently attending the University of Delaware as a third-year student studying Computer Science and Economics.
The secret to a successful trek, much like performing at Carnegie Hall, is practice, practice, practice! Build strength through regular walking paired with periodic longer hikes. Add weight as the hikes get easier and you’ll be ready for anything the next trek throws you. Our goal should be enjoying the hike, not simply surviving the trip.
My troop is going on a 25-mile hike soon. What is the best way to prepare for it?
NYLT is an exceptional leadership training program focused on youth leaders. Scouts must be First Class and 13 to attend, as they will need to be proficient in their outdoor skills.
The council-offered youth leadership course was last updated in 2005.
Scouting - it’s not just for kids!
The handbook has a lot of great information, especially if you are new to camping and outdoor adventure. There’s also information about lifesaving first aid skills, sustainability, our natural world, even cooking!
While these sections, charts and guides were written for Scouts, they contain information or insight that will help Scouters.
