Prepare for summer camp now with these helpful tips - Bryan on Scouting

Troop 761 will hold a couple of Summer Camp preparation meetings as we get closer to our June week. However, it is never to early to start thinking about how to set your scout up for a successful week. Here are good tips from Scouting magazine. I will add that one of the “lifesavers” we have discovered is the SansBug mosquito netting pop-up; by far the best netting we have used at camp.

Summer camp is a big Scouting step. It is a time for fun, growth, newfound freedom, responsibility and learning -- for both Scouts and parents.

Governor Northam Announces Limited Capacity Increases for Indoor and Outdoor Gatherings, Some Entertainment Venues as Vaccinations Rise

The limits on outdoor gatherings have moved to a maximum of 100 participants, which is really good news as we consider our move towards more in-person activities. We can also consider indoor activities for up to 50 participants. As always, we will confirm guidance from our Council before planning our activities.

Meet Hamilton Bradley of New York, the earliest known Black Eagle Scout

This is a fascinating story and not just because of the historical significance. His report his excursion to the Scout exhibition in MA is a wonderful peek into Scouting in 1920.

Hamilton Bradley of New York is the earliest known Black Eagle Scout in BSA history. His Eagle court of honor was held on Dec. 19, 1919.

It was a fantastic day for a hike today! We had several scouts who shows they had the stuff to hike Antietam Battlefield. We clocked the hike at just over 7 miles and we beat our return goal by 30 minutes! More importantly, we got to enjoy the first day of Spring together while learning about a pivotal moment in our nation’s history. A few scouts even got some advancement done.
Great job Scouts (and parents and siblings)!

Who’s ready to start camping again?!
We
Have received new guidance that will allow us to meet outdoors and go camping, as long as we follow our safety protocol. We would to hear from our parents about how comfortable they would be with both in-person meetings (outside and socially spaced) and possibly camping in April. Be on the lookout for a parent survey.

How to Buy a Backpacking Stove For Your Next Camping Adventure

Not every scout will need a backpacking stove to start. If your scout wants to get into the backcountry, here are some tips for picking this valuable tool.
Full disclosure: I carry a Jetboil and a Snow Peak, but the Jetboil is the one I use most.

It was a cold and breezy crossover day on the frozen Tundra of Brambleton and only the hardiest of Scouts were bold enough to forego their jackets. But a small and dedicated band of brothers (and loyal parents) were there to welcome our newest scouts to Troop 761. Three cheers for these accomplished young men (and an extra cheer for Vedh who walked the bridge in shorts!).
