La Leche League of Ashburn

La Leche League of Ashburn Our café meetings are held on the first and third Thursday of every month at Panera Bread, located at 43670 Greenway Corporate Dr, from 10am-11am.
Who We Are La Leche League is an international, nonprofit, nonsectarian organization dedicated to providing education, information, support and encouragement to women who want to breastfeed. All breastfeeding mothers and pregnant women who are interested in breastfeeding are welcome to come to our meetings and call our Leaders for free help and support. La Leche League meetings cover many aspects of breastfeeding. As we meet the needs of mothers expecting their first child, and the needs of mothers nursing their babies, we find a wealth of information to share and discuss. Since we are all expanding our knowledge of mothering, child development, and family life, no two series of meetings are exactly alike.

La Leche League was founded to give information and encouragement, mainly through personal help, to all mothers who want to breastfeed their babies. While complementing the care of the physician and other health care professionals, it recognizes the unique importance of one mother helping another to perceive the needs of her child and to learn the best means of fulfilling those needs. LLL believes that breastfeeding, with its many important physical and psychological advantages, is best for baby and mother and is the ideal way to initiate good parent-child relationships. The loving help and support of the father enables the mother to focus on mothering so that together the parents develop close relationships which strengthen the family and thus the whole fabric of society. LLL further believes that mothering through breastfeeding deepens a mother's understanding and acceptance of the responsibilities and rewards of her special role in the family. As a woman grows in mothering she grows as a human being, and every other role she may fill in her lifetime is enriched by the insights and humanity she brings to it from her experiences as a mother. The League's purpose is distinct. This singleness of purpose does not prevent interaction with other organizations with compatible purposes, but La Leche League will carefully guard against allying itself with another cause, however worthwhile that cause may be. (from La Leche League Purpose and Philosophy, LLLI Publication No. 300-17)

Mission: Our Mission is to help mothers worldwide to breastfeed through mother-to-mother support, encouragement, information, and education, and to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy development of the baby and mother.

Weaning is hard whenever and however it happens. This comic pretty realistically portrays some common emotions mothers feel about weaning. 😄

Does the thought of weaning fill you with mixed emotions? If you have weaned, how did you feel as you were experiencing it?

Children who grow up never seeing breastfeeding at home and only seeing bottle-feeding on TV or in books are surely less likely to want to breastfeed their own babies when the time comes. They’ll also be far less likely to ask for help with breastfeeding if it has never been a part of their lives.

Breastfeeding Grief: Emotional Healing When Breastfeeding Does Not Work

Hilary Jacobson has published a new book supporting mothers who could not breastfeed. FREE on Kindle. This could be a really helpful, positive read for so many mothers.

"Through my book Healing Breastfeeding Grief, it is my intention to help mothers heal their emotional wounds and reconnect with the love that is always flowing between a mother and her baby—if we just turn our focus toward it, become fully present, and allow ourselves to perceive, believe and experience it."

General information

The basic philosophy of La Leche League is summarized in the following statements: Mothering through breastfeeding is the most natural and effective way of understanding and satisfying the needs of the baby. Mother and baby need to be together early and often to establish a satisfying relationship and an adequate milk supply. In the early years the baby has an intense need to be with his mother which is as basic as his need for food. Breast milk is the superior infant food. For the healthy, full-term baby, breast milk is the only food necessary until the baby shows signs of needing solids, about the middle of the first year after birth. Ideally the breastfeeding relationship will continue until the baby outgrows the need. Alert and active participation by the mother in childbirth is a help in getting breastfeeding off to a good start. Breastfeeding is enhanced and the nursing couple sustained by the loving support, help, and companionship of the baby's father. A father's unique relationship with his baby is an important element in the child's development from early infancy. Good nutrition means eating a well-balanced and varied diet of foods in as close to their natural state as possible. From infancy on, children need loving guidance which reflects acceptance of their capabilities and sensitivity to their feelings. The ideals and principles of mothering which are the foundation of LLLI beliefs are further developed in THE WOMANLY ART OF BREASTFEEDING, the most comprehensive handbook on breastfeeding and parenting ever published. It has provided needed answers to three generations of nursing mothers on every aspect of breastfeeding. (From LLLI publication No. 300-17, "La Leche League Purpose and Philosophy.")

I would love some tips on starting to ween my 11 month old. My first child stopped nursing at 6m and I exclusively pumped until 1 year and then slowly started mixing in whole milk with the bottles. This child takes a bottle without a problem, but because I hate pumping it is not regular (2-3x a month maybe). I don’t think he uses breastfeeding for much bonding - he rarely comes to me for nursing, but I still schedule nurse sessions 9:30, 12:00, 2:30, 5:30 and he usually wakes at night around 3:00am and 5:30am to nurse. This is probably a stupid question, but Is there any way to ween other than pumping instead of breastfeeding and slowly adding whole milk to the bottle until they’re used to the change?
Feeling a bit defeated today.....Addie is a little over 3 weeks old and I was doing fine keeping up with her demand... and today, it feels like I am empty and she is VERY frustrated and doesn't seem satiated at all. She is fighting sleep and when she does nap it's for only 5-10 minutes. any tips? This is the first time it has happened and I feel AWFUL about it.
Happy New Year. My 7 week old was getting up 3 times a night until 2 nights ago. He has a bit of a cold and is now sleeping more at night (maybe related). Even with changing the diaper and tickling feet I can only get him to nurse one side. So he has gone from nursing each side 3 times to only nursing each side 1 time per night. I have tried not to pump this time Bc I had oversupply issues last time but I am worried about my supply. Should I just let me breasts adjust naturally or is this too much of a sudden change and should I pump? Thanks!
Hi, Are there meetings Thursdays at Panera?
Hi! So Google told me its completely normal but hoping you all can confirm. I've been pumping during work for the past 5 months and haven't had this happen yet. Normally I have a "broken" side if you will. One side pumps almost 3oz the other barely 1/2-1oz. Today however that little side pumped over an ounce, but its was bubbly or foamy. Almost like soap was in it. but it smells and looks normal otherwise. Is it ok to use?
Any OTC allergy meds that are safe while bf...?
I have not taken any medications while nursing because I fear it will mess with my supply. My son will be 1 this week, and my allergies are killing me!! Has anyone had any success with allergy medicine that did not impact their supply?
Need advice! Had to get additional surgery after my C-section for complication. Was put under General Anastasia. I was told it would take 24 hours for it to get out of my system, and then 12 hours for the Dilaudid painkiller to get out. Since I don't get any milk out with a pump, I have hand expressed some milk from each breast since the 24/12 hour mark, but usually don't get too much out. Just wondering is it safe to nurse yet? Or should I wait and express a few more times?
I have 17 ounces of breastmilk that'll expire within a week and much much more that'll expire later. My lil one won't take a bottle and I'd hate for it to go to waste. I'm in Leesburg. Please let me know if you're interested.
Can I use milk I pumped on a Friday for day care on the following Monday? Or is that too far out so I should freeze it instead?
Morning! Just wanted to pass along some information I just received from Medela. I have had the same pump since my first boy was born in 2010. It has served me well and is on it's last legs. So I emailed Medela to ask about how to dispose of the pump. Medela has a recycling program and they will take any Medela-brand electric breast pump, regardless of age and condition. They will take the pump apart and recycle each portion appropriately. They do NOT reuse parts for manufacturing purposes.
