Check out Team DMV's team fundraising page for Cooley's Anemia Foundation

This weekend, thousands of supporters in cities across the U.S. will be participating in our Care Walk in honor and support of all those living with the challenges of thalassemia. Care Walk is the Cooley's Anemia Foundation's largest annual fundraising event, bringing together the thalassemia community and its supporters around the country.

Children born with a severe form of thalassemia require lifelong blood transfusions as often as every two weeks, as well as a daily drug treatment that, for many, involves pumping a drug into their bodies for 8-12 hours every day. Though there have been tremendous advances in care, the wide range of complications results in shortened life expectancies. There is at this time no universal cure.

We invite you to join thousands in the fight against thalassemia today - we need you! Funds raised support thalassemia medical research, patient support services, and education initiatives to raise awareness of this genetic blood disorder.

Hi Care Walk Team, Patients and Families!!

Unfortunately, with the current climate, situation, and governor's ordinances for Virginia, having an in-person Care Walk this year wasn't feasible. We are heartbroken to say the least but hoping that we can all still rally around a great cause and do a Virtual Care Walk from our own neighborhoods, share videos, and post photos to this DMV Care Walk Team page!

Here are some ideas for the Virtual Care walk that the CAF team has come up with:

+ Wear your Care Walk shirt and walk around your neighborhood/the block/a town center. Post and take photos and videos.
+ Wear a mask and video yourself asking people if they know about CAF/Thalassemia (spread awareness) - please social distance!
+ Make signs/have balloons and carry them on the walk sharing about Thalassemia and why we are walking
+ Create a "Lemonade Stand" (again with masks, socially distanced), to collect money for CAF and informing people what the Care Walk means/stands for
+ Volunteer in the community with your Care Walk shirt on. Do something good for someone else. Pay it forward. Random acts of kindness.

The Care Walk is more than just walking, it's about community and our personal relationships which I know we will miss so much this year. However, if we rally together to spread the message of CAF's mission, share with our close friends and families, and spark joy in others, the purpose and mission will still be there. This was truly a difficult decision to make but it is the best and safest choice for all our patients and families. I speak for all of us when I say we look forward to our next in-person Care Walk soon!!

So join us next Saturday - post your photos, videos and any other positive messages to this page! Thank you for your understanding and support!!

Just In: the Care Walk will be postponed to September, 20th!

We are disappointed but this just means we have even more time to raise funds and awareness! Please spread the word and save the date!

Due to the ongoing situation concerning COVID-19, the Cooley’s Anemia Foundation will be postponing the 2020 Care Walk from May 3 to September 20.

We regret the necessity of taking this step; however, we feel that given the fluidity and unpredictability of the current situation, it is in the best interests of all to make this change. Even if the bans on public gatherings are lifted in a relatively short time, we do not want to run the risk of anyone possibly contracting coronavirus from a Care Walk gathering. In addition, it will take people some time to set their lives back in order after this disruption and many will not be able to focus on activities like Care Walk or may not be in a position to support it in the manner that they would like, were we to stick to our original date.

While we do try to provide as much flexibility as possible for teams and individuals scheduling Care Walks, we request at this time that no one consider a Care Walk prior to September – again, for the safety of all involved. If circumstances change in the next few months, we will revisit whether some teams or individuals could schedule a Care Walk prior to the official September 20 date. We also will continue our Care Walk art contest and will extend the deadline for submissions until April 30.

Please know that we did not make this decision lightly. We value the importance of Care Walk to our community and hope that all of you will be able to stick with us and make our 2020 Care Walk in September the best ever!

Craig Butler
National Executive Director

FDA worried about blood shortage as donation drives are canceled amid coronavirus concerns

There are uncertainties around every corner during this trying time and our hearts break for those who are ill, the medical staff tending to them, small business owners, hourly paid workers, grocery store clerks... the list goes on and on. But one thing that has worried me constantly since the moment this all started is a massive worldwide blood shortage. If you know a Thalassemia patient, you know they need blood transfusions to survive. What is happening right now has already cancelled close to 3,000 blood drives across the nation.

If you are healthy and able, please PLEASE consider donating blood. The donation process is safe and secure.

FDA urges healthy individuals to donate blood as American Red Cross blood drives are cancelled nationwide, putting the country’s blood supply at a potential risk.

What is Thalassemia?

Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder that causes one's red blood cells to fail. Many need monthly blood transfusions and medication is extremely expensive.

Many kids from the earliest stages of life need continuous monthly blood transfusions. They appreciate life and fight for life.

All touched by Thalassemia appreciate that you are considering joining us in a walk for a cure!

This will be a fun-filled family event!

Coffee and bagels from Bethesda bagels for registered walkers and an amazing t-shirt designed by a child with Thalassemia. It’s the image in the logo.

Lots of live indie folk music from Eli Lev and Emma G. Two amazing musicians from the DC Metro to get you groovin!

Activities for kids including face painting and balloon animals.

Local Bethesda merchants have been super supportive, many donating silent auction items! Thank you!

Thank you to DMV based Hair Cuttery for sponsoring the DMV event and also being a National Sponsor of Care Walk 2019!
