To all my Friends in va and md, I am the chairperson for the Loudoun Education Foundation's Golf Classic at 1757 golf course. The event is September 17 and we still have some spaces left for golf and the charity dinner afterwards. Lots of prizes, auction items, Redskins and Politicians, a wonderful buffet, and all for a great cause. Our web site has more information and a place to register and donate online. Come out and see me for a great excuse to play hooky on a Monday. Www.lef-va.com

“I’d like to thank my family, friends, neighbors, and the residents of Ashburn for their support the past 12 months. This has been an incredible experience and something I will draw strength from for the rest of my life. I’d also like to thank the other 4 candidates for running a spirited and cordial campaign. We are thrilled for Eric and the opportunity that awaits him. I hope he is successful advocating for all the children of our district and our county. He will make a great School Board representative. Thanks again, Chris"

We are in the final days of the campaign. Please ask friends and neighbors to vote on Tuesday and pass along my name. No time to slow down, I'll be out in Ashburn today and tomorrow!

This week was awesome! I was invited to the Seldens Landing PTO forum and the Lansdowne HOA “Meet the Candidates” night. Many good questions and comments from our Ashburn neighbors. I'm also trying to visit as many communities I can and personally meet voters. It has been a very positive experience and I'm counting on my friends to help spread the word in the final weeks of the campaign. More to follow...

The summer of 2011 has finally come to a close and what a way to end it. An earthquake, Hurricane Irene, family vacation and minor surgery, all in the last 3 weeks! Plus, we (teachers) reported back to school on the 17th and the students arrive TOMORROW. Thanks to my Ashburn neighbors whom I met this summer and asked me to listen to their concerns for our schools. I plan on spending much of the Fall helping to voice our plans for LCPS and also meeting more of you. See you after my school day!

How's your summer going? I'm happy to say I have been out meeting and listening to my neighbors and other candidates in my Ashburn District. My observation is that there are many issues in education we care about, and we really do care! I found this article that I will share with you. Let me know your thoughts about education and the impact of socio-economics versus experienced teachers. Stay COOL!

Here is an update on the campaign trail. I'm starting to meet neighbors from my Ashburn District to discuss their concerns with our schools. It's been very enlightening. I also met with Educate Loudoun and both political parties at various events. It's hard to stay neutral in a suburb of DC. All in all I'm very excited about meeting more people and bringing my message to the community. Who's with me???

StudentsFirst Answers Your Questions

StudentsFirst.org is an organization trying to change the educational climate in today's "last in, first out" hiring practices across the country. I am not advocating for or against this organization, but I am interested in a dialog with my neighbors and friends who care about our children's education. Please take a look and let me know your thoughts on these issues.

The questions below have consistently come up through the conversation on the StudentsFirst page. We wanted to answer the questions and look forward to continued discussion of these issues.

School Board Address | Citizens for Chris Souther

This week I had the opportunity to address the School Board regarding the $8.5 milion in unspent funds. I was one of 35 speakers and the only one to ask for more time before committing all the money. LCPS has until June 30th to allocate the funds, so I don't know why they had to vote on May 24th. Another reason why we need "different" leadership. You can see my address when you click on the video link.

Went to my Daughter Sammi's graduation at Old Dominion University this weekend. It was so beautiful! She was amazing and to see how proud she was to accomplish this in 4 years was wonderful. Pappa was thrilled (tuition payments finished) as well.

This has been a week of highs and lows, and it's only Wednesday! Last night I got a chance to scoop ice cream at Cold Stone Creamery for a fundraiser. My school packed the place and I had a blast serving the students. Tonight I attended the wake for Warren Guerin, a school board member who passed away from Cancer. He was a help to me and offered good advice. I'll miss him.

An interesting week on the campaign trail with a few surprises thrown in. There is another candidate running in my district (and baby makes 3) and the local paper said he was running “unopposed” from a district that used to exist (still does). As my 7th grade students say, “Wait, what?” I did clarify with the reporter and she might run something about me in the future.

You know The Who song, "Won't Get Fooled Again"? After the budget and redistricting process, I'm thinking of the line, "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss". I now live in the town AND district of Ashburn (3rd district name in 3 weeks). The school budget cuts are now on the clock. Next week's school board mgt should be interesting!

03/27/2011

The new districts were approved and I will soon live in the ASHDOWNE District. It is a combination of Ashburn Farm (south) and Lansdowne (north). Sounds like we need a new song to go with our new name. How about, "Ashdowne races here we come, doo-dah, doo-dah. Ashdowne district's 5 miles long, Oh doo-dah day." Too much fun!

03/04/2011

This week I was invited to a meeting of the Loudoun Republican Committee. Although I did not speak, I did listen. I can say that some of the school budget information was news to me, all in all it was interesting. Being an Independent still seems right at this time. I'm in it for the students, not the politics. Hopefully, the redistricting plan will come about quickly.

Went to Thomas Jefferson's home, Monticello, on Sunday. A very complex place built by a complex man. Hated slavery but owned slaves. Created our government but said, "that most bad government results from too much government.” And favored public education for all, but noted not all should continue their education onto to college. He was not an inventor, but he modified inventions for better uses. I felt a peace while walking the place.

Attended some great meetings this week with current School Board members and also some online learning people. The best part of this campaign has been the ability to talk education with some really cool people. Attended my first Democrat meeting (as an invited guest candidate). They treated me graciously, even if I am an Independent. Still waiting for the GOP invite. Need the red to round out my white and blue ;)

If you watched any of the President's speech last night, you had to be excited about what he said regarding education. More accountability, more technology and more recognition and respect for the teachers who make every day a learning day. Looks like someone was reading MY WEBSITE this week!

As the budget process moves along for our school system, I am slowly putting together some insight to the publics' perception of "importance" for funding. My feelings are you need to think of ALL our students, not just your own. We ALL live in the same general neighborhoods separated only by roads, railroad tracks and of course, dry cleaners. Maybe it takes a village to raise a school system????

01/08/2011

What a week! I gave my first newspaper interview (Leesburg/Ashburn Today), recieved my first campaign donations on www.chrissouther.com, and started communications and dialog with some members of the Board of Supervisors. It has been encouraging to hear so many positive comments about my ideas, especially from the education community. Looking forward to 2011 dispite the snow falling RIGHT NOW!

As we approach the Christmas Day, I would like to say how wonderful it has been to meet so many nice people who are interested in helping the next generation of learners. Our children deserve the best we can give them and I am honored to be part of their future. Enjoy this time and be safe in your travels and warm in your heart.

Just returned from the public meeting on HS-8 at Belmont Ridge MS. Good points from residents and county officials. Gave my opinion from a teacher's perspective of a middle and high school sharing the same site (works well for both). Also asked for more transparency when it comes to the land deal and costs involved. Feels good to be involved!

12/18/2010

Well, this week (12/12-18), I submitted my Statement of Organization for school board candidate in Loudoun County, Virginia. I also attended another 4 1/2 hour school board meeting to learn about the issues and understand the school board members' tenancies. Met with state Senator, Mark Herring, who is a great guy and really took an interest in my ideas. Got my web site, www.chrissouther.com, up and running.

12/18/2010

I had only been in the "seriously thinking about running" mode for 1 month, and had done a good amount of exploration, research and met with some wonderful people. So, by completing the first round of paper work and announcing to my colleagues at school, and the incumbent, that I'm officially running, things should pick up from here. Only 11 months until 11/08/11, election day. “A New Education for a New Generation”
