Spent today preparing the cats for the rain. Last spring the railroad bulldozed all the bushes along the tracks leaving no shelter for the colony. The cats found shelter across the tracks but unfortunately it’s a major flood zone during heavy rain. We’re hoping they’ll use these shelters so they won’t get trapped by high tides from the rain opposite side of the tracks. We have awesome volunteers who put together these shelters. Cathy Gagnon enlisted the help of her kids and grandkids. The Veterans Store donated some of the totes too. We set up the shelters just as it began to pour. With everyone’s help hopefully the Rivertown Cats will stay a little warmer & dryer. 😺😻

Remember little Siggy? She was brought to the shelter as an emergency HBC (hit-by-car) kitten and rushed off to the emergency vet. She was in bad shape, with her tongue hanging out and we didn’t know if she would make it. Once we got the OK, we picked her up for some extra TLC and specialized care with. Today she went in for a vet check and unfortunately the fracture is so bad, her little leg needs to go plus a partial tail amputation too. She’s in a lot of pain right now, so they wanted to keep her overnight and they will be doing surgery first thing along with her spay. She will come out one extra special kitty ❤️ 🐾 Donations and prayers are needed for this sweet girl tomorrow 🙏🏻

HARP has about 20 English and 20 Spanish/English language animal welfare activity books for young children. If you know of any teachers that would like them for their classrooms, please text or call Karen at 925-783-3790. They are probably appropriate for children in first or second grade. They were donated to HARP by ARF years ago and we distributed many at our adoption or other pet events. We would be happy to share.

Karen Kops writes, for my birthday this year, I'm asking for donations to Homeless Animals Response Program. I've chosen this nonprofit because their mission means a lot to me, and I hope you'll consider contributing as a way to celebrate with me. Every little bit will help me reach my goal. I've included information about Homeless Animals Response Program below.

Our organization, HARP, works to decrease the number of kittens born to community cats through our spay, neuter, and immunization program (Trap/Neuter/Return). The number of surgeries we can do is limited by the number of volunteers and financial resources we have. We are a 501(c)3 established in 2006. We maintain colonies in the Rivertown area in Antioch that is sanctioned by the city. We also work in surrounding areas with caregivers. We appreciate donations and they are tax deductible.

In the grand tradition of orange tabby males, Blake is a budding lap cat, when he isn't tearing around the house. He is outgoing and friendly, and very happy to be in from the cold. He would love nothing more than his very own home for Christmas. He is neutered and current on his shots. Contact Susan at 925 219 2840 to arrange a meeting.

UPDATE: Blake has been adopted to a wonderful family. Happy Trails, buddy.

HARP is thrilled to be honored by two students from Bristol Middle School's leadership program. Aubree and Antasia have made HARP the subject of a video project, a thank you to HARP in recognition of our work to help the lives of community and feral cats. Eight years ago Aubree's family adopted two kittens from HARP and now they have taken the time to give back to the community. HARP deeply appreciates your time and recognition.

Cher loves computer work. Her favorite thing is helping her foster mom work from home. She loves being held and petted, and is used to living with other cats and small dogs. She is current on her shots and spayed. She is looking for her forever home, and would think it really fun to live with her litter mate, Sonny. For adoption information, contact Karen at 925 783 3790.

Fear. Most dogs and cats that come through our doors are terrified. The sounds. The smells. The strangers. The endless corridors of unfamiliarity. A lot of dogs and cats are brought to the shelter as a "stray", supposedly found wandering on the streets. Sometimes this is not the truth. Sometimes it is their owner bringing them in as they have reached a fork in the road in deciding between housing and their pet, or the pet has behavioral issues they can't handle or want to deal with, or the pet is sick and they can't afford medical, or they are moving, traveling, having a baby or simply just done with the animal. Whatever the reason these are the pets who suffer the worst fear. Their owner walked them through that door, dropped them off without a name, without an identity, without details of their personality, nothing. We are left to pick up the pieces of the broken heart that is trying to melt unnoticed into the concrete floor of a kennel surrounded by nothing or noone it knows. We risk our safety hoping to get a leash around the head of the dog buried in a blanket. We hold our breath hoping that the offer of a treat will stop the shaking and that the tail will emerge from between the legs. We hope to make eye contact and stop the cat from hissing or cowering at the back of the kennel.

That dog, with no name, has not forgotten the last place she saw you. She would wait there forever hoping you return. Beatrice would love to find her happily ever after in a new home. We can't convey to her that her people are not coming back for her. We know she will stop shaking soon. One day at a time Bea.

****Update on this gorgeous boy****

Miles is a Bichon Frise, neutered male, 8 years old. He is very friendly, active, loves to play with a ball, walks well on a leash, loves the dog park, housebroken, up to date on his shots, micro chipped, and recently had his teeth cleaned. He likes to chase cats, so a home without cats is a must. Miles is very gentle with kids of all ages. His owners are retired and do not want to board Miles for a long time when they travel. They do not think it is fair to him. They would love to find a great home for this wonderful, handsome dog. Please contact Karen by phone or text at 925-783-3790 or email [email protected]."

Sorry to make this adorable little girl look like a criminal. She isn't. This is Harley, a young female who is now looking for a new home after she raised a litter of kittens. She is very sweet and friendly, and so ready to live the good life. She is spayed, current on her shots, and microchipped. She can be seen at Petsmart/Pittsburg in the adoption area.

These two fellows are in desperate need of a new home. They are about 1.5 years old, fixed, current on their shots, and very friendly. Although they can be adopted separately, they are very good friends and it would be nice if they could go together. Their person is moving and can't take them. Call 925 348 3488 for direct contact information.

This mother cat and her four kittens need homes. Mom was living in a home until she showed up pregnant, and then she had to move on. The mom is very friendly, young, and the kittens are nice to handle and enjoy petting. The kittens are at least four months old. Mom and three of the kittens have been fixed and they are ready to go now. Two kittens are female and two are male, and my, isn't that a beautiful little family. 😊

UPDATE: THIS MOTHER CAT AND HER KITTENS ARE NOW AVAILABLE FOR VIEWING AND ADOPTION AT PETSMART IN PITTSBURG.

HARP has been contacted by an Antioch resident who will be going into hospice very soon. She is feeding four ferals at her home, and when she leaves there is no one who will continue feeding for her. Is there anyone in the Lone Tree/Gold Club area who might be able to do this? The cats have all been fixed.

This group of kittens were dumped at one of the feeding stations last night or this morning. They’re all tame and the sickest one managed to walk over to me. Because I have no one to foster them I took the group of 5 to Antioch Animal Services where they’ll hopefully find fosters and receive fluids and other TLC.

08/13/2018

Being born late in kitten season can be tough on feline families. HARP has been contacted about a friendly mother cat with two kittens. The person who has them can't bring them inside, and hasn't been able to find a rescue to take them. HARP can take them if we can find a foster. The kittens are between two and three weeks old, so it will probably require a month or more to get them to weight for adoption. Anyone? Fostering mothers and their kittens is fun. Mom does all the work and you feed mom, and play with the kittens.

This Maine Coon type teen aged kitten turned up in an Oakley neighborhood earlier this spring, very friendly and abandoned. He has been neutered and is being cared for by a woman who is leaving for school the end of this week. He is very, very friendly, named Cheeze It. He would love a home, and is in a tough place because the shelter is so over-whelmed with cats that only injured and sick cats are being taken. Anyone?

07/07/2018

There are kittens and a somewhat unsocialized mom in need of a place to reunite. The kittens are 2.5 weeks old. If someone can provide a bathroom and foster them, HARP will be responsible for food and care, and we will help get them adopted. Fostering moms and babies is easy and fun, especially when the kittens are a little older. Contact 925 348 3488 if you can help.

Just adopted Ireland (formerly Brownie) from H.A.R.P when they were at Pet Food Express yesterday and he is already very attached to his new brothers as you can see. That is his brother Bailey (formerly Gene) who is also from H.A.R.P and was adopted back in 2010! If you squint you can see Phineas in the back. He was also a rescue. Ireland was a little timid at first but warming up fast. He is so loving and sweet! Spoiling him a little with soft food and many treats...Thanks H.A.R.P!
