Coronavirus Has Accelerated Health Care Worker Burnout And It’s A ‘Reckoning We All Have To Face’

"Listen, I'm an ICU nurse. I take care of COVID patients. I've had COVID, this is really a sensitive thing for me.” - Julie Netzky, an intensive care unit nurse at Denver Health, describing conversations with skeptical community members, in an interview with Colorado Public Radio. The interview includes a look at the impact on both nurses and EMS teams.

Doctors, first responders and other health care workers were already at a higher risk for mental health issues and suicide. The COVID-19 pandemic made that worse.

"'They don’t hire new grads in ICU ... you should get some experience on the floor first ... it’s too much to work in ICU and go back to school'...I was determined and I didn’t listen - what people tell you vs what you tell yourself matters.
_____
Fast forward...this was my night last night (me pharmacy and lab had many interactions) ... during my shift I sat down twice and both of those times were to chart (I think I ate 🤔 but I also threw my retainer away in a napkin 🤦🏽‍♀️). Looking at this I’m reminded of how far I’ve come from wanting to get into nursing school and knowing nothing to being a nurse but still having SO much to learn. 🗣🗣To the new grads and aspiring nurses - be patient with yourself, be a sponge, ask questions, be confident in your foundation and assessment skills, advocate for your patient, pick a hospital with an ICU residency program, know that you will get through this, pray (🙏🏽 cause Lord knows), and most importantly be confident in YOU.

"Meet Michael Bobb. RN

I’m an RN single father of two from Ohio. I’ve been an RN since 2014. Currently, I’m working in corrections and previously, I was a travel nurse working med-surg and trauma.

Visibility matters to all people , especially marginalized people. If we are visible it’s easier to see us as people who matter. No one should be treated as less than based on our differences . It’s our character that should be judged not who we love, what we look like, or how we identify. There is so much more that binds us than separates us. We are all in this together. #queernurse #gaynurse' - Michael B. / queer nurses"

Hello all, I'm collecting data from nurses and physicians that work in hospital settings for my dissertation. I research job design and motivation in healthcare, and now I'm writing about how the design of electronic health records (EHR or EMR) affects provider motivation. If you work in a hospital with EHR, you can participate by following this link to a questionnaire on your computer or smartphone. You can even go the extra mile by sharing this link with colleagues or posting it to a Facebook group where other nurses or physicians will see. Thank you for your time and for supporting this important research.

In this moment ... how can I not be all in? My team inspires me everyday. The pandemic has changed a lot of things in many levels, but what I know “we were ‘us’ before this and we will be ‘us’ after this! Us is our One Team! A team that believes that they could do anything. Us is believing that better times are ahead of us. The Lord of the Ring’ character, Sam says it all: “It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end… because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing… this shadow. Even darkness must pass.” I am all in ... are you?
