Today we want to honor KP Mendoza, ICU RN, Mount Sinai Hospital, New York. Here is his story as reported by PBS NewsHour.

After a particularly brutal week caring for COVID-19 patients at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, KP Mendoza considered one final task: writing a will.

He’s only 24 years old, but as a registered nurse in the heart of a global pandemic, it felt like death was stalking him. “I have breathed in stale air all day on a unit rife with the dying,” he wrote in a post on Facebook, “and at the end of those twelve hours, I flinch and scour my unprotected neck with a bleach wipe, hoping that the thin, easily torn, permeable yellow gown I wear as ‘protection’ did just enough to stop the virus from seeping into my scrubs and settling under my skin.....”

Today we want to honor the "Old Dolls" at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Here is there story as reported by Nara Schoenberg (CHICAGO TRIBUNE).

Intensive care unit nurse Raquel “Rocky” Collanto is 63 and cares for her 91-year-old mother, so when COVID-19 patients began to arrive at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, her supervisor offered her options. Collanto could transfer to another department or to a different ICU unit where there would be less risk of exposure to the potentially deadly virus.

Collanto thought about it; the virus scares her. But then she thought about the young nurses in her unit, the ones who call her “mom.” They were so full of energy and compassion, and they all wanted to stay and fight. “I will stay with my team,” she said.

The “Old Dolls,” a group of ICU nurses ...

Julie Cummings has been in New York for 25 days now helping to battle COVID-19 coronavirus. Cummings works seven days a week and 12 hours a day, all in an effort to help patients get better.

"We leave our hotel at about 6 in the morning and get home at about 9 at night, and just do it every day. We do everything from passing out food trays, to passing meds, to cleaning out patients... it's intense but it's rewarding!" said Cummings. With lower COVID-19 numbers here in Maine, Cummings packed her bags and flew to New York to help fight the virus in a hot-spot.
