Farewells and Welcomes

Dear Members of the Mount Vernon Virginia Stake,

These indeed are interesting times. We all know well the culture of the church of giving our best wishes to those moving away from us, and of extending a ward welcome to those moving into our area. With continuing restrictions on gatherings and preclusions of using our meetinghouses, it has been difficult these last months to extend our farewell wishes and our warm welcomes.

In the past 90 days, 131 people have moved into our stake, including about 30 that moved from one ward to another. Also, in the past 90 days, 137 people have moved, about 100 of whom moved away from the stake.

We hope you have extended love and best wishes to those that have moved. If you have moved out of the stake, and are receiving this email, please let me know your new address, and we'll transfer your membership to your new ward / stake so that you can be welcomed there!

We hope you are finding ways to welcome those that have moved here recently, whether in a Zoom class or worship service, or dropping off a welcome card or treat. If you have moved here recently, please reach out to members in your ward to start getting the "lay of the land".

Our son's family moved recently from New Jersey to Georgia. Needless to say, the "stay-at-home" conditions and the differences in re-opening between NJ and GA provided many intriguing challenges to them. So, for all that are having relocations during these interesting times, we feel for you, and we hope that everything proceeds smoothly.

We hope that we as members of our stake are building Zion here, loving one another, caring for one another, avoiding contention, and serving together strengthening members and friends in the love of our Savior Jesus Christ.

Again,

FAREWELL and GOD BLESS to those leaving,

and

WELCOME and HOPE YOU FIND JOY here to those arriving.

Sincerely,

President Davey

Dear Members of the Mount Vernon Virginia Stake

The following changes are for your awareness. Formal expressions of appreciation for those released, and sustaining of those newly called will take place in our in-person Sacrament Meetings when we resume. In the meantime, the changes are effective immediately.

Chris Flores of the Mount Vernon Ward has been released as a member of the Stake High Council. We are sad to see the Flores family from the stake, and wish them the best.

Matt Sandgren of the Alexandria 1st Ward has been called as a member of the Stake High Council.

Clint Long of the Kingstowne Ward has been released as Stake Assistant Executive Secretary. We are sad to see the Long family move from our stake, and wish them the best.

Benson Brätt of the Crystal City Ward has been called as Stake Assistant Executive Secretary.

Lori Thompson of the Franconia Ward has been called as Stake Social Media Specialist and member of the Stake Communication Council.

Stan and Tamara Stolpe of the Kingstowne Ward have been call as Stake JustServe Specialists and members of the Stake JustServe Council.

We are deeply appreciative of all that serve, and express our special gratitude to those just released, and our warm welcome to those newly called. In the absence of manifesting by raised hand presently, let's all welcome and give support.

Sincerely,

President Davey

Dear Alexandria 3rd Ward Family,

first of all Happy Mothers' Day to all tomorrow! We are approaching two months in quarantine, and it seems way too long since we were able to meet in person with you all. We sure miss you, and hope and pray that we will be able to unite for sacrament meeting soon. We continually pray for your health and welfare and spiritual comfort. I have to admit I am especially sorry for our beloved women in our ward, who usually, on Mothers' Day get a special treat of strawberry shortcake in the cultural hall from the men with ample time to socialize without distractions 🙂 While lamentably we will have to skip the treat, we will have a brief meeting tomorrow at 10:00 AM at the usual time for a ward meeting over zoom. Following the 10AM meeting, we will have Sunday School at 11:00AM prepared and taught by Alicia Cook, which will be a wonderful treat (better than Abram's strawberry shortcake) 🙂 Hope to see you all tomorrow on the usual coordinates.

Please note that those who have been previously authorized by the Bishop can also bless the sacrament in their homes tomorrow, and hopefully all those who would like to sacrament in their homes can reach out to their ministering brothers or the Elders Quorum regarding help with the same.

I hope that you are reaching out to each other in ministering and invite others, friends, family to our zoom meetings on Sundays. It is great to share or love, community and prayers with others who might feel lonely or just need a pick-up for the week. Please feel free to do the same for this Sunday.

With much love,

Bishop Szamosfalvi and the Bishopric

Alexandria Non-Profit Receives $10K for COVID Relief
As part of its ongoing efforts to provide relief amid the COVID-19
pandemic, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints today contributed $10,000 to
ALIVE!, a local non-profit organization whose mission is to help provide emergency assistance
to those in need in the city of Alexandria.
In a presentation today, ALIVE! Executive Director Jennifer Ayers received the donation,
which will be used to purchase bulk food supplies estimated to result in as many as 25,000
meals to Alexandrians suffering the impact of the global crisis.
“ALIVE! is highly appreciative of the donation from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-
day Saints, one of our long-standing member congregations, to support the growing need for
food in Alexandria during the coronavirus pandemic. The $10,000 donation will be put to
immediate use to purchase food at low cost to provide families in our community with groceries,”
said Ms. Ayers. “We are heartened to see our congregations coming together to work toward
serving all those in need. The donation from your faith community underscores our shared
commitment as people of faith to serve those who are calling for help and we are grateful for
your support in our joint efforts to serve all those who call for assistance.”
“ALIVE! is a great organization and we’re pleased to work together with them in
providing support for those in need in the community,” said President Keith Davey, the leader of
Mt. Vernon Virginia Stake of the Church. “A key tenet of our faith is that of service to our fellow
men is an expression of our love and service to God.”
Comprised of over 45 faith communities, ALIVE! was organized in 1969 and serves
thousands each month by providing food, shelter, emergency help and education. The
Alexandria 3 rd Ward, a local congregation of the Church, has been part of ALIVE! for many
years.
Latter-day Saint Charities has donated 280 COVID relief projects in over 80 countries.
Within the United States, 15 truckloads of commodities from the Church’s storehouses are
being delivered each week to food banks and other charitable organizations across the country.
The $10,000 donation to ALIVE! is part of $5.5 million in cash donations being provided
by the Church to key relief agencies in the U.S. including Convoy of Hope, Feeding America,
Partnership with Native Americans, the Salvation Army and United Way.
In addition to financial assistance, the Church also provides personal assistance through volunteer service in nationwide service opportunities.

Dear Alexandria 3rd Ward Family,

we hope and pray that you are healthy and in good spirits! We miss you and love to see or hear from you digitally even during physical distancing.

We are inviting all of you to attend our Sunday Fast Service tomorrow at 10:00AM. The call in information is the same as last week. This is a fast Sunday, so in addition to our fasting tomorrow, after opening hymn we will have the time for members of the congregation to bear brief testimonies. We will keep our meeting to 30 minutes with my attempt to try to moderate the meeting. At 11:00AM the Zoom Chapel 🙂 will be open for the Elders Quorum meeting until 12:00PM.

We are looking forward to having you all join under the link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/5874186638

For those dialing in please use: Meeting ID: 587 418 6638 Telephone number: 1(312)626-6799,,5874186638#

Since this is a great time to renew temple recommends (both Bishopric and Stake Presidency can do them quickly without travel) please consider renewing those in case they are getting close to expiration, or have already expired. We cannot yet attend temples, but it is a great show of faith to get the recommends ready for the eventual reopening of the Houses of the Lord.

Please let us know how you are doing via email, text or phone calls. We love to hear from you.

With much love,

Bishop Szamosfalvi and the Bishopric

Dear A3 Ward Family and Friends,

we have another week behind us, and we are looking to seeing you all on Zoom again tomorrow! If you are anything like me, the days seem to all flow together these days... and maybe because of that keeping our Sabbath set apart from other days is even more important. As a Bishopric we continue to pray for your health and comfort among trying circumstances and add our hope and encouragement to yours that we shall come out of this having been unified and strengthened in ways we never thought before. This Sunday we are going to start with our ward Sunday meeting at 10:00AM. At 11:00AM there will be a Youth sunday school meeting for Young Men and Young Women and leaders.

Those who have been previously authorized to perform the ordinance of the sacrament may do so tomorrow in their homes, and also may--under judicious hygiene and standing VA regulations--administer the sacrament in the homes where authorized and where requested. Please don't forget to record the ordinances via the link that Will White has and will send out.

Our speakers for our 10:00AM meeting will be Luke Hales, from the Deacons Quroum, as well as brief testimonies by Ivan DuBois, the new second counselor in the bishopric, and Abram Ellis, the former first counselor in the bishopric. It will be my time to unique comments about Abram while introducing him 🙂

We are looking forward to having you all join under the link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/5874186638

We are looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow. In case there is anything we can do for you please don't hesitate to reach out to any member of the Bishopric, or Zack Parks, our Elders Quorum President, or Mary Hales, our Relief Society President.

With much love,

Bishop Szamosfalvi

Dear A3 Ward Family,

We hope you are doing healthy and well.
You already saw a message from the Sunday School Presidency - we are looking forward to having a ward-wide Sunday School tomorrow at 10AM followed at 11AM a brief Relief Society meeting.
The login info for the Sunday meetings has changed to the following. This is our A3 dedicated zoom account:
Jozsef Szamosfalvi is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

https://us02web.zoom.us/j/5874186638
Meeting ID: 587 418 6638

For those who prefer to calling in on the phone please use:
+13126266799,,5874186638#

Please remember to mute your line unless you would like to make a comment, which you should indicate visually so our Sunday School teacher can acknowledge. THis will be our first-time for an interactive setting, so we will try to make the best of it.

We have also been given authorization this Sunday to visit the homes of those who wish to partake the sacrament to administer the ordinance with due precaution (masks and gloves if requested). Please reach out to your ministering contacts to confirm and schedule a time for tomorrow for the sacrament. Everyone that has been previously authorized to bless the sacrament in their home may also proceed to do so prior to, or after the Sunday meetings. Also, please remember to record the ordinances and report back to Will White. We also encourage you to continue home-based scripture study from Come Follow Me.
This email might not reach all - can you please reach out to your friends and ministering assignments to let them know about the details.

Many thanks,
Bishop Szamosfalvi

Dear Ward Members, In light of the news that the novel Coronavirus is spreading and has now affected some parts of the Fort Belvoir military community, we remind members to make smart decisions given their own personal health risks. We encourage you all to make decisions that you feel are best for your family and situation. Some of you may choose not to attend today, or may choose to attend a different sacrament meeting. And that is OK. We will be holding sacrament meeting at the Mt Vernon ward today at the regularly scheduled time. We will be doing our best to ensure that the sacrament is administered with all appropriate care. But, after consultation with the ward council, it has been decided by the Bishop to cancel the second hour of church and the scheduled linger longer. Finally, please remember to follow appropriate and reasonable safe-guards when going out in public and interacting at church. For the time being, we have been asked not to shake hands at church and to take other extra precautions. Please be respectful of these guidelines. All the best, Abram Ellis

Our very own Alexandria 3rd Ward member, Harry Muhelstien, will participate in a multi-faith youth choir! This choir will perform as a part of the Interfaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington (IFCMW) annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Multi-Faith Commemoration in January 2019. The Interfaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington’s 2019 Martin Luther King Multi Faith Commemorative Event will take place on Sunday, January 13, 2019 from 3:00 pm until 4:30 pm. It is being held at the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church (NYAPC), located at 1313 New York Ave. Washington, DC 20005. The Metro Center and McPherson Square metro stations on the red line are only a 5-minute walk from the church. As part of this event, the multi-faith choir directed by Mrs. Hurrunnessa Fariad will be performing two songs – We Are The World by Michael Jackson and Salaam by Mosh Ben Ari. Let us support the David and Megan Muhlestein family, especially their talented son Harry! It would be great to have our Ward members attend! We all very much appreciate Harry’s desire to contribute his talents to this wonderful event, and hope it will be a meaningful experience for all involved.
Take Ft. Hunt Rd to get to church today. Detours on GW Parkway this morning, but you can get to the church. Give yourself a little extra time this morning.
