Veteran Policy Analyst Shows Ways for School System Improvement | LFA: Join The Conversation - Public School Insights

School reform has been both wrongly targeted and oversold, we need to focus on families’ socio-economic status, recruiting teachers, and good social and economic policies to truly achieve change, Jack Jennings, author of Fatigued by School Reform, says in LFA's new podcast: https://learningfirst.org/node/4815.

Fatigued by School Reform, a new book by Jack Jennings, argues that school reform has been both wrongly targeted and oversold. Efforts should be focused on helping lower and middle income students to overcome any disadvantages from their families’ socio-economic status and also on recruiting more ...

When kids go back to school, who’s going to drive the bus?

School support staff like bus drivers are often older and rely on their hourly wages. But they can't work from home and many may not come back to work. Simply getting kids to school may be one of the biggest challenges this fall.

Bus drivers are often older and can’t do their jobs remotely. Administrators are struggling to figure out how to reopen while keeping these staff safe.

NEA Today: Student Trauma Won’t Just Disappear In the Fall, Counselors Warn.
A new study found that school closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic have severed the “link between child maltreatment victims and the number one source of reported maltreatment allegations – school personnel.”

School counselors and school psychologists, as part of their jobs, are mandated reporters of child abuse and neglect, but these incidents may be increasing due to the chronic stress – economic or health-related – some households are experiencing during this crisis. Other students are just having difficulty coping with social isolation and the pressures of online learning. Whatever the challenge, the coronavirus has robbed many students of the valuable face-to-face guidance and support of their school counselors. https://bit.ly/3efuRUp

What Will It Cost to Keep School Buildings Safe in this Pandemic? AASA and the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO), have built this chart that estimates the additional costs associated with reopening school buildings this fall, from cleaning products and PPE to transportation. They estimate the average 3,600-student district incurring additional costs of at least $1.7 million. (photo of Madison High School students' supply pick up courtesy of Fairfax County Public Schools)

When COVID-19 hit the Navajo Nation, it limited students’ educational opportunities after schools closed, eliminated essential school services, exposed ongoing inequities, and made health and economic hardships families face worse. The Arizona Education News Service examines the situation, where some analyses show the Navajo Nation has more people infected with COVID-19 per capita than any state in the United States.

Amid Uprisings, Schools Consider Terminating Their Contracts With Police

Minneapolis' school board has voted unanimously to end its contract with the local police department. Other school districts across the country are reconsidering whether a police presence in schools is the right call as well, as data shows Black students are disproportionately arrested, often for low-level offenses.

The number of cops in schools has exploded in the last two decades. Now, some districts are starting to take a second look.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed and exacerbated the inequities facing our most vulnerable students, according to a new National Education Association survey. More than 80% of NEA members say that “providing the same level of education to all students” is a serious problem. Educators in high-poverty schools report lower class attendance, feel distance learning will be less effective for their students, and believe that closing the digital divide should be a top priority: http://neatoday.org/2020/05/14/nea-president-our-students-must-not-pay-the-price-for-this-crisis/

'We're on the edge of the precipice': How the pandemic could shatter college dreams

Politico has published an important story on the pandemic and college admissions: "The pandemic and the nation's brutal economic collapse are combining to crush the college hopes of low-income and first-generation students. Some high school seniors are dropping their first-choice schools in favor of colleges that are cheaper and closer to home, early surveys have found. Others are thinking about going part-time, or taking a gap year so they can work and bail out families whose breadwinners are suddenly out of work."

Some high school seniors are dropping their first-choice schools in favor of colleges that are cheaper. Others are taking a year off so they can help bail out their families.
