Keep insulting doctors, and good luck finding a physician in 10 years

“Please Do not confuse your google search with my medical degree” - we all have patients who believed the doctors do not know enough or that we worked for big pharma company. What do you think of the”doctor bashing” in this article?

https://www.kevinmd.com/blog/2020/01/keep-insulting-doctors-and-good-luck-finding-a-physician-in-10-years.html

The tragedy that’s happening in medicine today is that the loss of respect and the constant threats to fair payment are making physicians regret that they ever chose medicine. They were fascinated with science and wanted to help people, and their reward is insult.

Young Physicians and the Future of the Medical Profession | Health Affairs

In this 1990 study, it quoted - "Finally, the finding that 40 percent of all young physicians claim that they would not, or are not sure that they would, go to medical school is disconcerting. This suggests that young physicians may become disenchanted with medicine relatively early in their careers." It is now nearly 30 years later, do you think the percentage would be higher or lower than 40% if we polled out young physicians?

Gender Differences and Work–Life Integration among Head and Neck Surgeons - ENTtoday

"As a whole, head and neck surgeons are highly satisfied with their career choice. Fewer women, however, are lacking in senior academic positions, and more remain unmarried with fewer children when compared with their male counterparts. This is the main finding of a study that assessed the association of gender difference with the perceived quality of life among head and neck surgeons (JAMA Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg [published online ahead of print March 21, 2019]. doi: 10.1001/jamaoto.2019.0104)."

Are altruism, empathy, and compassionnstill valued virtues in “modern” medicine, or have patients come to expect something else in the provision of their healthcare by physicians.

Work–Life Imbalance in Physicians - ENTtoday

Have you seen this great article by Dr. Julie Wei in the most recent edition of ENT Today?

"Every decision to do more for the sake of our patients, colleagues, and organization, as a part of our job and career and in service of others, comes at a cost. That cost is typically the time we are not spending on self-care to improve our own well being, or not spending with our loved ones. Some of us do better than others; some may be in denial, and some may realize this but believe that they don’t have a choice. After all, how can anyone expect a physician to give less to her patients, career, work, and service to others, especially when our work has such meaning and we actually love what we do?"

If you are interested in wellbeing, be sure to check out her two seminars on the topic at the annual meeting - and also stop by the YPS General Assembly, where we will have a wellness resource fair. Open to all!
