Argentum

Argentum Argentum is the largest national association exclusively dedicated to professionally managed senior living communities.
Founded in 1990, Argentum serves as the voice for operators of senior living communities and the seniors and families those communities serve.
(17)

Argentum educates federal and state policymakers about the assisted living philosophy and advocates for public policy that advances quality of life for seniors. Senior living best practices are continuously evolving in order to meet the changing needs of consumers, and offer accessibility, choice, dignity and independence. As a result, senior living and assisted living providers and those companies operating senior living communities share best practices through Argentum's senior living programs to raise standards and improve the quality of care and service offered to seniors and their families. Argentum is the shared voice of resident-centered, consumer-driven senior living and the seniors and families served. Through outreach, advocacy and media, Argentum informs the public and policymakers about the critical role senior living communities play to champion quality of life for seniors.

Mission: Members of Argentum exemplify the principles of choice, dignity, and independence for seniors. To support these principles and to enhance quality of life for seniors, Argentum influences public policy, promotes business excellence, and ensures an informed public.

Mother's Day is typically a time for families to gather and celebrate the important women in their lives at senior living communities across the country. Sadly, this year is different and we know it’s difficult to not be able to show appreciation in the ways you normally would.

However, just like the many amazing mothers, aunts, sisters, and daughters who live and work in our communities, we remain steadfast in our commitment to protecting those in our care, despite the many challenges created by this pandemic.

Today, we celebrate all of the mothers across senior living, from the dedicated staff to the wonderful residents, who have become like family! Here's to you...

Today, Argentum and ASHA sent a letter to Congressional leaders seeking COVID-19 relief in the next federal stimulus legislation.

"Sadly, our call for PPE, test kits and financial relief to date have gone unanswered. We are caring for the most vulnerable population, yet we are ignored because we are not hospitals or nursing homes. And now as businesses prepare to reopen, competition for PPE and test kits will only increase..."

On Thursday, April 30, President Trump invited a group of industry executives, including Argentum’s President & CEO James Balda, to the White House for President Trump’s remarks on protecting America’s seniors. Please see a statement below from Mr. Balda on this opportunity:

“We are grateful that the Trump administration is shining a light on the urgent needs of our seniors and the heroic work being done every day to protect and care for them. While the actions announced during the press briefing were focused on nursing homes, we feel there is much more that needs to be done for senior living communities, which include assisted living, independent living, memory care and continuing care communities. Like nursing homes, senior living communities have critical needs right now, including expanded testing, PPE and financial relief so that they can continue safeguarding the nearly 2 million seniors who reside in our communities and the nearly 1 million employees who work in them. We are urging the Administration not to overlook senior living communities, which are a critical part of the health care continuum and are acting right now as a critical backstop to hospitals. We will continue working with the Trump administration, including HHS, and state and local governments, to ensure that senior living communities continue to be prioritized for these vital resources."

Goldfeder and Bedzow: Coronavirus nursing home crisis – 4 things they need right now

“In order to continue protecting the millions of seniors in senior living communities, not to mention the health care infrastructure they are buttressing, these communities need to have their funding explicitly included in federal relief packages…The senior living industry is serving as a backstop against the surge of people coming to America’s hospitals. So, in a very real sense, our entire health care system is depending on this industry’s continued success in disease mitigation and infection control.”

"Options for unemployed hospitality workers during the coronavirus crisis" via The Baltimore Sun:

“Hospitality, restaurant and retail workers are particularly impacted by the current crisis, and Argentum has been working with the American Hotel & Lodging Association to help connect these workers with senior living,” Balda explains. “They bring skills and experience that are a strong fit for many senior living positions, such as concierges, dining professionals and housekeepers.”

SENIOR LIVING INDUSTRY LOBBIES FOR AID: In an interview, James Balda, the president and chief executive of Argentum, said his group was trying to convince the administration to give the industry up to $20 billion to help pay for additional staff, personal protective equipment and coronavirus testing, among other needs. “We’re continuing to work to try to make sure we’re in the next round of funding,” he said. The trade group is also pressing the administration to send protective equipment directly to assisted living facilities in the same way it’s doing for nursing homes.

About Argentum

Argentum is the leading national association exclusively dedicated to supporting companies operating professionally managed, resident-centered senior living communities and the older adults and families they serve. Since 1990, Argentum has advocated for choice, independence, dignity, and quality of life for all older adults. Argentum member companies operate senior living communities offering assisted living, independent living, continuing care, and memory care services. Along with its state partners, Argentum’s membership represents approximately 75 percent of the professionally managed communities in the senior living industry—an industry with a national economic impact of nearly a quarter of a trillion dollars and responsible for providing over 1.6 million jobs. These numbers will continue to grow as the U.S. population ages.

A Mission to Promote Senior Living Argentum’s mission is to promote choice, dignity, independence, and quality of life for seniors. To support this mission, Argentum influences public policy, promotes business excellence, and ensures an informed public.

A Vision for the Future of Senior Living Americans are living longer. About 70% of Americans will need some kind of long-term care after they turn 65. When the last of the baby boomers reach age 65 in 2029, they will represent more than 20% of the total U.S. population. Senior living services and products will see unprecedented demand in the coming decades.

My book, “Choosing to Die” is a guidebook and memoir that courageously shares the first personal story ever written about VSED (Voluntarily Stopping Eating and Drinking) as an end of life choice and is available now at goo.gl/l1T9GQ . This book has resided in my heart for the past four years, since the last months of my husband’s life, when I his advocate so he could consciously and peacefully VSED, voluntarily stop eating and drinking. He did this so he did not have to live into the late stages of Alzheimer’s Disease. There is more information on end of life choices and my story at www.phyllisshacter.com.
