Waynewood was once part of Mount Vernon Plantation, and is situated on what was River Farm, one of the five farms that made up the plantation. In 1754, when George Washington became the sole owner of Mount Vernon, he began acquiring additional tracts until the plantation grew in size from the original 2,126 acres to more than 8,000 acres. All five farms were highly developed and well cultivated. One of them was River Farm – consisting of 1,806 acres and purchased in 1769. Using present landmarks, the original farm was roughly bounded on the north by what is now “Wellington,” to the east by the Potomac river, and running diagonally south and west, Little Hunting Creek. An electric car line, established in 1892, ran from Washington, DC, to Mount Vernon until the George Washington Memorial Parkway opened in 1932. Waynewood was developed by Clarence W. Gosnell, Inc. and consists of approximately 301 acres. The community was formally opened in 1957. The history of the neighborhood plays a vital part in the identity of its residents. If you have lived in the neighborhood for many years, the neighborhood history is a heartfelt reminder of days gone by. If you have just come to call the neighborhood home, it is a way to learn more about the new community you have joined. This page is produced by the Waynewood Citizens Association (WCA). Postings are restricted to individuals from the neighbhorhood, surrounding areas and corporate supporters of the WCA. All other corporate solicitations and inappropriate comments will be removed by the Administrator. For more information about WCA, please visit your neighborhood directory.

DC Slices in the pool parking lot tonight (Friday, 4/24). See note from DC Slices here:

We will, of course, be at the Waynewood Rec tonight. Good news... Due to such great Waynewood-support we're bringing our BIG festival truck and we're bringing on a third crew member as well as lots of supplies!

Here's our new pre-order system:

Using our pre-ordering site reduces our amount of interaction although if you use card or cash we have measures to keep it extra sanitary.

Your support during this time has been SO appreciated. For the past five weeks, you've provided some of our crew their only hours and source of income... a small light in the dark. We sincerely thank you all!!🍕

Waynewood members of the Friends of United Community are hosting a contactless food drive for United Community (formerly UCM or United Community Ministries) on Saturday, April 18 from 10a-1p. The Waynewood community is well known for its generosity and longstanding support of UC and we hope it will help again as UC is providing food to unprecedented numbers of families and individuals during this pandemic crisis. It has become the Route One Food Hub for families affected by Covid-19.

Donations of cereal (particularly lower sugar ones), pasta and rice are especially needed. Checks made payable to United Community also would be greatly appreciated or donations can be made online for the Covid-19 Emergency Response Fund by going to www.unitedcommunity.org.

Food can be dropped off at 920 Emerald Drive, directly into the back of the open car that will be there. WW members of Friends of United Community will be there to greet and thank you, from an appropriate social distance.

Thank you in advance. Your neighbors, Elin Bohn, Sandy Doyle, Elaine Kolish, Aloyse Murphy, Lyssa Seward and Dottie Wolff

03/30/2020

Governor of Virginia announcement from March 30, 2020:

Fairfax County Asks Residents to Follow State’s Stay at Home Order
-------------------------------
Fairfax County strongly urges residents to follow the stay-at-home order issued by Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam today.

This order is critical to help slow the spread of the coronavirus as cases continue to climb across the state with 225 confirmed cases in the Fairfax County Health District. Social distancing is the most effective method to limit the disease’s transmission.

The governor’s action, which currently remains in effect until June 10, means that residents should stay in homes with only a few exceptions for essential activities, including:

✅ Getting groceries or medicines.
✅ Caring for a sick family member or friend.
✅ Getting medical care for yourself.
✅ Going outside for exercise for yourself or pets (although not in groups larger than 10 people).
✅ Getting necessary social or government services.
✅ Traveling to and from work or place of worship.

Do not go out unless you need to go out.
