And here's a fun way to support our small businesses.

We are so thrilled to launch DEL RAY BINGO! Every two weeks, the Del Ray Business Association will release a new bingo card featuring ways to support our restaurants, retailers, and wellness providers; plus challenges to build community and give back to our nonprofits -- all while socially distancing. The DRCA helps make Del Ray a better place to live. In the 2019-2020 membership year, the DRCA has:
--Held its annual chili cook-off and gave the $2000 in proceeds to Friends of Guest House;
--Funded boulders for Kettle Park;
--Provided a forum for the community to hear from people and organizations of interest and importance, like Mayor Justin Wilson, State Senator Adam Ebbin, emergency management staff of the Alexandria Public Health Department, and the Equal Justice Initiative's Community Remembrance Project;
--Surveyed our community to gauge what we value in our neighborhood and transmitted the results to the city to inform the updates to the Del Ray and Arlandria plans;
--Regularly cleaned our neighborhood parks;
--Contributed $2500 each to ALIVE! and Casa Chirilagua for COVID-19 relief and challenged other Alexandria civic associations to do the same with funds available to them.

For many of us, our “spring cleaning” instinct is in overdrive as we spend so much time in our homes and gardens, but *please* remember that the City’s Transportation and Environmental Services Department has suspended yard waste and bulk trash collection.
For the safety of their workers, collection procedures have been modified and your trash and recycling *must fit inside* of your City trash and recycling containers. Break down cardboard boxes to fit more.

To help encourage physical distancing and discourage crowds, City playgrounds, fenced dog parks, recreation centers, and more are closed until further notice.
Stay safe and stay well, Del Ray!

COVID-19 :: To encourage social distancing and slow the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus, the City of Alexandria and the Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) have closed the following public play spaces until further notice:

- Recreation, nature and art centers
- Playgrounds
- Fenced fields
- Fenced basketball and tennis courts
- Fenced dog parks
- Park amenities, including restrooms and parking lots

The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) has recommended these changes because public play areas have continued to attract groups of more than 10 people despite earlier warnings against this practice. Social distancing -- including avoiding gatherings and maintaining at least six feet of personal space whenever possible -- is one of the most effective ways to slow the spread of the virus. It is also not feasible for City and ACPS staff to clean and disinfect outdoor play surfaces on a constant basis.

AHD strongly urges all community members to change their daily behavior to reduce risk from COVID-19, particularly to protect our most vulnerable populations. Public health officials have noted evidence of community transmission of the COVID-19 coronavirus in Northern Virginia, and each individual is a critical part of slowing the spread of the virus.

All unfenced parks, trails and fields remain open to the public. The City, ACPS and AHD believe that safe, socially distant opportunities for exercise are crucial for our community, to maintain both physical and mental health. Patrons are urged to practice social distancing and wash their hands or use a hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol, to protect themselves and others. Signage with these guidelines is being posted at play areas.

Visit alexandriava.gov/Recreation for a complete list of City recreation facility and service adjustments, and acps.k12.va.us/coronavirus for details about ACPS facilities and services.

Neighbors,
We have little to add to the information overload that we've all been experiencing from our favorite national and local news sources, but here's news about the decision to close this weekend's Del Ray Farmer's market that you won't find on CNN.
Stay safe and be well!

In light of the evolving situation in Alexandria and new guidance from local health officials, we must cancel the market tomorrow. There will be NO #delrayfarmersmarket on Saturday, March 21. However, you can still get delivery from many of our vendors and we encourage you to support their businesses. Check out our Facebook post about preorders and delivery for more information.

Guest House Helps Women Transition From Jail to Society

Proceeds from this year's DRCA chili cook-off will benefit Friends of Guest House.
If you're not familiar with Friends of Guest House, it's a local non-profit that has helped women re-enter the community after incarceration since 1974 and it's been featured in a new documentary, "Guest House", that follows the lives of three women during their stay. You can learn more in this clip from NBC4.

In the heart of Alexandria’s Del Ray neighborhood, there is a place that’s been quietly offering hope and rebuilding lives for 45 years. News4’s Julie Carey reports.

Survey Participation

The City of Alexandria's Department of Planning and Zoning is in the midst of a planning process for Del Ray and our neighbors to the north, Arlandria and the Del Ray Citizens Association wants to know what issues matter to you most with this short survey.

The current plans, devised in 2005 (for Del Ray) and 2003 (for Arlandria) have provided a clear vision for neighborhood development "where Main Street still exists". However, these plans are in need of review and revision. Amazon's decision to plant HQ2 in nearby Crystal City, Virginia Tech's new campus in North Potomac Yard and the construction of the new Potomac Yard Metrorail station are all expected to have major impacts on the surrounding neighborhoods.

Course – Alexandria Turkey Trot

Happy Thanksgiving Week, Del Ray!
Thursday is the day of the 44th annual Alexandria Turkey Trot. It's a fun race to run (or trot or walk) or to support from the sidelines, but if instead it's to grandmother's house you go, be aware of some *street closings* on Thursday morning.
Please review the race route so you won't be caught by surprise. Streets close before the race begins at 9am and should be reopened by 10:30am. Plan accordingly and allow a little extra time to get to your Gobblefest.
