OFWs should ensure Docs amidst Malaysia's crackdown

Filipinos in Malaysia are advised by the Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur to make sure that they have proper immigrant and working documents as Malaysia ordered a crackdown on undocumented foreigners.

Undocumented Filipinos or those with incomplete papers are advised to take needed steps to correct their status. Meanwhile, those with legal status should always carry their identification papers. Likewise, Filipinos who wish to work in Malaysia should secure proper working permits before entry in the Asian country.

Ambassador, J. Eduardo Malaya said, “We wish to remind our Filipino nationals to have proper documents, notably work permit or passport with valid visa, and carry it with them in case of immigration checks, in order to avoid inconvenience. Also, Filipinos who wish to enter Malaysia for work should have approved work permits or similar papers as they start their jobs here.”

To extend assistance to affected Filipinos, Malaya also informed that the PH Embassy in Malaysia continue to conduct mobile consular missions. Some of the areas they have visited are Kota Kinabalu, Lahad Datu, Semporna, Tawau, Kudat, Keningau, Kota Marudu and Sandakan.

He said, “To ensure that our nationals have the proper documents, the Embassy continuously undertakes mobile consular missions particularly in Sabah, where we provide not just passports but also birth documentations for our nationals there. We deploy twice a month a consular mobile team of six to seven personnel for two-week stay in Sabah.”

Vice President Jejomar Binay informed that Rogelio “Dondon” Lanuza, the overseas Filipino (OFW) who was imprisoned in Saudi for allegedly killing a Saudi National is set to come home to the Philippines today (September 19, 2013) after he received pardon from the Saudi government and upon payment of blood money worth SAR3 million.
Lanuza was imprisoned in 2001 and was initially sentenced to death via beheading. The pardon was granted to Lanuza after the family of the victim received the blood money and signed the letter of forgiveness.
An interview during the Regional Scouts Summit in Leyte, Binay said, ”Gusto ko lamang ibalita sa inyo na bukas ng hapon, ‘yung (kababayan natin na) matagal na nakakulong, who was sentenced to death in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is arriving. Siya si Dondon Lanuza.”
Upon his arrival, Binay was told by Ambassador Ezzeding Tago that Lanuza will go straight to his home in Sampaloc, Manila.
The Vice President also expressed his appreciation to the Saudi government especially to King Abdullah, for providing SAR 2.3 million of Lanuza’s blood money. Supporters of Lanuza and the Philippine government were only able to raise SAR700,000.
He said, “This is a rare instance where the king of Saudi Arabia contributed millions of pesos to save someone’s life. We would like to again extend our thanks to the king of Saudi Arabia, to private groups, and to our Embassy for their effort.”

20,000 Pinoys corrected residency status in Saudi– report
September 17, 2013 2:28pm

At least 20,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) have managed to correct their residency status in Saudi Arabia during the ongoing grace period for illegal workers to legalize their stay in the Kingdom.

Philippine Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Ezzedin Tago disclosed this on Monday as he reiterated his appeal to the other Filipinos in the Kingdom to follow suit.

“The embassy has completed the procedures of 3,000 nationals who were unable to correct their status. They were sent home at the expense of the government,” he said, according to a report on Arab News.

He said another 2,000 are waiting for the correction process due to delays related to passports and photos, the Arab News report added.

In the meantime, Tago urged other Filipinos who have yet to correct their status to do so before November 3, the end of the grace period.

While the Saudi government initially gave illegal foreign workers until early July to correct their status, a clamor from employers and embassies prompted it to extend the grace period to November 3.

On March 28, Saudi authorities started to implement the “Saudization” labor policy, which aimed to prioritize locals over foreign workers.

The “Saudization" program became more urgent in the eyes of the Saudi government in light of the sharp rise in the incidence of joblessness among the youth. Records showed that in 2009, 27 percent of Saudis under 30 were without work.

Philippine officials said 6,000 OFWs in Saudi are expected to return to the Philippines as a result of the new policy.

Saudi is host to the biggest population of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) —about 1.5 million—many of whom are nurses, engineers, architects, and domestic workers.

At least 20,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) have managed to correct their residency status in Saudi Arabia during the ongoing grace period for illegal workers to legalize their stay in the Kingdom.

~Prayer of an Overseas Worker~

Father God, it’s so lonely out here. Many times I’ve asked myself why I had to go here in the first place, and why I can’t go back yet to where my heart truly is, where my true happiness resides. Why must I walk these streets alone? Why must I eat this bread without my family?

Many sights have so amazed me since I got here and yet no beauty has ever succeeded in wiping away the tears from my eyes. For without my loved ones, what can all these things mean to me? I’d rather be blind, I’d rather tire myself to sleep so I won’t have time to remember, to cry, to long so painfully for the people I love so much.

Help me O God. Give me strength to bear such a terrible longing. Give me hope so that the vision of your blessings for my loved ones always be before me. Give me faith so I can cling on that hope on my darkest and loneliest days. Let me never forget the reason why I came here for. Let me never forget who I am and to whom I really belong. Save me from my weaknesses and snatch me away from the many temptations that lurk along the way.

I have not come here for my own sake. I have not come here for defeat. I came here for my beloved ones. I came here to make a sacrifice. And I came here to be victorious though you Most Holy Name! Guide me O Lord each step of the way, protect me from all dangers that I may come home safely, full of your wonderful blessings and overflowing with gratitude for all that you have done for me and my family. Amen!
